Girl-boy name help!

Following on from a 2 for 1 name blog post i’ve just read…I’ve recently come across some very feminine names with spunky male nicknames that would be surprising and fresh on a little girl… I know this trend is nothing new [name]Alexandra[/name]: [name]Alex[/name], [name]Antonia[/name]: [name]Toni[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name]: [name]Jo[/name] have been around for ages but I guess I’m looking for suggetions of unusual or suprising combos though that you don’t often hear!
Here are some that have struck me as unusal combos recently … can you think of any others?

[name]Evangeline[/name]: [name]Van[/name]
[name]Persephone[/name]: Perci
[name]Valentina[/name]: [name]Leni[/name]
[name]Christobel[/name]: [name]Toby[/name]

What are your thoughts on masculine names as female nicknames? I know not everyones a fan!

I much prefer masculine nicknames than actually using a boy’s name. Like I love the nickname [name]Frankie[/name] but would only ever use it as a nickname for [name]Francesca[/name] but I would use it stand alone for a boy. I think this is a much better way to do things than saddle a daughter with a boy’s name, at least she can then choose what she wants to be known as without having just ‘[name]Frankie[/name]’ or ‘[name]Charlie[/name]’ on her birth certificate.

I like [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Mattea[/name] with the nickname [name]Mattie[/name].

This is a neat post! I like [name]October[/name] nn [name]Toby[/name].

Nn [name]Van[/name] just made me finally like [name]Evangeline[/name]! It’s always seemed way too girly/over-the-top/images of the heavens…now it’s kinda spunky!

I love that!

Maybe [name]Claudine[/name] or [name]Adeline[/name] nn [name]Dean[/name]? Or [name]Irena[/name] nn [name]Ira[/name]? [name]Delphine[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]?

Ditto. I think a girl has more options in life being named [name]Samantha[/name] and going by [name]Sam[/name] than if she’s just called [name]Sam[/name] to begin with. It’s a lot easier to say “i go by X” than “yeah, my parents thought naming me [name]Geoffrey[/name] was cool and unique.”

[name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Frankie[/name] is one that I’ve always liked, too, sheflieswithherownwings. [name]Van[/name] for [name]Evangeline[/name] is really cool. And [name]October[/name] nn [name]Toby[/name] is adorable! I’ve always stuck to girly fully names, but I am on board with masculine nn’s.

I, too, much prefer girly full names, but I love the thought of masculine nns. Some of my favourites are [name]Persephone[/name] nn Persy, [name]Aurora[/name] nn [name]Rory[/name], [name]Aisling[/name] nn [name]Ash[/name], [name]Finola[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name], [name]Juliet[/name] nn [name]Jet[/name] and [name]Johanna[/name] nn [name]Johnnie[/name].

I vote [name]Evangeline[/name] and [name]Valentina[/name] because I like the exotic factor of both plus they have my favorite nicknames from your choices! [name]Van[/name] is cute (reminds me of the show [name]Reba[/name]- even though [name]Van[/name] is a boy he is so loveable. But dont worry it can be girly, my brother’s first girlfriend was named [name]Van[/name]) And I [name]LOVE[/name] then nn [name]Leni[/name] on a girl!

I agree with the others that I’m much more accepting of a feminine name with a more masculine nickname. My favorite would be [name]Eleni[/name]/[name]Eleanor[/name] nn [name]Leni[/name], but I also love [name]Teddy[/name] as a nn for a girl ([name]Theodora[/name], [name]Theodosia[/name]?), and much as I prefer [name]Lola[/name], and then [name]Lottie[/name], I still think [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] is pretty cute.

Some great suggestions guys!! I particularly love [name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Frankie[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] nn [name]Leni[/name] both of which I haven’t heard before…[name]Juliet[/name] nn [name]Jet[/name] is also really cute  Any others?!

[name]Thomasin[/name] - [name]Tommy[/name]. Not particularly “how did you get that from that?!” but it’s a little-used name and I happen to really like it.

[name]Raphaela[/name] - [name]Rafe[/name]. My sister has dibsed [name]Raphaela[/name] or it would be on my own list. I do still like [name]Ray[/name]/[name]Rae[/name] but haven’t figured out what to make it short for, besides [name]Rachel[/name].

[name]Martha[/name] - [name]Matt[/name], [name]Mattie[/name], [name]Matty[/name]. I love [name]Martha[/name], I know its old but I like its 1880s feel.

Zakiya / [name]Zakia[/name] - [name]Zak[/name]. Zakiya is an Arabic/Hebrew name meaning “pure,” like [name]Katherine[/name] does, but [name]Zak[/name] makes it clean-edged and simple, a bit like [name]Kat[/name], but more androgynously so.

[name]Thomasina[/name] NN [name]Tommy[/name]
[name]Wilhelmina[/name] NN [name]Billie[/name]

Thanks, this reminded me of one I was trying to think of, [name]Sybilla[/name] NN [name]Billie[/name].
