Girl name ideas

I am looking for unique girl names. My husband really likes using a common boy name and using that for a girl. Any ideas?

[name]Elliott[/name]
[name]Flynn[/name]
[name]Aidan[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Porter[/name]
[name]Archer[/name]
[name]Asher[/name]

[name]Spencer[/name]! There’s a girl in Pretty [name]Little[/name] Liars named [name]Spencer[/name]; she’s the smart, studious type with lots of extra-curriculars. Also very cluey.

[name]Kesey[/name] ([name]Ken[/name] [name]Kesey[/name] was the author of [name]One[/name] Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest)

[name]James[/name] (for a little while, model [name]Jamie[/name] [name]King[/name] went by [name]James[/name] [name]King[/name], and it was cute)

…that’s all I’ve got for now.

Honestly? You’re going to run into a LOT of opposition on these boards for using great, solid masculine names on a girl – and rightly so (IMHO). So many fabulous boys’ names have gone to the girls! [name]Even[/name] aside from that, boys names on girls are (to my mind) trendy and a bit tasteless. There are many gorgeous, strong, not-frilly names in the girls’ category. Why does your husband want to poach from the boys?

If you are hellbent on using a boys’ name for your daughter, perhaps you should consider using a feminization such as [name]Josephine[/name], or a name like [name]Winifred[/name] that can be shortened to [name]Freddie[/name]? Some other suggestions in this category:

[name]Wilhelmina[/name] nn [name]Will[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name] nn [name]Alex[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name] nn [name]Gus[/name]
[name]Thomasina[/name] nn [name]Tommy[/name]
[name]Theodora[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name] nn [name]Bobbie[/name]
[name]Edwina[/name] nn [name]Eddie[/name]
[name]Maxine[/name] nn [name]Max[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Antonia[/name] nn [name]Tony[/name]

[name]Austin[/name]
[name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Spencer[/name]
[name]Taylor[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]

@ augusta lee I don’t think she asked if YOU like masculine names for girls. I believe the question was what are some suggestions for masculine girls names because her husband (and her it sounds like) already know that those are the names they like. If you have different taste then maybe try another thread for frilly girl names. It sounds like thAt is more your thing.

I love masculine girl names here are some suggestions:
[name]Maxine[/name] nn [name]Max[/name]
[name]Andi[/name] - I know a little girl [name]Andi[/name] adorable
[name]Kenny[/name] - I know a little girl named Kenessey (belch) but they call her [name]Kenny[/name] which I love you could do a lot of different names to get to [name]Kenny[/name]/kenni/kennie ex. [name]Kennedy[/name], [name]McKenna[/name] [name]Kenley[/name]
[name]Cam[/name] / [name]Cameron[/name] - my daughters name is Kameryn nn [name]Kam[/name]
[name]Charlee[/name] - I know a baby names [name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlee[/name]
[name]Spencer[/name] - love this I see some one else suggested also
[name]Carter[/name]- just went to a preschool grad and there was the cutest little blonde girl named [name]Carter[/name]
Mikke- [name]Mike[/name]-ah had a girl friend named Mikke

Also I love [name]James[/name] !!

Actually, I love no-frills girl names with unisex nicknames – just like the ones I suggested for the OP. I think there’s a fallacy that strong, streamlined girls’ names don’t exist, which is why so many great names get poached from the boys. See [name]Aubrey[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name], two historical victims of name-poaching; I fear [name]Elliot[/name], a perennial favorite, is going the same way. Honestly, I find that rather a shame. Whatever we may feel about gender, the fact of the matter is that once a boy’s name comes into use by girls, it quickly falls out of favor with boys. A reverse trend does not exist. Additionally, as I touched upon in my post, boys’ names on girls do have a very trendy and rather tacky sound to my ears. If the OP had posted looking for names in the category of [name]Brooklyn[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name], I would have done exactly what I tried to do here: lead her gently in a different direction. This is a board for people who love names – and we tend to have pretty strong opinions about them. Which we share.

That’s exactly how I feel about boys’ names being used on girls.

However, with that being said, there a few traditionally male names that I like (more) on females, like:
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Jordan[/name]
[name]Delaney[/name]
[name]Reese[/name] (I think this is a unisex name, but it’s always leaned more female for me)
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Casey[/name]
[name]Addison[/name]

It’s not my thing, but here are some YOU might like:
Jensyn/[name]Jensen[/name] (I know someone with teenage daughters named [name]Spenser[/name] and Jensyn)
[name]Avery[/name] seems to be popular for girls
[name]Luca[/name] sounds better for a girl, I think…
[name]Devon[/name]/[name]Devyn[/name] and [name]Evan[/name]/[name]Evyn[/name] are cute for a girl… [name]Tristan[/name]/[name]Tristyn[/name] too
[name]Gage[/name] (there is an actress with this name)
[name]Jet[/name] - popular Dutch name for girls
[name]Quincy[/name] instead of [name]Quinn[/name]?
[name]Tyler[/name] instead of [name]Taylor[/name]?
I do really like [name]Leighton[/name] for a girl and not a boy and [name]Rooney[/name], as in [name]Rooney[/name] [name]Mara[/name] (actress) - super cute for a girl!

Ok, sorry for any repeats:

[name]Anniston[/name]
[name]Leigh[/name]
[name]Dante[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Flynn[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Indianna[/name]

  • [name]Jasmine[/name]

[name]Avery[/name] is my favorite.
[name]Quinn[/name] is also a nice option.

I’m not generally fond of boys names on girls.
Nameberry has a pretty good list though

[name]Logan[/name], [name]Alex[/name], [name]Evan[/name].

What about [name]Francesca[/name], nn [name]Frankie[/name]?

I’m one who doesn’t agree with boys names on girls, but these are the ones I actually don’t think are too bad:

[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Rory[/name] ([name]Aurora[/name] nn [name]Rory[/name] would be adorable)
[name]Willow[/name] (the first [name]Willow[/name] I heard of was a boy so I’m counting it)
Aven
[name]Addison[/name]
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Aubrey[/name]
[name]Emerson[/name]
[name]Billie[/name] (cute nn for [name]Willow[/name])
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Harper[/name]
[name]Blair[/name]
[name]Reagan[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]/[name]Francis[/name]
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Noa/name
[name]Sydney[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]

My favourites are [name]Noa[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Sydney[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] “[name]Billie[/name]”

I’m with ‘sugarfoot’ on this one.

[name]How[/name] is it up to us to steer a person in a certain direction unless someone is asking to be steered? The OP asked for boys names that go well on girls. Many people have said “It’s not my thing, but here’s some exceptions to my rule” or similar. And that’s the case for the majority of people. We have a particular thing but there are always exceptions to the rule (well, most of the time). If you have only a negative opinion of something, then don’t contribute. [name]How[/name] can you be helpful if you can’t offer the kind of advice the OP is actually asking for?
We’re trying to help them come to a decision, not undermine their taste.

That’s the beauty of the world of naming humans - the people responsible for this are so different and varied and communities like nameberry have been set up to encourage people to think outside the box to find a name they love. It still applies that not everyone is going to like every name that comes up. But - I know for me and surely most other berries - it’s just exciting to hear something different for once.

I know I would rather meet a girl called [name]Spencer[/name] or [name]Micah[/name] than one called [name]Taylor[/name] or [name]Madison[/name].

Also, on the topic of good boys names becoming girls names - I don’t think that’s a reaction to a feeling that there aren’t enough strong female names. That’s just language evolving over time, just as words change and shift in their meaning and usage. Once upon a time, pink was traditional for boys and blue was for girls. Things change over time. It’s just something we have to take in our stride.

ANd hey, if you want to call your boy [name]Vivian[/name], do it. They did it in the [name]Young[/name] Ones, and he was a crazy punk.

I think [name]Adrian[/name] is cute for a girl.

If this baby were a boy, would your husband be looking at names such as [name]Ruth[/name] or [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Beth[/name]? It is worth considering. [name]Just[/name] because something’s cool doesn’t mean it’s healthy to be thoughtless about it. There’s another thread over in boy names about this emerging naming practice, and we are looking for male perspectives…

I’m confused. [name]Do[/name] you want common or unique? A common name is still common even if used on the opposite gender.
Common is [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Mason[/name]
[name]Unique[/name] is [name]Arlo[/name], Everton, [name]Memphis[/name]

My suggestion would be [name]Parker[/name]. I always think of it as a boys name, but I know a couple of little girls with the name (one of whom lives in the USA, the other in Australia- so I wouldn’t stress about popularity too much) and I love it on a girl as well.

I believe that it is a more common name for girls in the US than it is in Australia though.

I also like
[name]Leigh[/name]
[name]Jordan[/name]
[name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Arlo[/name]
[name]Jamie[/name]
[name]Rory[/name] (always suited [name]Rory[/name] [name]Gilmore[/name] from [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls)
[name]Laurence[/name]
