[name]Asa[/name] [name]Guillaume[/name] is my #1 choice for a boy name. We’re just ttc, and I haven’t run it by my SO for fear he’ll shut it down. I love the paired down, straightforward, cool feel of [name]Asa[/name]. I can see him as a little boy and as a teenager, a dad and a grandpa. His last name would sound like Stack. [name]Guillaume[/name] (g-ee-y-oh-m) is my SO’s favorite boy name and I kind of like having a fancy French name tucked in between two stark names.
Anyway, I’m looking for something in a girl’s name with a similar feel as [name]Asa[/name]. I’m thinking [name]Clothilde[/name] (kl-oh-[name]TEEL[/name]) in the middle (another SO favorite- but admittedly, it’s growing on me).
Here’s what I have so far:
[name]Zelia[/name] (pronounced like [name]Celia[/name], with a z)
[name]Zosia[/name] (zo-sha)
[name]Zelda[/name] (too video game?)
[name]Zoe[/name] (popular)
[name]Lois[/name] (old-lady)
[name]Leonie[/name]
[name]Mae[/name] ([name]Mae[/name] Stack sounds like a warning of some kind)
[name]Juno[/name] (This is my favorite, but I have two concerns: 1. will people ALWAYs assume she was named for the movie? 2. [name]Juno[/name] is a goddess and [name]Asa[/name] is a biblical king/Hebrew name)
[name]Malou[/name] (I would like some opinions on this one)
Longer names that have great nn possibilities, but I’m not sure they match, style-wise.
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name] (see [name]Juno[/name])
[name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
And here’s a little something to make you love [name]Asa[/name] as much as I do!
Oh my, I have heard they once even had a sleepover (without telling their moms)! Gorgeous video! I love children, they’re absolutely insane. The scared is scared of things you like, so uhm I was scared of a monster so I thought of pizza, and juice, and some ma, and a cookie… wow!
Ok, let’s go back to the names. [name]Asa[/name] [name]Guillaume[/name] is perfection, I hope your SO agrees.
I think [name]Juno[/name], [name]Lois[/name] and [name]Malou[/name] would be perfect with [name]Asa[/name]. My thoughts on [name]Malou[/name]: [name]Love[/name]! It’s so cute and one of those names I need to say out loud when I read it. My boyfriend thinks I’m crazy (seriously, we’re just lying very lazily in bed and I keep saying [name]Malou[/name] over and over again). [name]Juno[/name], I don’t think people will associate it with the movie forever, but it has made the name more known. The movie is cool though, not a bad association!
I also think you might like…
[name]Avis[/name]
[name]Clio[/name]
[name]Iben[/name]
[name]Ima[/name]
Ino
[name]Isis[/name]
[name]Lilou[/name]
[name]Lison[/name]
Milou
[name]Mio[/name]
Thanks [name]Ottilie[/name]! I love Milou. [name]How[/name] do you pronounce it? Mee-loo? Mih-loo? Mee-loh ? It seems like the perfect combination of [name]Lilou[/name]- which I love but seems to be reviled in certain quarters- and [name]Malou[/name].
Isn’t that video the best? I wish we could all retain that kind of imagination as we grow up!
I really like [name]Yael[/name], that is a good name. I’m coming around on [name]Opal[/name] as well. [name]Opal[/name] [name]Clothilde[/name] actually works!
I like Milou but its a masculine name not a feminine one*, according to sites I’ve read it comes from the Latin word aemulus meaning rival. It is sometimes used as a nn for Émile and in the adventures on Tintin he has a dog named Milou
Yaël is masculine as well but you could use the feminine version Yaëlle! You might also like the French name Zélie.
*After a discussion with Ottilie I agree Milou is obviously used as a nn for girls as she knows some but personally I’m not aware of it being used as a formal given name on anyone but boys. Either way it is very sweet sounding
As far as I know [name]Malou[/name] is a mixte name for both boys and girls, it is a diminutive for [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Louise[/name] but I only know Milou to be masculine.
[name]Juno[/name]! This name has recently grown on me a lot, and together with [name]Asa[/name] it’s so beautiful.
Yaël sounds too masculine to me, I personally prefer Gaëlle (which works really well as a middle name by the way) even though the pronunciation of the first letter is a bit different.
Milou is an adorable nickname, I know a lot of different Milous and Malous (most of the Milous being French, and most of the Malous being Danish). I think Milou is best as a nickname, I think it’s a bit too precious to stand on its own. Speaking of diminutives for [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Louise[/name], I also know a Mailou which I think is adorable too. I’ve never heard Milou on a boy, I know a lot of boys (nick)named [name]Milo[/name] and Milu though.
Well, that’s your opinion. I have a lot of French friends and acquaintances, I spend a lot of time in [name]France[/name], and the Milous I’ve met are daughters of Parisians. I’d say, in Europe anyway, Milou is a girl name.
I respect your opinion and I’m not trying to start an ugly argument. I spend plenty of time over there as well and have never come across a female Milou but I don’t know everyone in [name]France[/name] so I can’t rule it out. I only added the links because they are sources saying which given names are masculine and feminine. Obviously that does not take into account nicknames and I wouldn’t be surprised to run across a girl with the nn Milou. I apologize if it came off rude.
I’m just going to agree that it can be a mixte nn and won’t argue you on that.
It’s fine I felt bad because sometimes I come off harsh when I don’t mean to. It’s a little embarrassing to admit but I take some medications that seem to affect my cognitive functioning and quite frankly I think they make me come off as stupid. I have a hard time getting my thoughts together and conveying them intelligently so I’ve really cut down on posting. I always enjoy your comments and we share a very similar name taste
We’re all on medication, sweetie! I can’t filter things, I just say whatever pops into my head. I enjoy your posts too (and I adore your names! Athénaïs is one of the most stunning names I’ve ever seen!).
Milou is sweet, but I agree it’s probably a little too insubstantial. I’ll have to look into [name]Yael[/name] some more, I guess. I’ve only ever know one [name]Yael[/name] and she was an older woman.
Does anyone have an opinion on [name]Zosia[/name]? According to NB it’s a variation of [name]Sophia[/name]. I think the nickname [name]Zo[/name] would be so pretty.
Oh, and I love the suggestion of [name]Zelie[/name].
It’s a Polish diminutive of [name]Sophia[/name]. Probably not pronounced the way you’d like though… ZAWSH-uh.
Maybe these (all have long, round o-sounds)
Zosima
Zohra
[name]Zola[/name]
The only person I “know” named [name]Zosia[/name] is [name]Zosia[/name] Mamet- pronounced [name]Zo[/name]-sha. It’s possible she’s pronouncing it wrong though. You think it’s Zaw sha, like [name]Sasha[/name]?
You can pronounce it however you want, it looks so pretty and zo-sha is much nicer. But it is Polish, and pronounced ZAWSH-uh over there. Unfortunately…
