I know it’s truly up to us the parents, but I wanted to ask as many people as possible before we decide on our daughter’s name.
The names we have on our list are:
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Tiffany[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Kristen[/name_f]
[name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]
There will be middle name, and the last name starts with an L and is short.
So here are our thoughts on the names:
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - very sweet, adorable, my favorite flower, classy, definitely one of my tops, but it sounds a little off for some reason I can’t quite explain… will be calling her “Rosie” if we decide on this one
[name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] - love the name but have heard so many negative opinions, very unpopular for some reason, many think it’s preppy or even porn-star-ish, which I don’t really understand… used to be a surname so it might be a minus
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - adore the name and also its nickname [name_f]Char[/name_f], but such negative associations with the nickname (what a shame, because I’m not a huge fan of nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]), classy, popular but not common
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - countless literary references, very classy, short and lovely, but perhaps too plain? might be good for a middle name
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - love the name, and know that it’s super popular these days along with [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but for some reason sounds dated to me…? not sure if it’s just me or what, but conjures an image of an elegant old lady to me… very classy and sophisticated
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] - also very sweet and lovely like a Southern beauty, but perhaps too common these days
[name_f]Kristen[/name_f] - lovely and fierce, definitely better than [name_f]Christine[/name_f] in my opinion, but does it sound too much like one of those K names that are supposed to start with a C but have been modified to begin with a K because people want to be clever with their baby names? I used to love this name but am not so sure right now… It keeps coming and going, but I’m reluctant to take it off the list very confused - major downside is that I hate the nickname [name_u]Kris[/name_u]
[name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] - pronounced [name_f]Keerstin[/name_f] like [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] Dunst - I personally adore her and think this is a great name but what do you think?
What do you think? I’m not really a fan of anything too fancy or flowery, so our choices are very limited. Am I missing anything? If any of you guys have suggestions based on the names we have chosen, please do share with us. We’d really appreciate it! Thank you!
I’d choose either [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. All very elegant and vintage-y, and suit all ages. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is just too popular and to me has lost its charm, [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] and [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] I simply don’t like and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is cute but sooo popular!
But obviosuly, the decision is up to you and what we, people on the Internet, say shouldn’t be that important. [name_m]Just[/name_m] go with what feel right to you
My favourite by far is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], it is at the top of my list. I think it is a beautiful name. I also like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (I looooove [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]!) and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. I am not sure what the negative associations are with the nickname [name_f]Char[/name_f], but perhaps you would like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]?

My favourite is [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and I would call her that and skip the nickname as it is beautiful in full. It may get shortened by some but the majority of the time people would follow your lead.
I wouldn’t let a nickname that you don’t like put you off from a name- only because if you and the DF want to call her the same thing then that’s what she’ll be called at home. At school her friends may begin to call her something else, but you more than likely won’t hear much of it. I also went to school with two boys who went all the way up through high school by their full names: [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. Never [name_m]Jake[/name_m] or [name_m]Mike[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] go with what feels right! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]… it’s so sweet sounding but also will be professional too when she’s older. Also a big time fan of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] but I usually think of putting it in the middle as well, because although it is beautiful, timeless, and has so many historical references, it kind of sounds like there’s no personality associated with it.
I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] from your list. I don’t know where you live but if you are in the US and worried about popularity I would cross off [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]). [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is closely related to the uber popular [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but feels fresher to me and is much less popular. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are classic, sweet, simple and familiar without being too popular. Both are super popular as middle names though. [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] and [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] (and a little bit [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]) seem very 80’s to me.
I would say, just choose whatever you love!
Others names I would suggest based on what you listed:
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]/[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
My favourites are [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f], but I wouldn’t use those with a one syllable surname personally. I also love [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f], and that would be my first choice from your list with your surname. I love its strength and that it’s not often used.
I also really like [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and they would be good choices, however with a more interesting option like [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] in the offing, I would go for the latter.
I don’t mind [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], and sounds like they would go well with your surname, which is the first criteria I think.
I love…
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] (of course)
[name_f]Kristen[/name_f] (Though, I do love [name_f]Christine[/name_f] as much, if not more.)
[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] are all very popular now, while [name_f]Kristen[/name_f], [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f], and [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] were popular around the 80s. As such, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] actually stands out to me as distinctive, but unfortunately it might not work well with a short last name. (The same applies to [name_f]Rose[/name_f].) It really depends though! [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Law[/name_m] comes to mind as a counterexample, so maybe [name_f]Jane[/name_f] L__ has the same kind of punch to it!
If popularity isn’t an issue for you, then I do think [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is beautiful. You would have a lot more options for nicknames than the two you mentioned, and really, since it’s only two syllables I doubt you’d even need a nickname.
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is growing in popularity though. It’s ranked number 3 on nameberry, which leads me to believe that it will be more popular than [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] in a year or so.
If [name_f]Jane[/name_f] L__ doesn’t seem right, then I would personally go with either [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] or [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f]. (I’m yet another person who doesn’t like [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] - I always think of the jewelry company.) [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] and [name_f]Kristin[/name_f] are international variations of [name_f]Christine[/name_f], so to answer your question, no, [name_f]Kristen[/name_f] with a K does not seem like one of those “creatively spelled” names! I actually like [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] perhaps a bit more, but I’ve known two Kirstens - one who pronounced it [name_m]KEER[/name_m]-sten and another who pronounced it KUHR-sten. My favorite pronunciation is the same one as yours, but I’d be prepared to hear people say it the other way.
