"Girls in white dresses..."

“Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes…” so the song goes about [name]Maria[/name]'s favorite things in The Sound of [name]Music[/name].

It’s a pretty bit of imagery, and I’ve always imagined these anonymous little girls to be named after white flowers, to match their white dresses.

So, I’m asking our Nameberryites for two things.

#1 - Can you please add to my list of feminine names below that represent white flowers?

#2 - Can you please select eight of these names (either from my list below or from additional names that you or others leave here) that you feel go best together, for a group of eight little girls all wearing white dresses? I need just eight names that conjure up the image described.

Blanchefleur (French: White [name]Flower[/name])
[name]Blodwen[/name] (Welsh: White [name]Flower[/name])
[name]Bryony[/name]
[name]Cicely[/name]
[name]Clover[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
Gwenonwy (Welsh: [name]Lily[/name] of the [name]Valley[/name])
[name]Honesty[/name]
[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Jessamine[/name] ([name]Jasmine[/name])
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name] (French: [name]Daisy[/name])
Mayblossom
[name]Melissa[/name]
Paquerette (French: [name]Daisy[/name])
Siasmin (Welsh: [name]Jasmine[/name])
Stellaire (French: Starwort)
Stellaria (Latin: Starwort)

Thanks in advance!

– [name]Nephele[/name]

Here are a few more:

[name]Briallen[/name] – primrose (Welsh)
[name]Caja[/name] – daisy (Cornish)
[name]Calla[/name] (calla lily)
[name]Camellia[/name]
Camri – camomile (Welsh)
Eirlys – snowdrop (Welsh)
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Lillias[/name] – lily
Luneria (honesty)
Meillionen – clover (Welsh)
Rosenwyn – white / fair rose (Cornish)
[name]Susanna[/name] – ‘lily’
[name]Veronica[/name] (figwort)

I would group:

[name]Bryony[/name], [name]Cicely[/name], Eirlys, [name]Lillias[/name], [name]Caja[/name], [name]Jessamine[/name], [name]Calla[/name], [name]Briallen[/name]

or

Rosenwyn, [name]Marguerite[/name], Gwenonwy, Blanchfleur, Stellaria, [name]Jessamine[/name], [name]Camellia[/name], Meillionen

Hmm … a lovely group would be [name]Cicely[/name], [name]Clover[/name], [name]Honesty[/name], Gwenonwy, [name]Marguerite[/name], Siasmin, [name]Lily[/name] (or [name]Liliana[/name]), and [name]Blanche[/name] (I personally prefer simply [name]Blanche[/name], finding Blanchefleur a little too obvious and clunky) or [name]Ivy[/name], as [name]Elea[/name] suggested.

This is a lovely idea!

[name]Elea[/name], how could I have missed Eirlys? I love that name! And your Cornish addition of Rosenwyn is another name that is fast becoming one of my favorites!

As for [name]Briallen[/name]… While I love all Welsh names, isn’t the primrose a yellow flower? ([name]Edit[/name]: I just checked, and one can find white primroses, too!)

Twinkle, I agree with you on Blanchefleur being a little too obvious. It’s still one of my favorite flower names, though, because of its literary connections:

Thanks, both of you, for your input!

[name]Love[/name] the [name]Calla[/name] suggestion also:)

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions and lists of eight! [name]Calla[/name] and [name]Angelica[/name] are definitely two that I should have thought of!

I especially like the suggestion of [name]Angelica[/name], because an “A” name is perfect for the leader of the troop of eight little girls in flowery white dresses.

You’re all brilliant namesters, and your suggestions are much appreciated!

Yes, dear [name]Nephele[/name], but WHAT ARE YOU PLOTTING? And why is no-one as nosey as I am?

I can’t get it down to eight. These are my ten favourites:
[name]Bryony[/name], [name]Cicely[/name], Siasmin, [name]Briallen[/name], [name]Fflur[/name],

Rosenwyn, [name]Marguerite[/name], Gwenonwy, [name]Clover[/name]
xxxxxxx

Hahahaha! [name]Trust[/name] you, [name]Ailsa[/name], to make me reveal my hidden intentions!

Okay, y’all have been helping me re-name the eight pawns (girls in white dresses!) for my favorite, Midsummer [name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name] chess set. Here’s a pic:

The [name]Queen[/name] is [name]Titania[/name], of course. Although sometimes I call her “[name]Arcadia[/name] Dunson” (anagram of “[name]Isadora[/name] [name]Duncan[/name]”).

Thanks for indulging me!

– [name]Nephele[/name]

[name]Just[/name] wanted to add [name]Bianca[/name].

[name]Amaryllis[/name]
[name]Rosalba[/name] “white rose” Latin
[name]Lotus[/name]
Trillium
[name]Viola[/name] (they can be white)
[name]Blodwen[/name] “white flower” Welsh

Now that I’ve seen them, I want to name them! I will start out with some contenders:

[name]Anthea[/name]
Belladonna
[name]Blanca[/name]
[name]Camellia[/name]
[name]Camille[/name]
[name]Fermin[/name]
[name]Ferdinanda[/name]
[name]Guadalupe[/name]
[name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Ianthe[/name]
[name]Jacinta[/name]
[name]Leonida[/name]
Ludmilla
[name]Mercy[/name]
Niodrara
[name]Ottilie[/name]
[name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Queenie[/name]
[name]Rosalba[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Verona[/name]

Final List
[name]Blanca[/name]
[name]Camellia[/name]
[name]Guadalupe[/name]
[name]Jacinta[/name]
[name]Leonida[/name]
Niodrara
[name]Rosalba[/name]
[name]Viviana[/name]

I need to make another list, it’s a list for an L.A. chess girls’ set:
[name]Angel[/name] - [name]Angel[/name]'s flight
[name]Brea[/name] - La [name]Brea[/name] Tar Pits
[name]Catalina[/name] - [name]Catalina[/name] Island
[name]Echo[/name] - [name]Echo[/name] [name]Park[/name]
Melrose - ultimate shopping experience (where I got my pink corduroy wedding shoes with the darker pink plastic soles. My mother-in-law hated them.)
[name]Topanga[/name] - [name]Topanga[/name] [name]Canyon[/name]
[name]Venice[/name] - [name]Venice[/name] [name]Beach[/name]
Zuma - Zuma [name]Beach[/name] (my favorite beach)

JLM, thanks for the add!

Epertis… Ooo, I love white amaryllis! [name]Amaryllis[/name] makes a lovely name, too!

[name]Susan[/name], thanks for that long list! And I like your idea for your L.A. chess set. Now, what do the L.A. pawns look like? My Midsummer [name]Night[/name]'s [name]Dream[/name] pawns look like the fairies Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed.

Next time I’m in L.A. I’ll have to check out Melrose. Those pink corduroy wedding shoes (that you mother-in-law hated – too funny!) sound like my style! Check out my pink poodle shoes that I got from the Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet here in New [name]York[/name]:

The shoes are black velvet, and I don’t think the picture shows up the sparkly pink sequins on the poodles, but they’re there. These have got to be my wackiest pair of shoes – and are among my all-time favorites. I’d love to see a pic of your pink wedding shoes!
