My list:
[name]Grier[/name]
[name]Briar[/name]
[name]Luca[/name] (current favorite)
We can’t agree on names, but I will take the blame for that one. I tend to like a name for awhile and ultimately end up hating it. It’s not that I like the recent trend of boy’s names on girls, because I don’t, it’s just that I don’t like overly girly names. I don’t like frill and I see our daughter more as being more a tom boy. The middle name will more than likely be [name]Jane[/name].
Does anyone have any names you think would satisfy both of our wants? It can’t be popular (top 300) and it can’t be made up. Special props if the name starts with an L!! Thanks so much
Hmm, my first suggestion would have been [name]Elinor[/name] because it’s on the longer, feminine side and shares sounds with [name]Eliana[/name], but isn’t [name]IMO[/name] frilly or girly due to its rather masculine ending and no-nonsense nicknames ([name]Nora[/name], [name]Lee[/name], [name]Lin[/name], [name]Elle[/name]). It also starts with an L sound (if not the letter), and sounds nice with [name]Gideon[/name] and mn [name]Jane[/name]! But it is in the top 300… So I’ll also add:
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name] (less frilly than [name]Lorelei[/name], and since it’s tree-related, not flower-related, could maybe be tomboyish despite its girlish sound?)
[name]Lorna[/name] (also like [name]Lorelei[/name], but simpler)
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Livia[/name] (three syllables in 5 compact letters starting with an L; [name]Liv[/name] is a great short version )
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Margot[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Annika[/name]
[name]Briony[/name]/[name]Bryony[/name] (longer take on [name]Briar[/name] and you could still use it as a nn)
um… … what about my name? It’s not exactly unisex but it’s pretty awesome.
Other L names that aren’t super frilly:
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Larue[/name]/[name]LaRue[/name]
[name]Leighton[/name]
[name]Leta[/name]/[name]Lida[/name]
Lorien (very cool band, too bad it’s so similar to [name]Gideon[/name])
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
I think [name]Luca[/name] is pretty cool. But who knows what your daughter will turn out to be? You could give her a totally masculine name like [name]Louis[/name] or [name]Leo[/name] and she might end up being a little prissy princess!
OK when I think of ‘not too girly multi syllable names’ that might still have femininity about them I think of the following:
[name]Paige[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]
[name]Amber[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Lana[/name]
[name]Leona[/name]
[name]Maya[/name]
[name]Mara[/name]
[name]Sabine[/name]
[name]Zara[/name]
[name]How[/name] do you know your daughter is going to be a tomboy? What if she isn’t? I would suggest giving her a feminine ish name (not too boyish like the ones on your list) but not to girly (like his list) that has a short, spunky nickname.
ex: [name]Lucia[/name] (loo-shuh pr loo-see-uh) and call her [name]Luca[/name] that way if she does want a more feminine name later, there you go. Or [name]Eliana[/name] from your husbands list but call her [name]Eli[/name].
Here’s some more of that style:
girl name – boyish nick name
[name]Christine[/name] – [name]Chris[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] – [name]Matt[/name] or [name]Mattie[/name]
[name]Jacquelin[/name] – [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Maxine[/name] – [name]Max[/name]
[name]Alexis[/name]/[name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexandra[/name] – [name]Alex[/name] or [name]Alec[/name] or [name]Xander[/name] for the last one
[name]Kennedy[/name] – [name]Ken[/name]
[name]Nicole[/name] – [name]Nick[/name] or [name]Cole[/name]
[name]Willow[/name] – [name]Will[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] – [name]Joel[/name] or [name]Jo[/name] or [name]Josie[/name] (I had a REALLY sporty and tomboyish girl names [name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name] at my daycare)
[name]Shawna[/name] – [name]Shawn[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] – [name]Finn[/name] ([name]Finley[/name] is pretty boyish anyway)
[name]Sydney[/name] – [name]Sid[/name]/[name]Syd[/name]
[name]Gabrielle[/name] – [name]Gabe[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]/[name]Georgina[/name]/[name]Georgette[/name] – [name]George[/name]
[name]Rebecca[/name] – Becks or [name]Beck[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name] – [name]Corey[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] – [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Ashley[/name]/[name]Ashlyn[/name]/[name]Ashling[/name]/[name]Asha[/name] – [name]Ash[/name]
A few other unisex names that aren’t too masculine:
[name]Adrienne[/name] – already a traditional boy name turned girly
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Devon[/name]
[name]Emerson[/name]
[name]Emery[/name]
[name]Jordan[/name]
[name]Lane[/name]
[name]Peyton[/name] (known 1 girl names this)
[name]Presley[/name] (I’ve known 2 girls named this)
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Reese[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Skyler[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Rory[/name] (or [name]Aurora[/name] nickname [name]Rory[/name])
My son’s name is Laikon, pronounced like Lake-n. It’s usually a girls name, though not exclusively. Other ways to spell it are Laken, Lakynn, Laekyn, Laiken, Laykin, etc. For a girl, I prefer Laekyn. It’s fairly spunky, tomboyish, and has the benefit of Lake, Ken, or Kenny.
Other unisex/tomboyish names are:
Bernadette
Kacey
Danielle
Shelby
Murphy
Sloane
Rory
Kai
Michaela
Sydney
Jayme
Lakota
Keagan
I second the idea of going for a name that can be girly, or can easily be shortened to a more tomboy-ish name. Mind you, I actually do really like [name]Luca[/name] on a little girl or a little boy.
My favourite for you would be [name]Scarlett[/name] nn [name]Scout[/name]!
I also really like Dantea’s suggestion of [name]Aurora[/name] nn [name]Rory[/name].
A few other names that might work?
[name]Valo[/name]
[name]Brynhild[/name] nn [name]Bryn[/name]
Hesper
[name]Indigo[/name] nn [name]Indi[/name]
[name]Larkin[/name] nn [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name] nn [name]Nell[/name]
[name]Rune[/name]
Samsara nn [name]Sam[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Theodora[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name] / [name]Teddy[/name]
[name]Zola[/name]
Maybe [name]Luciana[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], [name]Lucetta[/name], [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Lucienne[/name] or [name]Lucinda[/name] with nickname [name]Luca[/name]? It gives him a feminine name and you a tomboy nickname. I really like [name]Lucienne[/name] or [name]Lucette[/name].
