[name_m]Hi[/name_m]. This is last second, but we’re having trouble choosing a name and need help asap. Our second daughter has been born and we should really have a name for her before we leave the hospital in under 15 hours. Here’s some info.
Our first daughter is named [name_f]Norah[/name_f], middle name [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
We would like a Scottish/British style name. Below are two names (first and middle) we’re considering.
#1 [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]
Pros: Scottish, full name
Cons: too long?, is [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] too much? good with [name_f]Norah[/name_f]?
#2 [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]
Pros: We really like it
Cons: Not really a British feel, feels like too much of a short form, not formal enough
Or maybe members here have suggestions for a totally different name? TIA
I vote [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. It’s classic and smart and pairs beautifully with [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]! Not too much at all. I think it’s simply darling.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] feels a little modern and nickname-y with [name_f]Norah[/name_f], tbh, and definitely not British.
I love [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]! It goes perfectly with [name_f]Norah[/name_f]. It’s a classic name, not too long in my opinion.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] is sweet but I agree that it does not fit your British vibe. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Calla[/name_f]? [name_f]Callista[/name_f] is pretty but might be a bit much with [name_f]Norah[/name_f] as a sister. I still prefer [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] overall!
Another vote for [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Annie[/name_f] makes a cute nn too.
You could do [name_f]Calla[/name_f] or [name_u]Camille[/name_u] instead of [name_f]Callie[/name_f]. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Callista[/name_f] as well.
You mean the little tyke came out & didn’t tell you what her name was?
I see your problem. They’re both lovely choices. I agree that [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is more British-y. It goes perfectly with [name_f]Norah[/name_f], & isn’t too much at all. It’s fairly simple & pretty. That being said, it kind of seems that you like [name_f]Callie[/name_f] more. I wouldn’t worry about the fact that it’s not very British sounding. It’s a darling name, & I think it fits w/[name_f]Norah[/name_f]. It is a bit nick-namey though. Maybe Callalilie, [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Callista[/name_f], [name_f]Callia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f]?
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is stunning! It sounds lovely next to [name_f]Norah[/name_f].
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] is sweet, but I have to agree with you, it’s too informal for me. It works on older person, but I would use it as a nickname. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]? [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]/e? [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]? [name_f]Camellia[/name_f]?
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is the best option, although i’m not too keen on [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a middle name myself. I’m British and if you want a popular british middle name to go with it i’d suggest [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_u]Leigh[/name_u], or another classic british name like [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Ela[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Ffion[/name_f], [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Paige[/name_f], Etc.
I also think that [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Norah[/name_f] is a lovely sibset! I agree with PP that [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is a bit too nickname-y to stand alone. I love [name_f]Callie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Calista[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I personally think [name_f]Norah[/name_f] & [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] work really well as sister names!
I much prefer [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] with [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], but you should go with the one you really love.
If all thay’sholding you back with [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is worry that it’s too long then rest assured, it is not. It’s a very beautiful name that suits the style you are going for.
But if your apprehension over [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is actually a matter of loving [name_f]Callie[/name_f], go with [name_f]Callie[/name_f]. I agree with others that [name_f]Callie[/name_f] feels all nickname and I longform name would better suit the style you wanted, but that’s all a matter of preference and may not matter for your considerations.
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is my favourite of the two.
If you’re open to other suggestions and you like nicknames (which I assume you do given [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is on your shortlist), then my pick for you would be:
[name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
Both names are Scottish and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is just a little more unexpected in the middle than long-time favourite [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. Congratulations, look forward to hearing what you chose!
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is gorgeous! I don’t think [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is “too much” at all and I think she fits beautifully with [name_f]Norah[/name_f]. [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] isn’t my cup of tea.
I like both [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]!
I don’t think [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is too long and it’s good with [name_f]Norah[/name_f].
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] has indeed not really a British feel and it same more informal. However, if you really like it, that doesn’t have to be a problem.
Since your plus point for [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is “we really like it” –it’s surely the name for this baby! Neither name has any issues that would cause your daughter trouble. [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is not too long or fussy, [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is not too informal to function as a full name in the adult world, and neither [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] nor [name_f]Callie[/name_f] are a shocking pairing with [name_f]Norah[/name_f] (which is very versatile in style). They are both perfectly acceptable and lovely names.
To me, it sounds like a matter of head verses heart. [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] fits your criteria and the matches the things you thought you wanted for your baby’s name. You should love it. But there’s something holding you back…[name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u]. It doesn’t really meet your criteria, or what you had expected you would choose, but the one thing you are very sure about–you adore it. I can see how this would make the decision confusing and challenging.
Ultimately, I’d recommend going with the name you both love. The name you will love calling across the playground, saying to others when you introduce her, and whispering at bedtimes.
Thanks for all the input. It’s greatly appreciated and sometimes you need to hear unbiased opinions from people. Family & friends understandably aren’t going to say anything unfavourable about any name.
Also, I actually find [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] a bit clunky, but I always like to use a middle name to pay tribute and use a family name. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] has been used every generation in our family. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandma would be ecstatic to know that we included it in her name.
