[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
What are some girl names that get shortened instantaneously? Aka, names that get nicknamed almost immediately and by giving the kid that name you’re giving them the nickname. (A [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] to [name_u]Chris[/name_u] level of nicknaming).
I was thinking…
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] to [name_u]Abby[/name_u]
[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] to [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] to [name_u]Jess[/name_u]
[name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] to [name_u]Steph[/name_u]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] to [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
Let me know the name and the nickname it gets shortened to!!
As a [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] who tried to stick with the full name and now goes exclusively by [name_u]Sam[/name_u] I can confirm that that’s pretty inevitable
[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] - Sue/Suzie
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - [name_f]Jen[/name_f]
[name_f]Deborah[/name_f] - Deb/Debbie
[name_f]Barbara[/name_f] - [name_f]Barb[/name_f]
[name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] - Kate/Katie
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] - [name_u]Gabby[/name_u]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] - Vicky/Tori
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] - [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Em[/name_f]- and [name_f]El[/name_f]- names being shortened to Em/Emmy and Elle/Ellie
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] - [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_u]Sydney[/name_u] - [name_u]Syd[/name_u]
Isabelle/a - Izzy
Olivia - Liv
Sophia/ie - Soph
Alexandra - Alex
Gabriella - Gabby
Natalie - Nat
Natasha - Tash
I think there’s another slightly different category where the names would get a short form if someone knew them well but it wouldn’t feel super natural unless you were closer to them. I feel like that’s super convoluted, but I mean:
Elsie/Ella - Els
Lucy/Louisa/Louise - Lou
Ruby - Rubes, Ru
Millie - Mills
Chloe - Chlo
Hannah - Han
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - [name_f]Jen[/name_f] [name_f]Jennie[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] - [name_f]Gen[/name_f], [name_f]Gennie[/name_f]
Louise/Louisa - [name_u]Lou[/name_u]
Frances/Francesca - [name_u]Fran[/name_u]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - Cath/Cat (applies to all it’s varients
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and all [name_u]Jo[/name_u] starting names - [name_u]Jo[/name_u]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - [name_f]Becky[/name_f], [name_f]Becca[/name_f], ,Becks
I think Gwinith would be [name_u]Gwin[/name_u] rather than [name_f]Gwen[/name_f].
[name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] - [name_u]Jackie[/name_u]
[name_f]Tamara[/name_f] - Tam/Tammy
Rosemary/Rosemarie and all [name_f]Rose[/name_f] starting names might become [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosie[/name_f].
Always choose a name where you like the shortened versions or choose a one-syllable name where shortening is not necessary.
As a Sophie, who always introduces herself as such, can confirm it’s shortened by a lot of people. It doesn’t really bother me which I’m called and I’ll roll with either - as long as you don’t call me Sophia, in which case I will correct you as that’s not my name.
I am called [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and get [name_f]Di[/name_f] from some people, but not everyone. But if someone assumes I’m called [name_f]Diane[/name_f], which has happened often, I correct them instantaneously these days. I used to put up with it, but after an examining board put [name_f]Diane[/name_f] on my certificate, (whom I telephoned and fumed at) and the world-famous late [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f], I won’t anymore. People shouldn’t shorten others names without permission really, it is rude to, I think. People also need to listen properly when someone is telling them their name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister is a [name_f]Pamela[/name_f] who hates being called [name_f]Pam[/name_f], but sooooo many people automatically shorten her name. Which is why I won’t pick a name with a potential nickname that I don’t like. As a [name_f]Cathryn[/name_f] I don’t have the same problem I guess because there are multiple nickname possibilities and people don’t assume which one I use.
Maybe I’m still living in a little fantasy world, but I haven’t experienced names being shortened without people asking! [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Megan[/name_f], and there have only been a couple people that jump to [name_f]Meg[/name_f]. I also know Elizabeths, Christophers, Timothys, etc. who don’t go by anything else.
I think every name will get shortened from time to time (unless they’re only one syllable already) like I’m [name_f]Molly[/name_f] but have been called [name_f]Moll[/name_f] or [name_u]Mo[/name_u] on occasion. But I know Caitlyn’s and Kathryn’s who go by their full name and never have it shortened. However, these are the ones that I think are most likely to be shortened instinctively unless corrected
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] - [name_f]Jen[/name_f] or [name_f]Jenny[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] - [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] / [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] / [name_f]Alexia[/name_f] - [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], or [name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] / [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] - [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] - [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_u]Win[/name_u]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] - [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_u]Lilian[/name_u] / [name_f]Lilianna[/name_f] - [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Christine[/name_f] - [name_f]Chrissie[/name_f] or [name_u]Chris[/name_u]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f] - [name_u]Toni[/name_u] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] / [name_u]Allison[/name_u] - [name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] - [name_u]Cass[/name_u] or [name_f]Cassie[/name_f]
