Give me your weird, unusual, rare, and very rare

I’m trying to collect as many weird, unusual, rare, and very rare names as I can. Since I finished the one novel, and had unusual names in it, I need a new list for this next one. Surprise me and give me things I’ve never heard before!

It can be ancient, nature related, anything. Thank you!

Esha and Caaz. These are two little girls at my sister’s school.

The most unusual girls that I’ve ever met are [name]Wilda[/name] and [name]Yamina[/name]. The most unusual boys are [name]Stoney[/name] and Gervon.

[name]Do[/name] they have to be attractive? I’m compiling lists of the most interesting saint’s names (I’ve only gotten up to E) and there are some doozies. Among what I’ve found:
Aleydis (F- I really like this one!)
Aizan (m)
Bobinus (m)
Amor (m)
Dyfnog (m)
Buriana (f)

They don’t necessarily have to be overly attractive. I like Aizan from that list and Buriana. I actually find Buriana sort of pretty in an awkward way.

For an idea, I love Eilonwy for girls and [name]Endymion[/name], Endellion, and Eirwyn for boys which I find almost one one have heard of. Noticed those all start with an E but the names you guys suggest don’t have to :stuck_out_tongue:

My grandma’s middle name was Folus. I’ve never heard that one before. Others female names: Idora, Eska, Philotheta

Wow [name]Araminta[/name]! Great lists. While I’ve heard of most of those names (and I don’t find a lot of them rare) and do find them all in the unusual camp, and I love a lot of them! Very good lists! Thanks.

More names please?

Thanks for this post! I was going to make a post like this because I need some entertainment while I’m still sick, I will try to find some good ones for you later, I’m just so exhausted and drugged off and on from this kidney business. Sorry if I’m just rambling!

[name]Don[/name]'t worry about it. I’ve been wanting to make a post like this for a while. I love these kinds of names. Incidentally, I’ve never heard of Bérangère from your list. What’s it mean and how do you say it?

I cut and paste these from another forum, they’re from an ancient and rare French name post. I’m on sorry for any repeats, some of them may be normal to us so excuse any obvious ones and the format.

[name]Do[/name] you know the meanings of those names?

Caieta - She was [name]Aeneas[/name]’ wet-nurse in [name]Roman[/name] mythology. According to the Wikipedia page for the city of Gaeta, it might mean cave: “It is the ancient Caieta, situated on the slopes of the [name]Torre[/name] di [name]Orlando[/name], a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Gaeta was an ancient Ionian colony of the Samians according to Strabo, who believed the name stemmed from the Greek kaiétas, which means “cave”, probably referring to the several harbours. According to [name]Virgil[/name]‘s Aeneid (vii.1–9), Caieta was [name]Aeneas[/name]’ (another legend says Ascanius’) wet-nurse, whom he buried here.”
Auxesia - “Increaser.” A Greek goddess of plant growth.
Sanziana - According to Wikipedia, “Sânziană is the Romanian name for gentle fairies who play an important part in local folklore, also used to designate the Galium verum or Cruciata laevipes flowers. Under the plural form Sânziene, the word designates an annual festival in the fairies’ honor. Etymologically, the name stands for sân (common abbreviation of sfânt - “saint”, “holy”) and zână (a word used for fairies in general). Another likely etymology is that the word comes from the Latin Sancta [name]Diana[/name], the [name]Roman[/name] goddess of the hunt and moon, also celebrated in [name]Roman[/name] [name]Dacia[/name] (ancient Romania). [name]Diana[/name] was known to be the virgin goddess and looked after virgins and women. She was one of the three maiden goddesses, [name]Diana[/name], [name]Minerva[/name] and [name]Vesta[/name], who swore never to marry. […] In the form Sânziana (“the sânziană”), the word has also come to be used as a female name. It is notably used as such in [name]Vasile[/name] Alecsandri’s comedy Sânziana şi Pepelea (later an opera by [name]George[/name] [name]Steph[/name]ănescu).”
Rumina - She was a [name]Roman[/name] goddess who protected nursing mothers and infants. The best I can find for the meaning of her name is that her temple was near an important fig tree called the Ficus Ruminalis, and according to the tree’s Wikipedia page, “The name Ruminalis was connected by some Romans to rumis or ruma, “teat, breast,” but modern linguists think it is more likely related to the names [name]Roma[/name] and [name]Romulus[/name], which may be based on rumon, perhaps a word for “river” or an archaic name for the Tiber.” I’m guessing Rumina has a similar etymology.

Llevellys - He’s a character in the Mabinogion. The best I can find is that his name might be related to Lleu or Lugus, which probably meant “light” or “brightness.”
Pellinore - He was an ancient Welsh king, but I’m not sure what his name means.

[name]Hope[/name] that helped!

[name]Ah[/name] thanks! I don’t know many of the [name]Roman[/name] gods and goddess names (other than the main ones) which is why those names are so new to me.

Auxesia – I went and looked through my books wondering why I’d never seen this as a plant growth goddess as it should have been in the same section as [name]Persephone[/name], and my texts say Auxo is the goddess of plant growth and Auxesia is a local fertility goddess. Either way, love the sound.

My favorites are Sanziana (love the Romanian fairies!) and Pellinore! Thanks
