"Giveaway" Canadian names

Hello Canadian berries (and general admirers of Canada)! This one’s for you

Long story short: while pondering alternatives for the name [name_m]Colson[/name_m] today, Molson crossed my mind and I got to chuckle over the thought of naming a kid after a brand of beer, Molson Canadian. It got me wondering if people outside of Canada would even know this reference (I don’t drink it and I’m not sure if its sold elsewhere).

So it gave me an idea. If you were travelling abroad and met someone new, what names would give you pause and make you wonder if you were meeting a fellow Canadian? I’d describe these as “giveaway” Canadian names.

The first one I thought of:
[name_u]Crosby[/name_u] (after Sidney Crosby, a beloved hockey player)

Feel free to make this post for other “giveaway” names, this is just what was near and dear to my own heart

I’m not Canadian and I have no idea what Molson Canadian is. I’m also not drinking age, but my guess is that’s a Canadian thing.

I do know the reference. I live in the US.

One that I’ve heard is [name_m]Fraser[/name_m].
Background of mine: There is a Canadian Youtuber who lives in England. She and her husband named their oldest son Fraser in honour of her home country.

Edited to add that the reason [name_u]Crosby[/name_u] sounds like such a Canadian name is that he is a very well known Canadian hockey player, haha! I guess the post might not make a ton of sense if you don’t know that :ok_woman:

I know a young [name_u]Crosby[/name_u] that lives in the US to American parents, so that’s a fun coincidence!

Jasper because of [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] National [name_u]Park[/name_u] and the town of [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], which we love to visit. I know it has become popular in many places where they wouldn’t have that specific connection.

S/O has suggested [name_u]Crosby[/name_u] and quite literally “[name_m]Auston[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]” after NHL players  I do actually quite like [name_m]Auston[/name_m] though lol.

I’d probably assume someone was Canadian if they were named [name_f]Maple[/name_f], to be honest :woman_shrugging: It just makes me think of the Leafs (my favourite hockey team) and quite honestly, I’m surprised my stereotypically Canadian (eh? ) partner hasn’t suggested this yet.

I’d be split on that one. I would think of [name_f]Canada[/name_f], but also [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_f]England[/name_f] and the fresh maple syrup as one of my favourite things is the fresh tapped syrup from [name_m]Vermont[/name_m].

I guess maple syrup can in theory come from other places, but it’s pretty darn huge in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], haha. It’s our FLAG! And [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] makes 90% of the entire world’s maple syrup!

For me, it’s the memory associated. Otherwise it probably wouldn’t have occurred to me and [name_f]Canada[/name_f] would be my only thought when I hear [name_f]Maple[/name_f].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] saw another one in the latest blog article - [name_m]Whistler[/name_m]! Another amazing Canadian town, famous for its mountain resorts

I would suggest Mariève/Marie-[name_f]Eve[/name_f]. It seems to be more common in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] (among [name_u]French[/name_u]-speaking Canadians I assume) than anywhere else. I really like that name.

Marie-[name_f]Soleil[/name_f] too.

Ah interesting! I actually met a [name_u]Marie[/name_u]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f] while traveling in Europe and she was indeed [name_u]French[/name_u] Canadian! I wonder what it is that separates [name_u]French[/name_u] Canadian names from [name_u]French[/name_u] names? I don’t know many [name_u]French[/name_u] people to compare. I wonder if it is the double names that are more Canadian?

Thought of another one today - [name_m]Donovan[/name_m]! I only associate this name with Canadian Olympic athlete [name_m]Donovan[/name_m] [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]

Oooooh, I love this discussion question! Canadian berries need more representation on this site. I can only speak for folks in [name_f]English[/name_f] [name_f]Canada[/name_f] because I don’t know a lot about [name_u]French[/name_u] Canadian names.

The names I thought of:
[name_m]Gordon[/name_m] ([name_m]Gord[/name_m] Downie, [name_m]Gord[/name_m] [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u], [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] Lightfoot, [name_m]Gordie[/name_m] [name_m]Howe[/name_m])
[name_m]Drake[/name_m]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] ([name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_m]Desmond[/name_m])
[name_u]Fox[/name_u] ([name_u]Terry[/name_u] [name_u]Fox[/name_u], [name_u]Michael[/name_u] J [name_u]Fox[/name_u])
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]
[name_f]Buffy[/name_f]
[name_f]Alanis[/name_f]
[name_f]Avril[/name_f]
[name_u]Anne[/name_u]/Avonlea/Lucy/Maud
[name_m]Dawson[/name_m] ([name_m]Dawson[/name_m]’s [name_u]Creek[/name_u])
[name_m]Fraser[/name_m]
[name_m]Kiefer[/name_m]
[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] (PMs, river)
[name_f]Shania[/name_f]
[name_m]Wayne[/name_m] ([name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gretzky, Letterkenny)
[name_m]Alan[/name_m] ([name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_m]Doyle[/name_m], [name_m]Allan[/name_m] Hawco, [name_m]Alan[/name_m] Thicke)
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m] ([name_m]Donovan[/name_m] [name_u]Bailey[/name_u])

Ooh and of course the [name_m]Layton[/name_m] spelling of the name is a dead giveaway for us fans of [name_m]Jack[/name_m]!:grin:

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], see I instantly think Scottish when I hear [name_m]Fraser[/name_m].

[name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_m]Whistler[/name_m], [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], [name_u]Fox[/name_u] and [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] are particularly fab :canada:

And @Ehrob1 I actually think Winnipeg would be an adorable name! Apparently [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh was named after a bear cub named Winnipeg :hugs:

i’d possibly go with [name_m]Morris[/name_m] after [name_m]Craig[/name_m] and [name_m]Mark[/name_m] McMorris, the snowboarders

Not exactly what you meant, but I’ve noticed a lot of younger Canadians tend to have more ‘‘dated’’ in the US/England names?
[name_f]My[/name_f] girlfriend is in high school and she’s named [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. She has friends [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_u]Camryn[/name_u], [name_f]Jeanine[/name_f], etc.
Though maybe that’s just where she’s from and not all of [name_f]Canada[/name_f]!
