Glucose Tolerance Test

My next appointment is for the GTT and they didn’t tell me anything about it except that I’m going to be drinking a very sweet drink. I’ll be 11 weeks when I have to take the test, but I thought it was done well into the 2nd trimester? [name_f]Do[/name_f] I eat before I take it? Not eat?

During my first pregnancy I had it at 11/12 weeks as well as in my second trimester. They usually give it to you early if there is family history of diabetes. In my case my brother is diabetic so they check it early just in case. This time they decided to wait and just do it the second trimester.

You can eat before it. Basically when you get there they will give you the nasty sickly sweet drink and you chug it. Then you cannot eat or chew gum for an hour and they take your blood after the hour.

You usually don’t get tested for GD until 28 weeks UNLESS you have a higher risk of GD (such as having PCOS or being overweight) or a family history of diabetes.

I have PCOS and took a 2 hour test before getting pregnant to check my insulin, so my doctor didn’t have me take the test again until 28 weeks since I passed 2 hour one.

For the 1 hour test, you don’t have to fast. If you fail the 1 hour, they make you take a 3 hour test, and that’s the one you have to fast 12 hours before. I ended up failing the 1 hour, but passed the 3 hour, so was not diagnosed with GD.

For the 1 hour, I would recommend not eating anything sweet/sugary or with a lot of carbs as I think that’s what caused me to fail by a few points. I had a bowl of lucky charms for breakfast. I had a cousin who had the same thing happen, but all she had was a glass of juice before her test.

But know if you don’t pass the 1 hour, you still might not have GD. You can always pass the 3 hour test.

You should ask your doctor if you have any questions, but…

I had the glucose tolerance test at 26 weeks. I wasn’t allowed to eat or drink anything beforehand. The drink was smaller than I expected and not nearly as disgusting as everyone said! The worst part was the waiting as I had to hang about for three hours and they tested my blood every hour.
