Good friends stole our boy name. Help!

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,

Our dear friends had a baby a few days ago and named him [name]Theodore[/name]. It is my absolute favorite boy name and the only one that I really loved as a brother for our first-born [name]Susanna[/name]. Now we can’t use it and I am super bummed. I’m happy for them, but this really stinks…

None of my other boy names seem to measure up to the strength of [name]Theodore[/name] with the sweetness of [name]Theo[/name] as a nickname. Here are some that we are considering, but I’m not sure any is quite right. Help!!!

[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Wesley[/name]
[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name]
[name]Orson[/name]
[name]Cole[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]

Names I like but are BAD with our consonant heavy surname that starts with “s” and is two syllables, ends in “er”.

[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]

Hmmm. I’m a fan of a lot of vintage names. Well, here’s some suggestions.

[name]Quinnton[/name] (or [name]Quinn[/name])
[name]Zachary[/name]
[name]Ashton[/name]
[name]August[/name]
[name]Parker[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Edwin[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]

If you keep looking, I’m sure you’ll find a perfect match!

Thanks, I do like [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Emmett[/name]!

Are you expecting?
Would the two [name]Theo[/name]'s be close in age?
[name]How[/name] far away will they live?

Maybe the fact that your friend ‘took’ the name isn’t as big of a deal as it seems now?

I do love [name]Wallace[/name], because then [name]Wally[/name] can be a nickname, and I find that absolutely adorable! A name that’s someone similar to [name]Theodore[/name], just a bit more out there, is [name]Thaddeus[/name], the old Greek hero. [name]Tad[/name] for a nickname is cute, too! [name]Reuben[/name] doesn’t offer any nicknames, but I feel it fits right in with your list of semi-old school, sweet, warm names. Names that you might enjoy are:
[name]Charles[/name] (I’ve always loved [name]Charlie[/name]!)
[name]Thaddeus[/name]
[name]Reuben[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name] (you could call him [name]Gabe[/name], which is cute!)
[name]William[/name] (endless nickname possibilities!)
Rasmussen (I know one who goes by [name]Raz[/name]- this name isn’t exactly the warm, kind names like on your list, but it’s interesting and quirky!)
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]David[/name] or [name]Davis[/name] with the nickname of [name]Davey[/name], which is one of my all-time favorites!
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Harvey[/name]
[name]Chace[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Bruce[/name]
[name]Dexter[/name] (you could call him [name]Dex[/name], which I think is adorable)
[name]Oz[/name]
[name]Elias[/name]
[name]Toby[/name]
[name]Erich[/name]

No, not expecting, but maybe in a year! The Theos would be 2 states away, but we are in the same group of friends. It just doesn’t seem right!

[name]Leopold[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name].
[name]Edward[/name] nn [name]Teddy[/name]
[name]Fredrick[/name] nn [name]Freddy[/name]
[name]Thomason[/name] nn [name]Tommy[/name]
[name]Mathias[/name] nn [name]Mat[/name] or [name]Matteo[/name] nn [name]Meo[/name]/[name]Moe[/name]
[name]Myron[/name] nn Miro

I do like [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Hugo[/name] from your list. [name]Wallace[/name] is pretty cute. I recently met a baby [name]Willis[/name] which as grown on me.

Goodluck

Hmm…you are making me think more about [name]Wallace[/name]. I do like [name]Wally[/name] as a nn!

I like [name]Wesley[/name] nn [name]Wes[/name] a lot. [name]Wally[/name] is pretty cute, too. You have a lot of other good choices on your list. But, honestly, you may still be able to use [name]Theo[/name] if it means that much to you. Your friends may not mind if you explain it to them. They might not even be planning on calling their [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Theo[/name]. He could be called [name]Teddy[/name].

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I would still use the name. If they lived in the same town and you were due in a week, I’d say yeah, go for a plan B, but otherwise, there are many Theodores out there and it obviously means a lot to you. Maybe you’ll have a girl and the dilemma will be avoided

[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Wesley[/name]
[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name]
[name]Orson[/name]
[name]Cole[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]

Names I like but are BAD with our consonant heavy surname that starts with “s” and is two syllables, ends in “er”.

[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]

First, you have good taste. [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Roscoe[/name], [name]Milo[/name], [name]Wallace[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] are all names on my long list. [name]Roscoe[/name] and [name]Miles[/name]/[name]Milo[/name] are in our final two for this babe. So thumbs up.

I agree with the other poster who said [name]Wallace[/name] seems to fit what you are looking for. It’s sweet, strong, [name]Wally[/name] is adorable, and also presidential like [name]Theodore[/name].

Other ideas: [name]Abraham[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Samson[/name], [name]Walter[/name], or [name]Felix[/name]?

I say use [name]Theodore[/name] anyway for reasons stated by other posters, but also wanted to mention [name]Leonard[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name].

I always link [name]Sebastian[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] togeather in my head so that’s my first suggustion for you, Sebastion, nn [name]Seb[/name] or [name]Bas[/name]. I do however agree with some of the pp who said you could still use [name]Theodore[/name] if you really wanted to!
From your list I love [name]Wesley[/name] nn [name]Wes[/name]. I also really like the suggustion of a [name]Leo[/name]- name for you. Other ideas. . .
[name]Silas[/name] nn [name]Sy[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name] nn Gid
[name]Calvin[/name] nn [name]Cal[/name] (or any other [name]Cal[/name] name)
[name]Nathaniel[/name] nn [name]Nate[/name]
[name]Truman[/name] nn [name]Tru[/name] (I actually know a little boy named this and it works well)
[name]Gilbert[/name] nn [name]Gil[/name]
[name]Alexander[/name] nn [name]Alec[/name] or [name]Zane[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name] nn [name]Zeke[/name]
[name]Malcolm[/name] nn [name]Mal[/name] or [name]Cole[/name] or [name]Cal[/name]
[name]Alaric[/name] nn [name]Alec[/name] or [name]Al[/name]
[name]George[/name]
[name]Henry[/name] nn [name]Hank[/name]
[name]Bennet[/name] nn [name]Ben[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name] nn [name]Beck[/name]
[name]Breccan[/name]
Good luck finding the perfect name!

Yay! Thank you! You all have wonderful taste. Appreciate the helpful feedback.

Thank you! Very excited that you are considering [name]Roscoe[/name]. I love that name. My hubby’s not sold, but I think it’s strong, fun and new!

I love [name]Elliott[/name] and [name]Julian[/name] from your list.

[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Wesley[/name]
[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Roscoe[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name]
[name]Orson[/name]
[name]Cole[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]

My favorite names for your list are [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Wesley[/name], and [name]Milo[/name]. I don’t think [name]Cormac[/name] and [name]Roscoe[/name] are as classic as the other names on your list. Here are some other suggestions:
[name]Timothy[/name]
[name]Roger[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Connor[/name]
[name]Lawrence[/name]

I do think you could use [name]Theodore[/name]. If the two kids aren’t likely to meet often. My mom thinks it cool when people she knows pick the same name. She say things like “Their [name]Katie[/name] is the same age our [name]Katie[/name], etc.” I don’t think it’s a big deal. I think [name]Theodore[/name] is common enough it could used more than once.

Still if it’s any help [name]Theo[/name] could also be used on its own. [name]Theo[/name] is also a nickname for [name]Theobald[/name], [name]Theodis[/name], [name]Theodoric[/name], Theomond, and Theophilius.
[name]Theodore[/name] means gift of god. [name]Matthew[/name] also means gift of god. There are [name]Matteo[/name] nn [name]Teo[/name] and [name]Mattheo[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name].

Good [name]Luck[/name]!

[name]Wallace[/name] is a great option
I also think [name]Walter[/name] has some old school charm, with the same great nickname…

Also wanted to suggest [name]Arthur[/name]

Ooh [name]Matteo[/name] nn [name]Teo[/name] is a great suggestion! I do love [name]Theo[/name] too, but you have a great list and good suggestions. I might have missed it scrolling through the other replies quickly, but I didnt see [name]August[/name]/[name]Augustus[/name]/[name]Augusten[/name] nn [name]Gus[/name] or Auggie. Also, [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Milo[/name] made me think of [name]Viggo[/name], [name]Enzo[/name], and [name]Otto[/name].

[name]Everett[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] were the first two names that came to mind for you.

I also agree with a pp that said to use [name]Theodore[/name], as you love it so much. [name]How[/name] about talking to your friend - tell her how much you love the name, and that it was on your list should you have a boy? She may be pleasantly surprised/flattered, and she may tell you that she wouldn’t mind you using the name.
