We are considering [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] for one of our twin boys due this fall but we have a dilemma. DHs little bro is named [name_u]Jordan[/name_u], which is awfully close (he would love it, he always tells us he wants us to name a kid after him). Uncle [name_m]Jordon[/name_m] is often called Jord or [name_m]Jordy[/name_m], and baby [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] would likely be called [name_m]Gord[/name_m] or [name_m]Gordy[/name_m] on a relatively frequent basis. We live minutes from [name_m]BIL[/name_m] and we’re a very close family so we’ll see him a lot. Are they took close for uncle and nephew?
Any alternative nicknames for [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] that would help set it apart from [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]? Middle name will be [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] or [name_m]Rutherford[/name_m].
I think if your brother in law doesn’t mind (and actually wants) your son to have a name similar to his, [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] is great! It’s a cute connection between nephew and uncle that may create the beginning of a lifelong bond! Outside of your family, no one will know the similarity unless you want to tell them, so I say go for it. If you choose [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] for his middle name, you could call him [name_u]Danny[/name_u] or “G.D.” in situations where he’ll be with Uncle [name_u]Jordan[/name_u]. If you go with [name_m]Rutherford[/name_m], you could use [name_m]Ford[/name_m].
Other nicknames for [name_m]Gordon[/name_m]:
[name_m]Gordo[/name_m], [name_m]Don[/name_m], [name_m]Donny[/name_m], [name_m]Gonzo[/name_m]
@katiem333 - I guess that’s the downside of using family names in the middle. My FIL is [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] “[name_m]Dan[/name_m]/[name_u]Danny[/name_u]” and my maiden name is [name_m]Ford[/name_m], so those nicknames are out [name_f]IMO[/name_f] but we’ll keep looking!
I agree with pp. If your [name_m]BIL[/name_m] is happy with it, go for it! As for nicknames, I’m not sure beyond the usual [name_m]Gord[/name_m] or [name_m]Gordy[/name_m]. It may be something that just comes naturally after you get to know your little guy.
It’s just fine! Extended families often have same/similar names and these can be a wonderful connection between relatives. I’m sure everyone will figure out how to adapt.
I don’t think they’re too close for uncle and nephew. I know sisters called [name_f]Mandi[/name_f] and [name_f]Sandie[/name_f], and they don’t think anything of it. If you’re looking for another nickname for [name_m]Gordon[/name_m], there’s [name_m]Donny[/name_m] and [name_f]Dorry[/name_f], although [name_f]Dorry[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch.
