I’ve always liked the name [name_m]Gawain[/name_m] for boys (pronounced Go-wain or Go-win), but there doesn’t seem to be a feminine form. Yesterday I was playing D&D with my family and came up with Gowina. Most of the older people thought it was hilarious and my brother said it sounded like “go, weener”.
What do you guys think of the name? Should it stay in D&D or could it be a real name?
I think it would have to be pronounced Go-waina or else it’d sound like “go, weener” as your brother said.
I think I’d spell it Gawaina. I would personally not use it, but it could be usable.
I’m not really a fan of Gowina, but I think Govina is a bit better.
From behindthename I found the name Gavino. Though etymologically unrelated to [name_m]Gawain[/name_m], it says:
“From the Late Latin name Gabinus, which possibly referred to the ancient city of Gabii in central [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_m]Gavino[/name_m] was martyred in [name_f]Sardinia[/name_f] in the 3rd century.” Perhaps the feminine form Gavina or [name_f]Gabina[/name_f] may appeal to you?
