Seeing as a lot of people on here seem to like old-fashioned names, I thought it would be interesting to share our grandparent’s names, and possibly our great-grandparent’s names! Here’s mine…
I only know the greats on my mother’s side. [name]Robert[/name] & [name]Louise[/name] are my dad’s parents & I’ve never met any of his family so they’re more in the unusable name category than the family name category for me!
[name]John[/name] and [name]Olive[/name]
[name]Minnie[/name] and [name]Frederick[/name]
[name]Cougar[/name] (real name was [name]John[/name], usually went by [name]Cougar[/name] or [name]Jack[/name]–we great-grandkids called him [name]Cougar[/name] [name]Jack[/name]) and [name]Maude[/name]
[name]Wilford[/name] and Franceszka (went by [name]Frances[/name])
[name]Set[/name] of Greats:
[name]Ethel[/name] [name]Rose[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Set[/name] of Greats:
[name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name]
Interestingly, it was a tradition for a while to name your first son [name]Joseph[/name] or [name]John[/name] and name one of your younger sons [name]Aloysius[/name]. I thought this was a pretty cool name. My grandma said they called him [name]Al[/name]. I think Aloy would have been a cooler nickname.
Paternal: [name]Virginia[/name] [name]Carol[/name] and [name]Eugene[/name] (don’t know his middle); her previous husband was [name]Donald[/name] [name]Howard[/name]. Her mother was [name]Blanche[/name]…I don’t know [name]Blanche[/name]'s middle name but some of her siblings were [name]Dean[/name], [name]Thelma[/name], [name]Fred[/name], and [name]Edna[/name]. Also on this side is an [name]Earlene[/name]. I was always intrigued by her name.
Maternal: [name]Mary[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] [name]Wade[/name]. [name]Mary[/name] had the following siblings: [name]Hattie[/name] [name]Bell[/name], [name]William[/name] Reimer and Reimer [name]William[/name] (twins!! O.O We called them Uncle W.R. and Uncle R.W.), and [name]Martha[/name] [name]Lou[/name].
Maternal greats and great-greats:
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Iva[/name] (went by [name]Iva[/name] as a girl, then started going by [name]Helen[/name] later on)
[name]George[/name]
[name]Wally[/name] (not sure if short for [name]Walter[/name], [name]Wallace[/name], ?)
[name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Bertha[/name] (went by E.B., pronounced to rhyme with [name]Edie[/name])
[name]Julius[/name] [name]Herman[/name]
[name]Gladys[/name] [name]Kay[/name] (went by [name]Mim[/name]!)
[name]Albertina[/name] [name]Frederica[/name]
[name]Rosena[/name]
[name]Carl[/name] [name]Frederic[/name]
Paternal greats:
Evalenia
[name]Philemon[/name]
[name]Bessie[/name] [name]Rea[/name]
Sigh (this is fascinating to me, especially because his siblings were [name]Samuel[/name], [name]Alexander[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]James[/name], and [name]Sarah[/name]!)
I also have a step-grandma:
[name]Virginia[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name])
and her mother was my G-Gma [name]Charlotte[/name].
My grandmother’s parents were [name]Harold[/name] & [name]Stella[/name] [name]Mae[/name]. They also had [name]Phyllis[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Verla[/name], [name]Harold[/name], [name]Jr[/name]., [name]Dorothy[/name] & [name]Larry[/name].
The one I find the most interesting was [name]Greta[/name]'s husband’s name. His parents wanted to name him after his dad, but rather than name him [name]William[/name] [name]Jr[/name]. They just named him [name]Junior[/name]. As a teenager, his mates nicknamed him “Dude” and it stuck, so to me he’s always been Uncle Dude.
Paternal:
[name]Frederica[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] (she went by [name]Freida[/name])
[name]George[/name] [name]Henry[/name]
[name]Freida[/name] later married [name]Jack[/name], while [name]George[/name] married [name]Esme[/name]. IDK much about [name]Nan[/name]'s side, but Granddad’s mum’s name was [name]Margery[/name], called [name]Margie[/name].

Paternal Grandparents: [name]Charles[/name] and [name]Cynthia[/name]
Maternal Great-Grandparents: [name]Frank[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name], [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name] (but she always went by [name]Nancy[/name])
Paternal Grandparents: [name]John[/name] and [name]Josie[/name], [name]Della[/name] and some name that started with an N (I only know his initials, unfortunately)

[name]Eileen[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Claud[/name] (ALWAYS went by [name]Claud[/name]. I only recently found out his real name.)
[name]Sylvia[/name]
For a few generations before [name]Arthur[/name] and [name]Mary[/name], there are many [name]Marys[/name] and Johns and the like. Skipping back to the greatx9 grandmother, her name was [name]Rosamond[/name].
