Graveyard Names

In wandering old graveyards and skimming the Find-a-Grave website, I’ve come across about eight pages of names I’ve never heard of. I won’t post them all, but here are some of the interesting ones:

Wemory (born 1876)

Bone (born 1852)

Tryphena (birth unknown, died 1877)

Monema (found this on SEVERAL tombstones from the late 1800s in different graveyards, and I love it. I assume it’s pronounced mo-NEE-ma. I would consider naming a daughter this.)

Lovelia (born 1866)

[name]Zenobia[/name] (born 1915)

[name]Olin[/name] (both dates unknown)

[name]Permelia[/name] (born 1838)

[name]Lovina[/name] (born 1823)

[name]Kittie[/name] [name]Belle[/name] (born 1882)

Memory [name]Jo[/name] (born 1920)

[name]Tressa[/name] (born 1905)

Gabbert (born 1909)

Kipland (birth unknown, died 2005)

Othelda (middle name, born 1900)

Brower (born 1892)

Oh wow. A lot of those would be really cool names for book characters. I like [name]Olin[/name]. Is it for a girl or boy?

The genders for most of these were unclear. I would assume that back then [name]Olin[/name] would be a boy. Today I could see it being unisex.

I went to high school with a male [name]Olin[/name].

[name]Zenobia[/name] was fairly common in New [name]England[/name] in the 18th and early 19th centuries. I grew up in Connecticut, and we have a wealth of interesting names.

I never imagined anyone else went round graveyards looking at the names - there really is a community for everybody on the web!
I really like [name]Zenobia[/name], which is in all my babyname books, but most of the others are new to me too. Bone is really odd! Cool research, thank you

Wemory (born 1876) – Interesting! I sort of like this sound.

Bone (born 1852) – what? really?

Tryphena (birth unknown, died 1877) – This is actually quite cool

Monema – interesting, but not something I like

Lovelia (born 1866) – very cute

[name]Zenobia[/name] (born 1915) – I’ve heard this one on here and other places, and I really love it!

[name]Olin[/name] (both dates unknown) – That has a very nice sound and [name]Ollie[/name] is cute

[name]Permelia[/name] (born 1838) – A little much for me. The sound is just weird

[name]Lovina[/name] (born 1823) – Pretty!

[name]Kittie[/name] [name]Belle[/name] (born 1882) – Ha! Super cute!

Memory [name]Jo[/name] (born 1920) – I know a girl named Memory and one named Rumor.

[name]Tressa[/name] (born 1905) – There was just a [name]Tressie[/name] in one of my kids yearbooks. Dislike

Gabbert (born 1909) – that made me giggle

Kipland (birth unknown, died 2005) – [name]Love[/name] [name]Kip[/name]

Othelda (middle name, born 1900) – eh I don’t like the sound

Brower (born 1892) – nms

i’m going to have to go look at that site. I love walking through graveyards too.
