Greer/Grier for a boy?

What do you think about [name_f]Greer[/name_f] for a boy? It seems to be used mostly for girls but probably still rare enough to be unisex.

Thanks for your opinions!

I have a cousin who is in his 30’s named [name_f]Greer[/name_f]. It feels very, very masculine to me.

Yes it feels very masculine to me too! I have never met a [name_f]Greer[/name_f] in real life so I don’t have a preconceived notion about what gender it fits better. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] for your input!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this name! The only [name_f]Grier[/name_f] I have known was a character from a show. I have it on my girls list but I never thought about it for a boy and, actually, I quite like it!

While I absolutely adore [name_f]Greer[/name_f], it’s all girl to me.

I think it works. It doesn’t sound feminine at all.

I have only ever heard of [name_f]Greer[/name_f] being used on girls and have never actually met one, but it seems to be very rarely used and does sound quite masculine. While some people might comment it’s not likely that he will be running into many girls with the same name.

I find the name really masculine so I approve! [name_f]Greer[/name_f]/[name_f]Grier[/name_f] for a boy would be great. If [name_u]James[/name_u] could be a girl name than [name_f]Greer[/name_f] can be unisex too.

I’m surprised nameberry only recognizes [name_f]Greer[/name_f] as a girls’ name; it seems very unisex to me!

[name_f]Greer[/name_f] sounds masculine to me, but nowadays it seems to be used almost exclusively for girls.

I’d suggest pairing it with a very boyish middle if you want to help avoid confusion/to give him an option for a amore masculine nickname down the road should [name_f]Greer[/name_f] continue to be used primarily for girls.

[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: also wanted to add that my (23 y.o.) male cousin is named [name_u]Kendall[/name_u]; most people assume he’s a girl before meeting him, but I don’t think it really causes him that many problems in day to day life. That’s just to say that with these unisex/shifting towards girls names, perhaps we shouldn’t worry so much about whether they seem masculine or feminine and more about whether we just like them.

To add to my first reply:

In 2016 98 girls were named [name_f]Greer[/name_f] and 18 boys.
In 2016 23 girls were named [name_f]Grier[/name_f] and 11 boys.

That’s a total of 150 people born in 2016 with the name. So, whatever gender you choose to use it on, it’s incredibly likely he/she will not meet another.

My youngest step brother also has a name that is unisex that is more commonly used for girls and I would say the same thing. [name_u]Day[/name_u] to day it’s less of a problem than some people imagine. It bothers him more in comparison with his brothers that he is the only one who has a unisex name, but his name has an important family meaning too that compensates for that. I also have a unisex name and quite often between the two of us it’s assumed I have his name and vice versa but again it’s not that big a deal. It doesn’t happen that often and people and places that know us just move on when they are told. I agree more that people should focus on whether they really love the name or not.

Cute! Definitely rare enough that it doesn’t matter. I’ve never met one, and, personally, I think it sounds very masculine.

It’s a tough one. I’ve only ever known one [name_f]Greer[/name_f] and she was a she but I remember thinking when I first met her “huh, [name_f]Greer[/name_f]. Great for a boy, too.” Could go either way, I reckon!

This one definitely sounds like a boy name to me. I know it’s frequently used on girls, but if you like it for a boy, I think it will work.

[name_f]Greer[/name_f] is all girl to me.

I have known two Greers–both women. I probably wouldn’t use it on a boy, but if i did, I would definitely go with the [name_f]Grier[/name_f] spelling.

The only [name_f]Greer[/name_f] I know of is a girl, though she’s just a character. Anyway, I think it could be unisex. I would avoid the [name_f]Grier[/name_f] spelling due to the [name_m]Nash[/name_m] [name_f]Grier[/name_f] controversy though.

I like it for a boy or for a girl. It is a solid name.

[name_u]LOVE[/name_u]! Also never heard of the name but still love!
