Grey for a girl?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] so my husband and I are expecting another girl soon and we [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. We like it more on a girl than a boy. We just are not sure if we should use just [name_u]Grey[/name_u] or [name_f]Gracen[/name_f] to make it more complete as a first name. I personally dislike [name_f]Gracen[/name_f] because of the [name_f]Grace[/name_f] part(really hate the name) but some say it would be best as a nickname. Also some say it won’t age well where as we think otherwise. Thoughts? Thank you!

I don’t think it works very well for a girl.

I like [name_u]Grey[/name_u] on a girl a lot!

I feel bad you hate my name though

I’m not too keen on it for a girl if it would be a full name, but as a nickname I could see it. I think [name_f]Gracen[/name_f] is a lovely way to get there but considering you don’t love it here are some alternatives:
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_u]Gradey[/name_u]
[name_f]Grania[/name_f]

Sorry! Someone really negative in my life was named [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Not a fan of any [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_u]Grady[/name_u], or [name_f]Grania[/name_f]. Someone suggested using it as her middle name and calling her that but if we want to call her [name_u]Grey[/name_u] then shouldn’t that be her first name?

I like [name_u]Grey[/name_u] on its own for a girl, very pretty and simple. Colors don’t have gender! It works!

I think you should totally use [name_u]Grey[/name_u]!

i knew a boy in primary school named gray — i can’t remember if it was short for anything — but, semi-famously, grey delisle (a woman!) does the voice of daphne blake on scooby doo  so maybe the ‘a’ is masculine and the ‘e’ is feminine, haha. if you adore grey, and don’t mind the lack of nickname (some people prefer that…i am not one of those people!!) then i say go for it! screw gendered names, it’s 2016.

in terms of the middle slot, my dad’s middle is jeffrey and has gone by jeff all his life. it’s doable, but he’s always hated that his first name is not a name that he likes or would ever use (his first name was chosen by his estranged father as an honor name for a non-family member, and he and his mother resent it).

one of pam satran’s comments about naming her daughter rory was that she wanted to give her a more classically feminine middle to compensate (that sounds awful, sorry pam!) for having a more unisex first name — so maybe something a little more frilly in the middle spot will ease the family tension? there’s a similar situation in my family right now…my cousin is pregnant with my grandmother’s first great-grandchild and my grandmother is very annoyed that my ‘niece’ will be named ezrah (i hate the ‘h’ but i would never say anything about it to my sweet cousin) because it’s a boy’s name. sigh. pick the name you love, my friend! haters gonna hate!

Colors are unisex and [name_u]Grey[/name_u] would make a lovely name for a girl! I am firmly in the camp of ‘name them what you’ll call them’.
I’m not as big a fan of [name_f]Gracen[/name_f] anyways; out loud it would be mistaken for [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] I’m sure.

I really don’t like it because it’s just so dismal. It makes me think of storm clouds, tornadoes, and bleak rainy mornings. Then again…if you guys really like it, I guess that is what matters. Best of luck.

Another vote for the positive side. I love [name_u]Gray[/name_u] or whatever spelling you choose.
A combo that stayed with me was one Name [name_u]Sage[/name_u] proposed for a couple and the last two names were ‘[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] Grae.’ Like most - alternative spellings are not my usual choice -but i thought ‘Grae’ looked very feminine and so just mentioned it. Again I would use it in any form and I think a lovely distinctive, if not frilly second name, would be ideal.

I’ve been considering [name_u]Grey[/name_u] for a middle name. It works for boys and girls and makes any name sound cool!

I personally prefer [name_u]Grey[/name_u] in the middle name slot or as a nickname, because as a first it sounds unfinished, but that is probably because the only [name_u]Gray[/name_u] I have known was a [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gray[/name_u] and I prefer fuller names that can be shortened.

One important thing (for me) when considering unisex names is the name of older and future children. If your older daughters name is feminine then a daughter with a unisex name maybe mistaken for a boy, especially if you have have future sons with names in a similar vein, e.g With siblings [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_u]River[/name_u] I would think [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is a boy (unless I’m being introduced to [name_u]Grey[/name_u] with bows in her hair and a pink frilly dress on!). However if your older daughter has a unisex name then I think [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is a good option.

Overall I think that if it is a name you love I say go for it, maybe with a more feminine middle to give your daughter options when she is older.

Thank you for all the comments. Our other children are [name_m]Knox[/name_m], [name_m]Dimitri[/name_m], and [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] (sometimes called [name_f]Addie[/name_f] or [name_u]Ren[/name_u]). We will look into some girly middle names.

I think that [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is unisex.

I think [name_u]Grey[/name_u] definitely works for a girl. Perhaps just consider having a very girlie/pretty sounding middle name to offer some contrast.

I’m having the same thoughts as @namergirl3. I can’t imagine looking at a beautiful baby girl and naming her after such a “dismal” color. It also does kind of seem unfinished to me, though I prefer longer names, as well.

I would probably guess that [name_m]Knox[/name_m], [name_m]Dmitri[/name_m] and [name_u]Grey[/name_u] were boys, and [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] was a girl. I fully believe in giving all children equal names. If one girl is [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f], it doesn’t seem like a good idea to me if her little sister is then named [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. It may spark some name envy - in either one of them!

I like it and think it works well as a standalone name for a girl. I think it sounds classy and unusual, but not weird. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it does seem a little too neutral next to your other children’s names, which are pretty clearly indicative of their gender. I wouldn’t be sure if [name_u]Grey[/name_u] was a boy or a girl just by hearing it, so that might be something to consider if that’s something that would bother you.

If someone thinks of grey as a dismal colour, that’s their perception. [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] means “blind” and [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] means “misshapen head”, but it doesn’t stop people from using them.

I think it’s fine for a girl, it just reminds me of [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] and [name_u]Lexie[/name_u] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] ([name_u]Grey[/name_u]'s Anatomy) and they’re both (obviously) females. It’s the only association I have, though. I don’t care for it personally, it reminds me of miserable weather, but yep, works for a girl.

I love [name_u]Grey[/name_u] for a boy only. It would be ok in the middle.
