Grey/Gray - aussie needs help

Hello,

Since we are Australian I am unsure of how to spell the name [name]Gray[/name]. I really love [name]Gray[/name] spelled like this but being Australian and using British English and all it’s spellings means that it is spelled [name]Grey[/name]. Which one would you use? any other Aussies who also have this problem?

thanks

If you really love [name]Gray[/name] then you should go for it. British English also uses the ‘honour’ spelling with a ‘u’, yet the [name]Honor[/name] spelling is higher in the [name]England[/name] and [name]Wales[/name] charts (#445) than the [name]Honour[/name] spelling (#2275). However, I’m personally very particular with BE spellings and if I met a [name]Grey[/name] or an [name]Honour[/name], I would assume their names were spelt that way, and if I was forced to name my son [name]Grey[/name] or [name]Gray[/name], I’d spell it ‘[name]Grey[/name]’. If you do use it, I’d be prepared to have to correct spellings over the years but I don’t think it’s too big an issue- the surname spelt ‘[name]Gray[/name]’ is fairly common here and, I assume, in Aus

My husband and I talked about this name and he said that regardless of how you spell the color [name]Gray[/name] is the right way to spell the name. I think because it has [name]Ray[/name] in it, and it just looks more like a name. So do what you want!

I’m Australian and I think you can use either. The colour is spelled grey in Australia, but you could spell the name either way. It’s just personal preference. I think [name]Gray[/name] looks nicer as a name myself.

I’m also Australian. Personally, I prefer the [name]Grey[/name] spelling if it’s going to be either a first and middle name - I know quite a few [name]Gray[/name] families. However, being a name and not a colour, I think you can get away with whichever spelling you prefer.

I prefer [name]Grey[/name] because I think that [name]Gray[/name] just looks a bit strange as I’m not used to it.

I am american and when it comes to the color I spell it [name]Gray[/name], but when it comes to using it as a name I prefer the spelling [name]Grey[/name]. I think when it comes to a name whichever spelling you prefer is fine.

I use spellings based on gender. I see [name]Grey[/name] as the spelling for a male and [name]Gray[/name] as the spelling for a female. That is just how I determine though. [name]Gray[/name] spelling seems more feminine to me vs. [name]Grey[/name].
