Griffin or Gryphon?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Nameberries,

What is your opinion on [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] vs [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m]?

[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m]? The same way as [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]?

Thanks for your feedback!

Probably [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. I would pronounce [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] the same, but it looks off to me.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] for sure.
[name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] would sound the same, but has a weird vibe.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m], definitely. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!

The pronouncation of [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] confuses me a bit. I would almost be tempted to say gr-EYE-fon (actually… I would still use 2 syllables, so more like grEYE-fon).

I prefer [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] says “trying too hard.”

Between the two I prefer [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], but I also like [name_m]Griffon[/name_m].

[name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] looks made up. I would pronounce it more [name_m]Griff[/name_m]-ONN rather than [name_m]Griff[/name_m]-INN

I have a strong preference for Griffin.

I’m tempted to say “griff-AWN” for Gryphon, but would probably pronounce it the same as Griffin. Made me think of Gryffindor house in Harry Potter (which I misspelled in my original comment).

I would pronounce them the same, unless I were trying to explain the difference to someone (in which case, I’d use an artificially careful pronunciation and say gri-[name_u]FINN[/name_u] or gri-FONN).
I think [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is the more recognisable and intuitive spelling for the name. While I am familiar with the spelling gryphon for the mythical animal, I would probably assume the [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] spelling if I heard it as a name.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. For me, [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] would be either GRY-fon or [name_m]GRIFF[/name_m]-on, losing the -in sound in both cases. It also reminds me of the hockey brand (sports equipment). It could work, but [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] says “Name” to me all the way and [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] doesn’t really.

I absolutely love the [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] spelling! It looks so much more magical and mystical. I’ll admit it would probably have more spelling and possibly pronunciation problems, but I just adore how it looks! I say [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] the same way.

Definitely [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] or [name_m]Griffon[/name_m] over [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m]. I pronounce them slightly differently -> [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as ‘griff-in’ and [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] as ‘griff-uhn’.

I would pronounce them slightly different. I much prefer [name_m]Griffin[/name_m].

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] all the way! It’s more intuitive for others and you get the bonus of cool nicknames [name_m]Griff[/name_m] and [name_m]Fin[/name_m].

I like both but prefer [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] better, and would pronounce it [name_m]Griff[/name_m]-in and [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] as [name_m]Griff[/name_m]-un

I just don’t like how [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] looks written down, it looks to me too much like a technical name for a creature, rather than a name - like calling someone Minotaur.

[name_f]IMO[/name_f] the y next to the ph looks too crowded and unbalanced and not as pleasantly Welsh and gruff as [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]

Thanks everyone for their honest feedback! That was very helpful!
