Lately I’ve been getting into the name [name]Giana[/name] after playing the new [name]Giana[/name] Sisters game. I know, why not [name]Gianna[/name] instead? Well, to me the extra n seems unnecessary… that and [name]Giana[/name] is much lower on the popularity charts. (it is ranked at 569, while [name]Gianna[/name] is up at 63) Which reminds me, what are your thoughts on [name]Giana[/name]? Would the one n variation be confusing for some people? Also, what middle name would you pair with [name]Giana[/name]?
I really like [name]Giana[/name] as well, I kinda of prefer [name]Gianna[/name] though. [name]Giana[/name] is took close to [name]Diana[/name].
I don’t think the one n will be a problem, I fail to think of any reason why it would be!

I prefer the [name]Gianna[/name] spelling, but either way is good. They’re said the same way – close to john-ah in Italian and gee-ah-nah in English – and I love it! i’d like to know which way you’re saying it

I love it! And the spelling doesn’t make a difference to me.
I like the [name]Gianna[/name] spelling much better, because it’s the original Italian spelling.
I think [name]Giana[/name] ruins the Italian ‘flavour’ of the name, because [name]Giana[/name] and [name]Gianna[/name] would be pronounced slightly differently in Italian.
The ‘correct’ Italian pronunciation is something like [name]JAHN[/name]-nuh (although the ‘[name]JAHN[/name]’ has a shortish ‘[name]AH[/name]’ sound, if that makes any sense). I think [name]JOHN[/name]-uh sounds awful, and the three-syllable JEE-ah-nah is not quite right, either.
I think taking out the extra n is completely unnecessary and will just lead to confusion- the pronunciation is the exact same, so one being “less popular” doesn’t really mean anything for the name. [name]Giana[/name] and [name]Gianna[/name] will still get confused when someone shouts their name, but [name]Giana[/name] will have to explain that it’s one n to everyone she meets.
Jeska’s right- when said correctly, it’s sort of pronounced JYAH-na, like the i and a sounds are squished together. If you’ve ever heard [name]Giada[/name] De Laurentiis pronounce her first name, it’s the same thing but with an n instead of a d.
This name is quite common where I live among “guido” families- pseudo-Italians whose parents and grandparents were born in this country but want to honor an Italian heritage. The more recent Italian families tend to go for other names like [name]Chiara[/name], [name]Giovanna[/name], [name]Maria[/name], and [name]Sabrina[/name]. [name]Gianna[/name] is a perfectly fine name, but for me it has that image attached to it.
