Now, before you go sll bonkers on me, saying that girls steal all the boy names, I’m not saying [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] should become a girl name. Im saying I would like to use the spelling [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] for a girl one day.
Currently I use it for a character who is a female, twin sister of [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. Which brings upsome points
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is unisex. Why would the name of a mythical creature be only for boys?
It sounds pretty similar to [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f], which is a girl name.
So once agin, I’m not saying that girls should steal the name, I just don’t see what’s wrong if they occasionally used it.
Can anybody explain why peopls freak out on me when I bring this up?
Well , honestly I don’t really know . [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] is not my cup of tea but I can see it on a girl . I see on IG people named their daughters masculine name all the time . So far I have see girl [name_m]Aries[/name_m] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u] . I think we make a big deal out of nothing .
As for [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] I think its a really COOL name . Although personally I love it on a boy due to the [name_u]River[/name_u] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] connection I can’t see why it can’t used on girls . As you say its a mythological creature after all .
Honestly in my opinion, I think it’s because [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] (or [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] as you spelled it) sounds masculine to most ears, my own included. I wouldn’t use it for a girl myself (I wouldn’t use [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] either though as it sounds masculine to me as well) but if you love [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] for a girl, use it. I don’t necessarily think it sounds like [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] but again that’s me.
I think people get twitchy about boys names being used for girls because the same standard doesn’t apply to girls names used for boys. A boy named [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] would get ridiculed.
I’m a huge fan of unisex and boys names on girls. So I have gotten the same reaction to some of my top names as you have.
As far as [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m], I’m in love! It’s absolutely adorable as a girls name! I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is totally usable as well. The only person named [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] I’ve ever met was a girl so…
Loving your naming style!
I don’t see a problem with [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] for a girl. Sure, even to me it sounds all boy, but I cannot pass judgement based on my opinion of a girl [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m]. I happen to like [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Peri[/name_u], [name_f]Brighton[/name_f], [name_m]Chance[/name_m], [name_u]Channing[/name_u], and [name_u]Holland[/name_u] and [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] for girls, so go with whatever you like.
I would only suggest pairing [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] with a slightly more unisex or softer vibe for a middle name. Something like [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] or [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] [name_f]Odelle[/name_f].
I don’t mind boy names on girls, necessarily. [name_f]My[/name_f] current name crush for a girl is [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]. But [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] to me sounds like “gruff” which just sounds totally manly to me. That’s why I like it, because it sounds so handsome. I agree with the PP though; if you want to use it, pair it with a feminine middle.
The difference between [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] & [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]? Maybe because gryphons are ugly creatures while a phoenix is beautiful? [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is a gorgeous name with a gorgeous meaning that I love for either gender. I find the sound of [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] (and [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]) unattractive so I don’t like it on any child. And if I met two sisters named [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] & [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], I’d think poor [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] got shortchanged
I just really dislike boys names in girls. I know a lot of people think they are “cool” or unique, but I find them cringe worthy. Plus, I find it ugly to hear when I see an adorable little girl with a boys name.
I have nothing against ‘boy’ names on girls. That opinion has only grown out of experience, having a 16mo old means I meet a lot of little ones and the first time I met [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] the girl, I was aghast. But then I thought ‘Hey, she suits it! Why not? Why can’t girls be hunters?’. Now I know girls named [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. Not a choice I’d make myself, but I do get and appreciate it.
But [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] spelled that way would irk me. The ‘y’ is unnecessary. Either use [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] or [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] and own it.
[name_f]My[/name_f] earliest exposure to the name was the love interest of [name_f]Neve[/name_f] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] on Party of 5, so it’s been a ‘boy’ name to me and is actually one of my very favourites, but any name is fair game. [name_f]My[/name_f] only pet peeve is using a very common boy name on a girl, that’s a bit cruel since she’d be surrounded by boy <name>s. Actually, I don’t like using any super common names at all, boy or girl.
You can’t just misspell a boy name to make it a girl name…you just end up with a misspelled name. If you’re set on using [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]/[name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] for a girl, I hope you’ll at least put it in the middle spot, but don’t misspell it. It just adds ignorance to the crime of poor judgment. People get upset because the word is so rough and unpleasant to begin with…most prefer pretty, pleasant names for girls.
So most people agree [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] is not the best name for a girl. I’m fine with that. If I ever actually have kids, I’ll be much older and my taste may be better. But it can still work for a character, yes?
I think it would work on a girl. The male names I don’t like on girls tend to be more traditional. [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] or [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] probably won’t work well. [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is not nearly as difficult to imagine.
I don’t see why it can’t work for a girl, but I’m in the slim percentage of berries who actually like some girls names on boys and some boy names on girls. Personally I consider [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] to be completely unisex. If I was going to use [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m]/[name_m]Griffin[/name_m], I’d probably use it for a boy but I wouldn’t be aghast to see it on a girl either.
So, yeah, I think [name_m]Gryffin[/name_m] still works for your female character.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is all boy to me. Use [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is you want a girl’s name. I like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] for a boy. It’s not my style but I could get on board with [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as a girl’s name, but only spelled like that. Subbing a y does not make a name more feminine!
