Astrid evokes images of lightning flashes, rocky sea travels, and dramatic foghorn Norse legends. More generally, it’s just so spiky and “astral,” it’s a self-assured, plucky, and “straight-shooter” kind of name. Vague associations with The Office emerge after all of this epic imagery for me, but I don’t think the show’s joke renders Astrid forever unusable. Kids will find any name to twist. Sure, Astrid may get that dreaded Office joke, but the joke will either grow old or she’ll learn to own it. Regardless, I don’t think it’ll subject her to a life of torment.
Absolutely love [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]! [name_u]Strong[/name_u], sleek and starry.
The Office is quite old now and, though still popular, I don’t think it would be an immediate association for many people. Plus [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is getting more popular and familiar so the “joke” of it being a really out there name that [name_u]Michael[/name_u] couldn’t remember properly doesn’t really feel that relevant any more.
I like [name_f]Tess[/name_f] as a stretchy single-syllable nickname for [name_f]Astrid[/name_f].
Yes, BUT, only because just about everyone in my inner circle is a big fan of the show. Until meeting S/O, I never would have known.
I think Astrid would work fine, as @Katinka said, the show is somewhat older and the whole joke was that it was a really out there name, which is no longer the case.
I knew an [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] growing up and I don’t remember people making fun of her name in the same way as in The Office - it was just a really unusual name where I lived and people found it weird. I have no idea how likely it would be to be made fun of in any way. [name_f]My[/name_f] understanding from a couple of sources is that kids are less likely to make fun of people’s names than they were a generation ago, but I imagine your mileage there may vary.
I love it too! I read White [name_u]Oleander[/name_u] years ago and that’s when I fell in love with the name. I think it’s stunning.
I love Astrid! It’s on my list, along with Aspen. But I do think your concerns are somewhat relevent , at least for adults/people that have seen the office. However, The Office is getting older, so todays generation may not be as aware of the show.
I really don’t think this association is bad enough to prevent you from using Astrid. It is a beautiful, feminine name that also has strength. It has a beautiful image it provokes and like I said, it’s on my list.
One syllable nickname: Tris
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]: I think it is a spacey and magical name. I for one would not tease my friend I would be jeaulous. [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] name! I do not associate it with the office (Having never watched it but every name is bound to a bit of teasing even the most simplest names thats just kids being kids)
Definitely don’t think an [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] would encounter bullying. I know of a few, young and old, and I would be extremely surprised to hear that they’d experienced any bullying. It’s a beautiful name!
I’ve never watched The Office so I don’t associate it with that. If anything, I associate it with the novel/film White [name_u]Oleander[/name_u].
Nickname-wise, I think finding a one syllable one is difficult; two syllable ones like [name_u]Asta[/name_u] and [name_f]Asti[/name_f] work though. In saying that, I don’t think it needs a nickname.
I agree! I totally associate it with that episode, but it wouldn’t be a big enough issue for me to not use it if I liked it a lot! And, it sounds like you really do like it!
