While I don’t have a guilty pleasure list for girls, I do have one for boys. Maybe it’s because I’m caught up in brave girl’s names, or that I tend towards ‘normal’ ones; or maybe I just think that awesome little boys need awesome names. Like,
Dragon – Becuase DRAGON.
[name]Jade[/name] – [name]Green[/name] is not a girl’s color. Rocks are not girly. [name]Jade[/name] is not inherently feminine in the sound. This should not be a problem.
[name]Royal[/name] – It just sounds GOOD. And it’s pretentious. And I like that.
[name]Onyx[/name] – [name]Onyx[/name] is [name]BLACK[/name]. And [name]SHINY[/name].
[name]Lucifer[/name] – The dark side has cookies. Yes, that is my entire argument.
[name]Amber[/name] – Not a girl color. According to Jurassic [name]Park[/name], may contain dinosaur DNA.
[name]Rebel[/name] – I don’t care if I’m asking for it. This is cool.
Optimus Prime – We could call him [name]TIMMY[/name]!
Is there anything glaringly WRONG with these? Aside from the whole ‘I can’t take a guy named Dragon seriously’ thing. Until vetoed by hypothetical father, I intend to keep them on the table.
And also, suggestions for names that I’d think are AWESOME but probably never use?
Dragon – the child would be a joke, if you wanna push boundaries try [name]Draco[/name].
[name]Jade[/name] – its a girl name, too many girl connotations.
[name]Royal[/name] – its like [name]Diamond[/name] or [name]Princess[/name] or [name]Experience[/name] are for girls - trying too hard to elevate you child’s status or future somehow by a name. [name]Onyx[/name] – only viable option, new and fresh, not used or completely trendified by Hollywood.
[name]Lucifer[/name] – lovely as God’s favorite angel. but he gave all that up because he was selfish, the child would be a joke. try [name]Lucien[/name].
[name]Amber[/name] – definitely a girl color, definitely a girl name.
[name]Rebel[/name] – trendy Hollywood wannabe.
Optimus Prime – the child would be a [name]MAJOR[/name] joke. even Optimus would not approve.
Dragon – Becuase DRAGON. I dould not do it, but I would applaud anyone who would
[name]Jade[/name] – [name]Even[/name] so kid would be teased and mistaken for a girl.
[name]Royal[/name] --I think aside from the whole Royalty thing, I think [name]Royal[/name] [name]Oaks[/name] Charcoal, sorry
[name]Onyx[/name] --I like it!
[name]Lucifer[/name] – I cannot go there, sorry even with cookies
[name]Amber[/name] – Too set as a girl name
[name]Rebel[/name] – I like this too.
Optimus Prime – I could not go there.! [name]Imagine[/name] Optimus Prime on a job application.
Annicus! [name]One[/name] of my daughters friends just named her son this and is taking a lot of flak for it, but I really like it.
I actually don’t really have a problem with much of anything on your list
Dragon – This is one I don’t like. I know you don’t want to hear it, but I wouldn’t take him seriously. [name]Drake[/name], [name]Draco[/name]…I know a Drakken (drake-en)
[name]Jade[/name] – I have absolutely no problem with this. I know a male [name]Jade[/name] and he’s perfectly well adjusted and never gets flack for his name. There was also a male [name]Jade[/name] on So You Think You Can Dance this year. Plus, [name]Jay[/name] for a nickname if it’s too much for him
[name]Royal[/name] – I actually know a [name]Royal[/name]. His sister’s [name]Penny[/name]. I don’t personally like these sorts of names, but I don’t think there’s a problem with it. He goes by [name]Ro[/name] (row) sometimes
[name]Onyx[/name] – Again, not my type, but there’s nothing wrong with it. If people can use [name]Gray[/name], blue etc, there’s no reason you can’t use [name]Onyx[/name]. [name]Nyx[/name] is a fine nn too
[name]Lucifer[/name] – I know one of these too and have talked about him on the boards. His father is Luciferian and used it to honor his god. Honestly, he’s gotten some problems, but no rude comments. He more gets “oh…interesting…” or the squinty eyed weird looks. [name]Lucifer[/name] likes his name though, and he doesn’t use a nickname. [name]Lucifer[/name] has a great sound and a beautiful meaning.
[name]Amber[/name] – My sister’s [name]Amber[/name] so all I think is ‘girl’ but it’s a color and has no gender. You could conceivably get [name]Bear[/name] as a nn, which is awesome.
[name]Rebel[/name] – You are asking for it I don’t like it and I would probably go home and talk about his name, but other than asking for trouble, there’s nothing wrong with it
Optimus Prime – No this one is the worst on this list, sorry. It’s terrible together. Optimus by itself would be cool, together it’s like a joke, sorry
I think you’d like:
Obsidian
[name]Peregrine[/name]
Larkspur
Spyridon – means ‘spirit’
[name]Noble[/name] – goes right in there with [name]Royal[/name]. I know one of these too. His siblings are [name]Loyal[/name] (B), [name]Sage[/name] (b), and [name]Whimsy[/name]. It’s all too much for me together, but you might like them
[name]Winsome[/name] – I recently met a [name]Winsome[/name]. It think it’s awesome. [name]Winsome[/name] means “attractive or appealing in appearance or character; charming”
Aero – like [name]Arrow[/name]. It’s a shade of blue
Pendragon – I know, I said I couldn’t take dragon seriously, but this is for you and I honestly like it better. It’s [name]Arthur[/name]'s last name ([name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name])
[name]Faustus[/name] – I adore this name even though the play is dark
[name]Frost[/name] – I just like it. I used it in a story because I don’t like it on my own kid
[name]Osiris[/name] – a god of the dead in Egyptian mythology, just a cool sound
[name]Aristotle[/name] – You like pretentious, this is pretentious but it’s cool and has great associations
Voltaire – see above
[name]Marquis[/name] – like [name]Royal[/name]. I think it has a neat sound and it’s a character in a [name]Neil[/name] Gaiman book so that’s a + for me
[name]Wilder[/name] – much like [name]Rebel[/name]. You’re asking for it, but it’s cool. I know 2 actually, a musician and a cop
[name]Draven[/name] – because The [name]Crow[/name]
[name]Craven[/name] – just cause it sounds cool
Dragon --I have a friend of Chinese descent who is 100% committed to naming his son [name]Long[/name] Wang, which means “Dragon [name]King[/name]”. I’d say go for it, although I do prefer [name]Drake[/name].
[name]Jade[/name] – My favorite character from the video game Tales of the Abyss is male and named [name]Jade[/name], so I consider this a good boy’s name, as well.
[name]Royal[/name] – Most certainly pretentious, as you said. I wonder if he would end up being ironically humble.
[name]Onyx[/name] – I like this one as well.
[name]Lucifer[/name] – [name]Lucifer[/name] was given his name while a good guy, so whatever. There are plenty of variations people use without consequence, I think this should go into rotation, too.
[name]Amber[/name] – I still think of a girl, and an air-headed girl in particular.
[name]Rebel[/name] – Maybe try [name]Maverick[/name] for a slightly more acceptable alternative with a similar meaning.
Optimus Prime – Of course.
I actually love [name]Jade[/name] for a boy. [name]Rebel[/name], [name]Onyx[/name], [name]Royal[/name], and Dragon would work in the middle, but there’s waaay too much potential for unfortunate irony when used as firsts.
[name]Jade[/name]- I have heard of many male [name]Jade[/name]'s over the years and as my sister’s middle name, its on my middle name list as a unisex name.
Dragon- So cool and My friend’s Boyfriend is called Dragan- he is from Croatia. I would pick Pendragon.
Optimus Prime- Made more brilliant by the fact you have thought of a ‘normal’ nick name.
[name]Lucifer[/name]- i dont think its a bad idea because of any religious reason i just dont like names that sound like lucy, but its not my child. I would pick Calcifer.
[name]Rebel[/name] & [name]Onyx[/name] are great names for boys or girls, I dont care about conforming to gender norms. I want to call my little girl Nigh, a word name that sounds like the welsh boys name [name]Nye[/name] short for [name]Aneurin[/name]. Short sweet and meaning ‘Near’ & ‘Close’
[name]Love[/name] your list
There is no such thing as a “girl colour” or a “boy colour” and gender roles are entirely a societal concept and easy to ignore. Please don’t name your son female names because of this strange idea of gendered colours.
[name]Lucifer[/name] is the name of Satan and as such, will set your child up as evil and anti-Christianty. Which is not so fine for school since it will paint a target on his back. Memes will not protect him from schoolyard arguments and teasings. Try [name]Lucien[/name] or [name]Lucius[/name].
[name]Onyx[/name] and [name]Royal[/name] are nice.
No comment on Dragon (try [name]Draco[/name] or Drogon), [name]Rebel[/name], or Optimus Prime. Although I disapprove.
Dragon—Would be kind of a joke.
[name]Jade[/name]–Sounds a little girly.
[name]Royal[/name]–Not okay
[name]Onyx[/name]–Not bad, but I wouldnt go for it. [name]Lucifer[/name]--Sounds like a name for your dog. [name]Amber[/name]--Totally a girls name.
[name]Rebel[/name]–Sounds like trouble
Optimus Prime–Seriously?? I mean…SERIOUSLY???
