Guirec

I heard this name on the naming podcast I posted about the other day, Histoires des prénoms. Someone said it as their suggestion to anyone currently thinking about baby names. They said it was a rare [name_m]Breton[/name_m] name that didn’t work with their other choices but that’s about all they said. I’m intrigued. I’ve always liked [name_m]Guy[/name_m] and [name_m]Gui[/name_m], and have a soft-spot for [name_m]Greg[/name_m], too.

I’m not finding solid sourcing for the etymology other than seeing it is [name_m]Breton[/name_m] of Celtic origin. One site said it’s [name_m]Breton[/name_m] means amber. Another said it’s related to the Latin [name_m]Justus[/name_m]. Another said it’s a form of Gireg, but I came up short there, too. If anybody has some more clear info, I’m just interested.

Either way, what do you think of Guirec (GHEE-reck)? What vibes does it give off?

I am intrigued by this name! I think it would be hard to pull off as a first without family connections to Brittany/France, but could possibly hidden in the middle name spot.

I think there is an explorer with this name.

It’s intriguing. It sounds medieval. The kind of name you expect to find in a novel. I quite like it. It reminds me of names like [name_m]Arnau[/name_m], [name_m]Guillem[/name_m], Gerau…

Looking at Guirec, I agree with @UnderTheRainbow about the medieval vibe. When I say it (probably especially since I don’t speak French), my first thought is “Oo this could be an alternative to Eric!” I also wondered whether it could be related to [name_m]Garrick[/name_m]. Looks like probably not, but those were my thoughts.

I would pronounce this Guy-Rick which I think has a nice sound. Very unique but doesn’t sound made-up. Something very familiar about it.
