Gus - Standalone or Nickname?

Thoughts on [name_m]Gus[/name_m] as a standalone name? Vibe, impressions? Hate it, tolerate it, adore it?

[name_f][/name_f]

I like that it’s sweet and simple, and the clunky vintage vibe feels sort of similar to our other boys (W-a-r-r-e-n and C-l-y-d-e).

[name_f][/name_f]

However, we did consider [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] as a middle or first for our last boy. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] does flow well with our surname. It feels a bit fussy next to our other boys’ names, though.

[name_f][/name_f]

Would it be better to use [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] as a formal name and [name_m]Gus[/name_m] as a nickname? Would it be unnecessary confusion if we intended to primarily cause him [name_m]Gus[/name_m]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] would we appreciate having the option of shouting out AUGUSTINE when he was in trouble? :joy:

Not currently pregnant, just trying for number 3 and obsessed with names.

I personally think [name_m]Gus[/name_m] works better as a nickname. You could do [name_m]August[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] for a first maybe or [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] as the middle?

I am a massive fan of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], so I personally would opt for [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] nn [name_m]Gus[/name_m], but I think I like the simplicity of just [name_m]Gus[/name_m] with your older boys? [name_f][/name_f] Like you say, the style suits W@rren and Clyd3, and I agree that [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] feels a bit long and fussy next to them. [name_f][/name_f] If your current boys don’t really get nicknames… [name_f][/name_f] then I would probably suggest just [name_m]Gus[/name_m] for you (which is sort of breaking my heart, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] nn [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] is so high on my list!). [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_m]Gus[/name_m] feels perfect for you imo?

[name_f][/name_f]

Good luck!

I’ll probably be in the minority, but I like it as a standalone. It’s what my parents were going to name me if I were a boy, so I’ve always been attached to it [name_f][/name_f] I think it’s like nerdy cool.

I have an [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] nn [name_m]Gus[/name_m]! I appreciate having a longer name, and though we intended to use [name_m]Gus[/name_m] more often, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] ended up being extremely wearable (maybe bc of all the -son names these days? [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_m]Carson[/name_m], etc). I’d say we use them about 50/50.
[name_f][/name_f]How are you pronouncing [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]? In my experience, a pronounciation of AW-gus-teen is more likely to generate [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] as a nickname. We use the traditional pronunciation a-GUS-tin, which we’ve found makes the [name_m]Gus[/name_m] nn an easier connection.
[name_f][/name_f]I also like the longer name bc standalone [name_m]Gus[/name_m] is a stylistic choice with no flexibility. If my [name_m]Gus[/name_m] decides he feels more like a [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] (or an [name_m]August[/name_m] or Auggie), he has that room to choose a variation.

[name_m]Gus[/name_m] is so cute as a standalone name! I prefer [name_m]August[/name_m] as a full name without a nickname, but [name_m]Gus[/name_m] is adorable for that too. [name_m]August[/name_m] in full is just my preference. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is also very cute. I love this name on practically any form, and I really don’t think you can go wrong. [name_m]August[/name_m] just happens to be my favorite!

I personally know two kids who use [name_m]Gus[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]One is his whole name and one a nn for [name_m]Angus[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]I remember thinking originally it was odd as a stand alone name, but ow it seems totally fine, [name_f][/name_f] as always you get used to it when it’s associated with an actual person. I personally find [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] quite a lengthy kind of fussy name for a child, I’d expect to see it on a pope or something.. but
[name_f][/name_f]If you love it, that’s all that matters.

[name_m]August[/name_m] would be my preference, both in general as a long form for [name_m]Gus[/name_m], but also with your boys names! I also think [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] would be sweet! However, since you didn’t mention them, I’ll assume you’ve already considered them and they didn’t feel right!

[name_f][/name_f]

in that case, I’d vote for just [name_m]Gus[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Gus[/name_m] works perfectly fine as a standalone name, it doesn’t feel like a “nickname name” to me! I don’t think many people would question a “just” [name_m]Gus[/name_m]! [name_m]Gus[/name_m] is sweet, warm, friendly, cuddly, a bit quirky, just adorable!

[name_f][/name_f]

I actually think W@rren, Clyd3, & [name_m]Gus[/name_m] would be just the sweetest[name_f][/name_f]! The sibset brings me great imagery too. While I of course don’t know what your current boys are like, so sorry if this is totally off the mark! :joy:
[name_f][/name_f]I picture three little brothers, sweet as can be who love riding their bikes together, and jumping in big rain puddles. they enjoy painting and coloring, and cuddling with their favorite teddy bears and their favorite books. they’re also very adventurous, and could run around for hours letting their imagination run wild [name_f][/name_f]- and all three will excitedly tell you about every adventure they’ve been on together so far repeatedly. one day they’re pirates sailing the open seas, the next race car drivers speeding around the backyard, or maybe flying high on dragonback. they are kind to everyone they meet, and especially loving to each animal they come across. they are sweet, gentle, empathetic, passionate, and they have a bit of playful mischief in them. they’re both soft yet strong, and the cutest trio of brothers around!

I like Gus! Simple yet substantial; cosy and rugged at the same time! I’ve known a “just” Gus who wore it well.

I think I prefer just Gus for you - W-, C-, and Gus feel great together

I prefer “just” [name_m]Gus[/name_m] to any of the longer versions. And I generally prefer naming people the preferred name instead of just giving a formal name that will never be used just to have one.
[name_f][/name_f]I also agree [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] would sound a little out of place next to his brothers’ names.
[name_f][/name_f]Good luck!

I think it could work on its own but personally i prefer it as a nickname for [name_m]August[/name_m] or [name_m]Octavius[/name_m]

[name_f]Love[/name_f] his name! Now that you mention it, it would be more likely pronounced “aw-gust-teen” [name_m]Auggie[/name_m] than the “Gus-tin” pronunciation where we live.

This was such a sweet description. :face_holding_back_tears::smiling_face_with_tear:

I think [name_m]Angus[/name_m] or [name_m]August[/name_m] would be better with your other boys’ names instead of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. [name_m]Or[/name_m] even [name_m]Fergus[/name_m]. Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with using just [name_m]Gus[/name_m]. It’s super cute!

I think with your first two, Fergus nn Gus would suit best. Then all three have friendly, gentlemanly and not super common names. Plus I don’t love two x one syllable names in a row - Clyde and Gus sound a bit stark together.

I can see it as either to be honest!
