I’m not a huge fan of -lyn names personally, so [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] appeals to me a lot more. I’m not familiar with its origins though so I can’t really comment on that. It’s a beautiful name though and [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] is sweet.
Definitely -len. I don’t like how [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] looks like so many other trendy -lyn names, despite having more “organic” origins.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is gorgeous, and I adore [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]!
If I remember correctly, [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] would be more proper because the name is Welsh and most female names get the -en ending and males get the -yn ending. If I were to give this name to my child, I’d use the [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] spelling, though, because I feel like it would be less of a headache since most people are more familiar with the -lyn spelling.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is one of my absolute favourites!!
The -lyn diminishes it a little, for me. Makes a gorgeous, unique name feel trendy, like it’s trying to keep up with [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] etc.
Either way, nn [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] is just delicious.
I used to love [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] but I’ve since changed to [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] and I think it’s more timeless and elegant.
While [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is more timeless, I prefer the look of [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] (my preferred nickname for [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]) is more obvious with the [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] spelling.
My mother is [name_f]Gwendolene[/name_f] on her birth certificate. However, she always used [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f]. So there are alternative spellings to consider. I must admit, I am not a fan of the name [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] in any of its spellings for personal reasons.
I voted [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], but I like both.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], for me.
The -lyn, even though it’s less so for [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] really, makes for a trendy sounding name, due to the many -lyn ending names these days.
As others have stated [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] feels more timeless where the [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] spelling runs the risk of dating the name on paper. If you like trendy then the -lyn might be the way you want to go, but [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] just looks more classic.
A lot of people like to say that [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is the original spelling, so well done for picking up on the fact that they all evolved relatively simultaneously from Gwendoloena! [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is more correctly Welsh, but the earliest modern girls to be given the name were English as far as I know, and I think [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f] was the most popular spelling at first.
So there isn’t really a most “proper” spelling out of the three - you can definitely go with what you prefer. Personally, I like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] best, as the spelling looks more streamlined and cleaner to the eye, but they’re all lovely.
