Gyldan

Any opinions on the name Gyldan [name]Violet[/name] (pronounced gil-dun) for a girl? I have never heard the name before, it just popped into my head, and I loved the sound of it. Any thoughts?

I’ve never heard the name before either! To my ears, it sounds pretty masculine. I could see the name on a rough and tumble little boy, but not really on a sweet girl.

Gyldan reminds me of the name Gilda/Gylda with an “n” at the end. Gyldan is Old English and means “gold/golden or gilded”. It may be related to Old Norse “Gylla” as well. It’s certainly rare and unusual. The only issue: it may blend in with all of the other names ending in a similar fashion (Jayden, Kaylin, Rylan, Katelyn, Ashlyn, Hayden, Teagan etc…).After awhile, all of the names start to blur together. I love the vintage Violet but Gyldan Violet sounds more like a description than a person’s name (eg, gilded violet). But If you like it, that’s what matters.

Sounds like a name from the HBO series Game of Thrones. Not a fan, personally.

no…its awful…

I think that it is better for a boy, but I like it. I would only ever use it for a mn for a girl. It just sounds too masculine to me in a first place spot for a little girl. Maybe if you used an alternate spelling , like gylden? I think that pronouncing the last syllable den instead of dan makes it softer and more feminine!

I agree with mischa, at first I thought it was in the [name]Gilda[/name] family, or maybe a feminized version of [name]Golden[/name]. I’m not really a fan though, i looks really strange to me.

Sounds far too masculine for a girl.

I agree with freehal that the spelling Gylden looks more feminine. It would be cute for a boy, but I would change the y to i. Gildan?
