We’re in a rut. We had decided on [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] for our daughter, but my husband has been having some reservations. The three names in debate are:
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - The first name we had chosen for our daughter. There’s no real significance behind it other than I think the letter W is fun & that the name is spunky but still solid & unique.
[name_u]Scout[/name_u] - The name we are sad about not using. It’s my husbands favorite name by far. Sounds really cute with our daughter [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I’d want to keep it in the middle spot for professional reasons as an adult, but she’d be called [name_u]Scout[/name_u] if we use it.
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u] - The honorary name we wanted to use. It comes from my husbands first name, Joaquinn. Our oldest daughter has an honorary name as well so we like the tradition of that.
We’ve come up with all sorts of combinations. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] (no scout)
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] (no honor name)
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] (not quite the best flow)
Nothing is making us fully satisfied. Can anyone think of something maybe we overlooked? Any input on what to do when stuck between three names but only wanting to use two? We’ve been suggested by family to use [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or [name_f]Sarita[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and call her [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a nickname, which we think is really cute, but don’t like either of those first names.
[name_f]Winslet[/name_f] nn [name_u]Scout[/name_u] is it a bit of a stretch??
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] has the same kind of sound whilst still beginning with a W.
[name_f]Dinah[/name_f] has the same meaning as [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m]; variants of [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] include [name_f]Dina[/name_f], [name_f]Deena[/name_f], and the international variant [name_f]Dine[/name_f].
Girls names beginning with the same Wa- sound as [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] include [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] and [name_f]Wanda[/name_f].
[name_f]Willamine[/name_f]/[name_f]Wilhelmine[/name_f], both begin with the W- sound in [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] and end with the -een.
[name_u]Scout[/name_u] really could be a nickname for any name, and would work especially well if there aren’t any nicknames for [name_f]Willa[/name_f] that you’re too keen on.
I still like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] best for you. Great with [name_u]Piper[/name_u], and includes [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as honour name. I like [name_u]Scout[/name_u] too, and [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] works well - but [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] just is so smart, quirky and sweet, and includes the family reference like her sister, all at once!
You can definitely still call her [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. To me it’s just a generic nickname like [name_m]Buddy[/name_m], [name_m]Bubba[/name_m], [name_m]Son[/name_m], [name_f]Honey[/name_f], Sport, etc.
I agree. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] called [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a pet name makes total sense to me, even though there’s no sound link (hey, [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_u]Finch[/name_u]’s full name is [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]!)
Otherwise, I like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a combo just as much as [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. Both are absolutely full of pep and fun, but feel solid enough to work for a lifetime, and both work beautifully with [name_u]Piper[/name_u]’s name.
I guess you just have to decide whether using your ultimate favourite or including your honour name is more important to you. Flow isn’t everything of course, but [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] doesn’t roll off the tongue in the same way as your other options, so I think your best bet is to go with your heart and pick one as a middle for the wonderful [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. Which one speaks to you more for this baby girl?
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] are beautiful! I think that they are both lovely in different ways, and they fit in with [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] perfectly. I slightly prefer the flow of [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u], but really both are stunning, and I love the connection to family that [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] has. You can’t lose either way!
Congrats, and hope you settle on a name you adore!
From this list I’d bring [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] , [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] , [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]/[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] if you don’t want another P name.
I can actually relate to your conundrum as we are somewhat in a similar situation naming this baby boy, stuck between three options we are attached to for different reasons, and so it looks like something is gonna end up falling by the wayside.
Here are my thoughts for you:
Use two middle names. Problem solved.
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] has the most intuitive flow to me.
We give two middle names, so it’s a viable option in my book!
As others have suggested, go with [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] nn [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. I agree that [name_u]Scout[/name_u] is the type of name that works as a nickname for almost any name, no sound similarity necessary.
It sounds to me like you are actually least attached to [name_f]Willa[/name_f], which you have chosen as a first name for your daughter! Is that true?
If so, what do you think of [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]? No [name_f]Willa[/name_f] - would you miss it more than you would miss losing [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or [name_u]Scout[/name_u]?
It seems to me on this case you will have bigger regrets about not using [name_u]Scout[/name_u] than about [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. That being said, the only name here that doesn’t truly see to factor into why you are torn is [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. Ivdon’t think flow matters as much here as your other considerations, so [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] might just be the right choice for you.
Though I agree with an above poster that [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] would be the best option. With such short names, having two middles isn’t overbearing at all.
I know an artist named Elequin, if that’s not too far out for you. Elequin [name_u]Scout[/name_u]? She’d have to spell it every time though. [name_u]Scout[/name_u] Elequin might be better.
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] (not sure if this is spunky or unique, but it’s definitely a solid name)
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] (same as above)
[name_f]Winona[/name_f] (more unique than the prior two, but not sure about spunky)
[name_u]Wren[/name_u] (doesn’t start w/the W sound, but I think it sounds nice stylistically w/[name_u]Piper[/name_u])
Names starting w/Sc or Sk that might logically lead to [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a nn (but I agree that [name_u]Scout[/name_u] could be used as a nn no matter what names are on the birth certificate):
From what you’ve said, it sounds like [name_u]Scout[/name_u] & [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] are the names you really like. If you’re fine using [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a nn w/o having it on the birth certificate, then choosing [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or something similar, & a name beginning w/W that both you & your husband like might be the way to go. Good luck!
I agree [name_u]Scout[/name_u] can just be used as a nn and I still like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] best. Some other suggestions with big sister [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (sorry for the repeats):
If I were you, I’d use [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and then call her [name_u]Scout[/name_u] as a family nickname. But I also like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. If dad is really passionate about the name [name_u]Scout[/name_u], then using it feels like honoring him as much as using the name [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].
What about [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] nn [name_u]Scout[/name_u]? I feel like [name_u]Scout[/name_u] might not fit every girl, so that would give you flexibility whether to use it. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as an honor name for dad is very cute and I think it goes well with [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. I also agree [name_u]Scout[/name_u] can work as a nickname for any name (I think the To Kill a Mockingbird character was [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]). I like [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or [name_u]Penny[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] that I think you had considered earlier. Or if you want an S name, maybe [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] or [name_f]Sally[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]?
