I met an unusually named new baby girl today, called… Tui! (TOO-ee)
Apparently, it’s a native bird name from [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand, sometimes given as a girls’ name over there. Completely new to me!
What do we think?

It’s really interesting. I personally like longer names though haha
it sounds like someone spitting
This made me chuckle, but yes, I agree. I guess I can appreciate that it is an underused bird/nature name, but I’m just not a fan of the sound.
I live in NZ and actually went to school with a girl called Tui, I always thought it was kinda cool (and the Tui bird is beautiful)
However it is also the name of a popular beer over here. Plus they use quite sexist (albeit kinda funny) ads.
As far as NZ bird names go [name_m]Kea[/name_m] (pronounced kee-uh) would probably be my favourite, they’re also pretty cheeky!
I’m also from NZ. I know a girl Tui and a boy Tui. I prefer it for a girl, I think it’s quite beautiful.
Probably helps that I love the bird, they have the best song.
Oh wow, I love this one!! Never heard of it! Thanks for sharing :)))
I love the Tui! They have a beautiful song and can also mimic sounds and human speech. Like previous posters I have met boys and girls named Tui- it is a popular M”ori name.
I’ve never heard of anyone with that name before, but it reminds me of someone I know by the nickname "Toey, " pronounced TOE ee. His formal name is [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]; Toey is the name his younger brother gave him when he had a difficult time pronouncing [name_u]Tony[/name_u].
I think there was a female character called Tui in the first season of Top of the [name_u]Lake[/name_u], which was set in NZ.
I think it’s pretty - if I met someone with that name I’d be thrilled, although I don’t think I’d ever use a name like that myself - partly because it would feel like cultural appropriation as I have no NZ links.
I actually know a girl called Tui (same pronunciation) and her older sister is [name_f]Pia[/name_f] (pee-ah)
I knew a [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand woman called Tui some years ago. Nice name.
I know a boy Tui. It sounds especially nice in the Kiwi accent because it’s said quickly. I prefer [name_f]Anoushka[/name_f] or [name_f]Nell[/name_f] for you!
@eloiset I’m not considering it myself, just sharing!
My personal opinion is that it’s very sweet and delicate, but perhaps a bit insubstantial? I love hearing new names though, so had to share. Sounds like lots of you have come across this one before!
It has a cute sound to it but doesn’t pack enough oomph for my personal tastes.
It sounds cute! I don’t know if it would age well though…
I don’t hate it. Although it reminds me of the holiday/tourism company. When they changed their name from [name_m]Thomson[/name_m] to Tui I actually remember thinking it would make a cute name.
Tui is cute for a nickname…“my little tui!”… not as a given name.
I met a lady named Tui at training recently. She was of Chinese background so I’m not sure if it’s a more common name there? I’d never heard it before then and thought it was pretty interesting but cool!
I’m Maori and from NZ and it’s actually pretty common over here. I know about 3, one of whom is actually a boy, it’s kind of a unisex name. Tui birds have a special significance to me and my mum so id really like to use it as a middle one day for a daughterz although I can’t think of any firsts that I really love with it. Was the Tui that you met from NZ?
