It’s Greek and the meaning of this girl’s name is “modest”. What do you think of it? It’s a real name and not a trendy spelling for Haiti.
You could use it if you had Greek origins, but only as a middle. Most won’t know its history/meaning, and I thought it was a [name]Heidi[/name] misspelling. I would say unusable.
I like it at a nickname and it is the name of the daughter on Parenthood. So, i would vote ok to use.
I love it, but I don’t think it would be the easiest name to live with. It seems like it’s misheard as Haiti or [name]Haley[/name] and misread as [name]Heidi[/name]–all the time.
It’s great middle name material, whether you’re Greek or not.
It may be a real name, but it looks like a creative spelling. I would save it for the middle.
@melissac - the daughter on Parenthood (love that show!) is actually Haddie, like [name]Hattie[/name].
I don’t see how it could be a misspelling of Haiti at all, t and d are much more distinct where I’m from. I guess it’s all accent dependent, but I’d be more inclined to think it a misspelling of [name]Heidi[/name] - how are you pronouncing it? [name]Hy[/name]-dee or Hay-dee or Hay-ee-dee?
Please do not use this name for a little girl. I was wondering why it made me feel gloomy and then I realized it is because it reminds me of Hades – Greek God of the Underworld.
^^ Agree with PP. Reminds me of Hades from Greek Mythology.
I agree with the Hades association. It also looks like a creative spelling of [name]Heidi[/name], Haiti, or a trendy variation of [name]Hailee[/name].
I may be in the minority, but I love it.
It’s worth noting that strictly speaking, [name]Haidee[/name] is not Greek, rather it’s English.
The name was created by the English poet, [name]Lord[/name] [name]Byron[/name], and features as a character name in his (very long) poem [name]Don[/name] [name]Juan[/name]. It was probably inspired by the Greek aidoios which means “modest”.
The first mention of [name]Haidee[/name] in the poem is…
He had an only daughter, call’d [name]Haidee[/name],
The greatest heiress of the Eastern Isles;
Besides, so very beautiful was she,
Her dowry was as nothing to her smiles:
Still in her teens, and like a lovely tree
She grew to womanhood, and between whiles
Rejected several suitors, just to learn
[name]How[/name] to accept a better in his turn.
Thank you all! Not pregnant but I still really like the name and wouldn’t use it. I’m naming my daughter [name]Rose[/name].
Thanks! I knew [name]Haidee[/name] was used in a poem but I didn’t know what it was called. By the way lol I like the names [name]Pearl[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] from your list.
I agree with others in that my first thought was Hades.
I prefer [name]Hadley[/name] or [name]Hattie[/name]. I’m not feeling [name]Haidee[/name].
I like it a lot. If you love it, use it! I don’t think people would have a hard time with it. I knew how to pronounce it the second I saw it.
