Hal as a nickname for Harvey?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] found out we’re having a boy! Husband and I had already talked about names. He loves the nickname [name_m]Hal[/name_m], and I love the full name [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] (a family name and I’m also a fan of classic names.)

Does [name_m]Hal[/name_m] work as a NN for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]? I’ve seen it more as a NN for [name_m]Harold[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but it seems like it could work for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] too?

Open the pod bay doors [name_m]Hal[/name_m]!

Hal could work for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], though without the L it makes less sense. But nicknames can be anything really.

If [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] “[name_f]Sally[/name_f]” works, [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]” does too.

I could see it working if his name was like:
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m]

Regardless I love both [name_m]Hal[/name_m] and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]

I guess I’m in the minority, I can’t see [name_m]Hal[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. I can see it more as a stand alone name actually. I think [name_m]Hal[/name_m] would do better by itself. I also have a [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] in my family, I think the nn [name_m]Harv[/name_m] is your best bet if you go with [name_m]Harvey[/name_m].

@Cmartin728
[name_m]Hal[/name_m] from [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] absolutely makes sense.
Here are some other reeeally popular, long-established NN/FN combos that are,not,100% straightup shortenings to help make you feel more assured.

Peggy/Margaret … Where did the P come from?
[name_m]Bill[/name_m]/William… B?
[name_m]Bob[/name_m]/Robert … [name_m]Rob[/name_m] makes sense, but [name_m]Bob[/name_m]?
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]/John … Not even the same sound
[name_m]Jim[/name_m]/James … Huh?
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]/Katheryn … Vowel sound changed!

Why not?!
But I do like suggestion of middle name starting with L to tie it in a bit better.
Good luck

It absolutely works! [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]” is great – very old school cool.

We’re planning on [name_m]William[/name_m] for the middle name…it doesn’t start with an l but it has a couple of ls in it so maybe that works??

I was also hung up on it not having an L, but if it’s a common nickname for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] I figured maybe it works for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] too?

Yeah, I have a relative named [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and they shorten it to [name_f]Hen[/name_f] sometimes, as like a pet name. But Har doesn’t work at all, I think [name_m]Hal[/name_m] is a really good nickname option
