Hamish?

What are your thoughts on [name]Hamish[/name] (HAY-mish?) Nameberry says it’s super Scottish and even called it “comically Caledonian,” but do you think it’s odd for an American kid who has no ties to [name]Scotland[/name]?

I think [name]Hamish[/name] is an awesome name!

I actually like it a lot! It would probably work for a boy in the US, but I still prefer it as a middle name.

[name]Hamish[/name] is fantastic! It is super scottish, but it doesn’t bother me.

I really like [name]Hamish[/name]. I think it’s Scottishness makes it even cooler.

I think with the current popularity of The Hunger Games [name]Hamish[/name] has become much more approachable to the general American public. I don’t expect it to top the charts anytime soon but I also think that it’s very usable. (+ Gaelic and Scottish names are very popular right now).

You’re thinking of Haymitch but the sound is very similar

See this is the problem of audio books. Though that spelling seems weird. Thanks for clearing that up.

Oh, that’s funny. Thanks for the giggle, I needed that this morning!

IMHO…[name]Hamish[/name] is a fine name from an adult’s point of view. However, I believe American children might tend to tease a child with this name.

I love it but I am Scottish so I’m biased. It’s uncommon in [name]Scotland[/name] but the one [name]Hamish[/name] I know is 5 and he’s gorgeous, cheeky and super smart.

I like the name a lot, but I bet people would slaughter it. There is no way people are going to say that right!

It became wildly popular in Australia (much more so than in [name]Scotland[/name]), even among people who weren’t the least Scottish, but it is completely unknown in the US. I’m sure it would be pronounced ham-ish and even when corrected would raise some eyebrows.

You could absolutely be one of the trendsetters that brings it back from the grave, but your son might have a rough time of it.

Have you considered other Scottish standards, like:

[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Alistair[/name]
[name]Archibald[/name]
Alpin
[name]Arran[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
Connaught
[name]Donald[/name]
[name]Euan[/name]
[name]Findlay[/name]
[name]Fraser[/name]
[name]Gregor[/name]
[name]Irving[/name]
[name]Malcolm[/name]
[name]Ramsey[/name]
[name]Stuart[/name]
[name]Wallace[/name]

All are very Scottish and a little easier to wear.

Thanks everyone! It’s great to hear all these opinions!

I’m not expecting or trying, just curious what everyone’s thoughts are. I was just wondering, especially because I am not at all Scottish and I don’t look it either. I just think it’s a cool name, especially with nn [name]Hayes[/name].

I hadn’t thought of pronunciation problems, but it doesn’t bother me too much- it’s not ideal, of course, but it’s not a difficult spelling and it’s pretty easy to correct. But then, for me this is all theoretical and I wouldn’t actually have to deal with it. I was mainly worried it would be weird on someone who wasn’t even a little bit Scottish. Thanks again!
