Harmony or Symphony? As a twin for Melody

It’s getting very close to the twins arrival. We think about naming one of the twins Melody. Because it’s a name that sounds beautiful and has a musical feeling towards it. My family really loves music so having a musical name is very fitting.

But we’re unsure for the other twin’s name.

We love Harmony and Symphony because of the musical feel they have and they will go very well with Melody because of their meaning and they end with a “y”.
The names sound similar but different enough to not get confused with each other a lot but with twins that’s inevitable anyway.

Melody & Symphony

But as we thought about Harmony and Symphony more, we realized some small stuff in the names that can be inconvenient in the future.
We love Harmony but we don’t want the “r” in the name to difficult to pronounce, especially here in the UK.
We also love Symphony but it’s a rarer name than Harmony and Melody. We’re not a huge fan of unique names.

We thought about other names that have a musical origin to them such as Crystal, Cadence, Cadenza, Viola but we want the musical meaning to be directly associated with the name.

We have even thought about the name Musica. But it seemed a bit too unique to us.

What do you think? Do you prefer Harmony or Symphony? What’s the reason behind your choice?

Whilst I love these beautiful musical names with the -y endings individually, using two of them on twins together feels likely to attract teasing, in my honest opinion. I like your idea of a more subtle musical term - [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_u]Cadence[/name_u] are beautiful options! What about [name_f]Allegra[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], or [name_u]Aria[/name_u]?

I’ve known a [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] here in the UK and I don’t think people had trouble with the R sound? I’d probably go with that of the two as it feels more in line with [name_f]Melody[/name_f].

[name_u]Cadence[/name_u] is directly related to music to me :person_shrugging: I like that best out of all the ones you’ve considered.

Have you considered names directly related to music that you like? That might give you more options  (ie. [name_u]Indie[/name_u] (for [name_u]Indie[/name_u] music), [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] (if you happen to be a Beatles fan), [name_u]Florence[/name_u] (as in [name_u]Florence[/name_u] and the Machine) etc)

i think of the two i like harmony best! i feel like it matches better with melody to me, and i do feel like symphony might be a little too unique for my tastes (though it is cute).

i also love the name cadence; i think it’s gorgeous!

i personally would not go too far into stuff related to artists that you like just because if you end up changing your mind about how much you love that artist later, the name might lose it’s shine. but i really like the idea of a double musical name for your twins.

good luck!

I know someone named [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] who is constantly asked, do you have a sister named Melody!!! I would go with [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_f]Symphony[/name_f], [name_u]Lyric[/name_u], [name_m]Chord[/name_m]

I do like the idea of a musical connection between the twins, but I think [name_f]Melody[/name_f] & [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] together are a bit too much, and [name_f]Symphony[/name_f] is too bold next to [name_f]Melody[/name_f].

I really like your idea of [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! [name_f]Viola[/name_f] & [name_f]Melody[/name_f] would make a gorgeous set. Seconding the suggestion of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] (Melody & [name_f]Lyra[/name_f])

Maybe…
[name_u]Lyric[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Serenade[/name_f]
[name_u]Celeste[/name_u]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
(My personal favorite musical name is [name_f]Rhapsody[/name_f], but I think that might still be too much with Melody)

[name_u]Cadence[/name_u] reads as directly related to music to me, its a musical term just like [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and I like those best together from your list. Out of the main two I’d go with [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] but it feels a bit too similar to [name_f]Melody[/name_f].

Personally I think [name_f]Melody[/name_f] is gorgeous I also love [name_f]Melodia[/name_f] but [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] and [name_f]Symphony[/name_f] seem a little matchy matchy for me, also they don’t have any intuitive nicknames, which might not be a problem for you other options:

[name_f]Sonatina[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] or [name_f]Tina[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonata[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] or [name_u]Nata[/name_u]
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]

Another left field option could be

[name_f]Jazmine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Jazz[/name_u] or [name_u]Jazzy[/name_u]
[name_u]Vivaldi[/name_u] nn [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]

All of then are musical and have the adorable nickname.

Also love the previous suggestions of
[name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Allegra[/name_f]

the musical connection between [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] is sweet, but i think it’s a bit too matchy, same with [name_f]Symphony[/name_f].

Of the two, I’d pick [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] because [name_f]Symphony[/name_f] feels a lot more out-there than [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and I can’t think of good nicknames.

That being said, I wonder if [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] might feel a bit second-rate next to [name_f]Melody[/name_f]? Since the harmony supports the melody in a piece… just a thought.

If I were naming twins using your criteria, I think I’d choose [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] to go with [name_f]Melody[/name_f].

I wouldn’t choose either. As a twin, I’m pretty anti matchy-matchy names esp for same sex twins when you’re already seen as a comparator to the other. It’s sacred and comforting being a twin but it’s also difficult and draining at times. People (incl adults) label and compare and twins grow to think it’s a zero-sum game between them. I would be giving them some breathing room with a more subtle connection between their names; to minimise teasing risk and of feeling hemmed in by each other. If you’re still adamant on a theme, I would choose two where they don’t have same starting letter or (Y) ending, and syllable count.

I would go Melody and Cadence (I really like Cadence!). Otherwise Viola, Aria, Allegra, Lyra, Piper, Calliope, or Harper - all gorgeous names and more subtle.

I wouldn’t use a name with “music” in it - it’s too intense for the child I think, esp if they decide to go into a non-artistic field. Hope all received in right spirit - am sure you’re super excited about having twins! :ribbon::ribbon:

I’m in the UK known plenty of Harmony’s never had any issues with their name being pronounced personally out of [name_f]Symphony[/name_f] & [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] my favourite is definitely [name_u]Harmony[/name_u].

However I prefer your other options I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is beautiful such a gorgeous strong unexpected but familiar name. I think [name_f]Melody[/name_f] + [name_f]Viola[/name_f] are beautiful with a musical theme without being cheesy. I also like the idea of [name_u]Cadence[/name_u] again another lovely name that feels more cohesive with [name_f]Melody[/name_f] than [name_f]Viola[/name_f] (they both have a 90s nostalgic feel) but more subtle.

Other ideas could be [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], or [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] I think these are lovely and just loose any potential cheesiness.

I really hope this is taken in the right spirit I just think twins/siblings should have some individuality and I feel [name_f]Melody[/name_f] + [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] lack that.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought when reading your post was that [name_u]Cadence[/name_u] would be a lovely musical name to fit with [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and, being a musical term, is directly associated with music. I really like the name [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] but, as already mentioned by others, I think it matches too much with [name_f]Melody[/name_f].

[name_f]Symphony[/name_f] is a bit more out there especially if you’re unsure about using a unique name.

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] is a beautiful name as a more subtle nod towards music (depending on how you pronounce it). If you’re also [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] fans this could be the perfect name.

I would either go with [name_f]Melody[/name_f] & [name_f]Viola[/name_f] or [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] & [name_u]Cadence[/name_u].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I love [name_f]Melody[/name_f] and had briefly considered it myself. I do think I would expand your options for a twin though. Both [name_f]Symphony[/name_f] and [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] paired with [name_f]Melody[/name_f] just comes off as way too much. I love the idea of if you keep with the music idea to choose something a lot more subtle like [name_f]Viola[/name_f].
