So, my husband and I finally decided on a name for our baby girl, due in 3 weeks!!!
We have chosen [name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name], and think it’s pretty, feminine, and unique… but not crazy off the wall. Also, we think it fits well with her big sister’s name, [name]Addison[/name] [name]May[/name] (2.5 yrs old).
HOWEVER… we made the mistake of telling a few family members the name, and now it has gotten out to a few MORE family members (Thanks for the slip up Grandma), and the reactions are all the same… “[name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name]??? Huh, that’s different.” And they don’t mean it in a positive way.
SO, my question to all of you is, “Is [name]Harper[/name] that strange of a name?” And, do you think it is a name that will be accepted by teachers, peers and acquaintances throughout her life?
We still love the name, and I know that’s all that should matter, but it’s nice to get a non-biased point of view on the subject.
It is not strange, but I don’t think it is as unique as you may think (sorry to be a joy kill). Since a disney show with a character named [name]Harper[/name] and because of [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name] it has risen in popularity and is now rank #54. It is a lovely name and I would stick with it if I were you. You have finally found a name you love, don’t second guess yourself. You may want to consider the run in effect with the middle name though. It could sound like [name]Harper[/name] Ose or Harpa [name]Rose[/name].
[name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is nice. [name]Harper[/name] is NMS but the two sound nice together.
However, it isn’t even remotely strange, different, or off the wall. It’s one of the fastest rising girl’s names (Went from #296 to #54 in the past 3 years alone) for a first name + one of the most common middle names. If you love the name, keep it, but it’s not “unique” per se. Good luck!!
(FYI…)
Popularity of the female name [name]Harper[/name]:
2011 - 54
2010 - 118
2009 - 172
2008 - 296
2007 - 439
2006 - 508
2005 - 745
2004 - 887
I agree, it’s not strange or off the wall at all. It’s actually one of the most trending names right now and it’s headed straight for the top. [name]Harper[/name] is about to be EVERYWHERE.
I do love it, though, I think it’s got this cool surnamey vibe and [name]Addison[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] are fabulous together, and I do love the association to both music and [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though Nameberry seems to be over it, for the most part, I still really love it and [name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is adorable.
I love [name]Harper[/name]! It used to be on my list for a baby girl. The only reason it is not on my list anymore is because it has gotten too popular. [name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is a beautiful name!
I don’t think it’s too strange or out there, especially since the [name]Beckham[/name]'s used it for their first daughter [name]Harper[/name] [name]Seven[/name], I imagine it will become more commonly used. They’ll get used to it, I remember thinking the name [name]Ciara[/name] was strange when my aunt and uncle used it for my cousin, now we couldn’t imagine her being called anything else!
Wow! Thank you for your responses! I had no idea it was becoming so popular. [name]Every[/name] site I’ve looked at ranks it in the #100’s. I live in the mid-west, Wisconsin, and we don’t get the “trends” as soon as the rest of the us, obviously. lol
We love the name, and we are sticking with it!
I agree it is not off the wall at all and have met at least 3 [name]Harper[/name]'s under the age of 2 in NY. It is also the name of one of the male characters on the Fresh Beats Band so my 2 kids insist that it is a boys name even though I have only seen in on girls. I think is goes perfectly with [name]Addison[/name] and all that matters is that you love it! Good [name]Luck[/name]!
It depends on where you are, it is uber popular in america but only recently! Older generations may have not heard of it. I am from [name]England[/name] and I don’t think its quite impacted here as it has [name]America[/name]!
I personally don’t like it as before it started to come popular the only places I’ve heard it is as a last name and I personally think its quite masculine, I personally don’t like these sort of ‘trendy’ names!
[name]Addison[/name] is not my style either, but [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Addison[/name] go together as they are both currently very trendy popular names and masculine.
I don’t feel that it’s off the wall because I know a little girl named [name]Harper[/name] =) and she is so smart and stinking adorable! I remember when I first heard it I was a little taken aback, I suppose because It was new to me. Now I wish I could of used that name!
I’m not a fan of [name]Harper[/name] myself, it’s just really not my style.
BUT, there’s nothing strange about it. From an unbiased standpoint I would say that the name flows extremely well AND I think it goes perfectly with [name]Addison[/name]!
My advice is to NOT LET THEM CHANGE YOUR MIND! <3 Stick with Harper Rose! <3
Out of my friends, I can name at least five Harpers named in the last two years alone. Like someone else said, it may be unusual to the past generations but, good grief, it’s basically the new [name]Jennifer[/name].
It is pretty, and I like that it starts with an H (H names seem strong and noble to me for some reason). Your girls will both have very acceptable names for a societal pov, no worries there. But, if you are concerned about her being known by here fn and then the first letter of her last (in order to differentiate between the other girls nammed [name]Harper[/name] in her class) …well, that may be a real concern.
I have to agree with the previous posts: it’s not a strange or uncommon name now. I’m a midwestern girl too (Minnesota) and I have three friends with young daughters named [name]Harper[/name], so it doesn’t seem to be much of a regional thing.
I think that [name]Addison[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] sound very nice as a sibling set and I wouldn’t worry too much about your relatives. Once they meet that little girl, they will love her and her name.
I don’t think it’s strange at all. [name]Harper[/name] is hugely popular right now. I know of at least 3 baby girl’s named [name]Harper[/name] who are all under 2.
[name]Harper[/name] and [name]Addison[/name] compliment each other well, I say go for it.
