I have been lurking around Nameberry for a while now - not pregnant, simply a name nerd! I have some name combinations which are my absolute favourites, but I also like to have other, themed lists - one of them is Traditional Names.
For this list, I like names which are instantly recognisable in the English speaking world, classics. While popularity doesn’t matter, I wouldn’t use a name particularly associated with a period of time (e.g. [name]Jennifer[/name]) or a very vintage choice, as much as I love them (e.g. [name]Lydia[/name]). [name]Just[/name] classic.
My question is, could you name two daughters [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name]? For me, [name]Juliet[/name] just has the edge over [name]Julia[/name], but I worry about the repeating endings. Would it matter or be noticeable if there was another daughter with a non -et ending name? Or if the daughters were part of a sibling group of, say, four or six children?
Other names on this list are :
[name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Timothy[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Anna[/name].
Possibly :
[name]Frank[/name]
[name]Henry[/name].
Probably not :
[name]Jack[/name] (because it is number one, and while I said popularity wouldn’t bother me with this list, that is a bit much for me).
I like for the nicknames :
[name]Christian[/name] nn [name]Kit[/name] - we already have a [name]Christopher[/name] in the family, and this is the only other way I can think of to get to [name]Kit[/name] for a boy - but I’m not actually very keen on [name]Christian[/name].
[name]Katherine[/name] nn [name]Kit[/name]/[name]Kitty[/name].
[name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Elsa[/name].
[name]Hi[/name], [name]Auburn[/name]! I love your list! While I personally wouldn’t use [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name] together because of the “iet” endings, I totally agree with you that with other children in the mix, the matching endings will be less noticeable. If you still love both names when your’e ready to have kids, I hope you get to use them!
My favorites from your list are: [name]Anna[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Henry[/name], and [name]Joseph[/name]. I think all the names on your list are great, though! I love classic names!
Thank you for replying, [name]Jill[/name]! I am glad that you don’t think the matching endings would be too much of a problem. I think I would be disappointed if I married someone who didn’t like my absolute favourite names (which are more unusual than these names), but I would definitely be appeased if he let me use some of the Traditional Names.
My favourites of your suggestions are [name]Rose[/name], [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Peter[/name], for this list. I also though of [name]Victoria[/name]. One of the names on your list is mine, although I am not sure I would like to share it on the internet. It is nice that it would sound good with my children’s names, though!
I have another question, to do with a different one of my lists - Established Word Names. There are only three on the list, [name]Rose[/name], [name]Ivy[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think the botanical connection between [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name] is too much? I don’t think it bothers me, because [name]Ivy[/name] is a plant and [name]Rose[/name] is a flower, but other people’s opinions would be brilliant. And suggestions for other names which fit the category, especially boys’ names (are there any?) would be wonderful, if anyone is interested!
[name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name] as sisters…In my opinion, I wouldn’t do that. [name]Juliet[/name] is most often associated with [name]Romeo[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name]…I think of beauty when I think of [name]Juliet[/name]. [name]Harriet[/name]…well, [name]Harriet[/name] for me doesn’t have many positive associations. If I used the name, I would call the child with a nickname. My dad has a cousin whose real name is [name]Harriet[/name]. She is called [name]Happy[/name] (and the nickname suits her so much). I also [name]Hattie[/name] or [name]Harry[/name].
I love the idea of the nn [name]Happy[/name]! [name]How[/name] sweet. I would probably just let a nn come naturally which suits her, but I really like [name]Hattie[/name], and [name]Harry[/name] is nice for a tomboy. [name]Juliet[/name] would be [name]Jules[/name] or [name]Julie[/name], I think.
