Harris but Last Name Starts with S?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all!

I love the name [name_m]Harris[/name_m]. We need an H or Ch name and this is the only one I really like. However we have a last name that starts St… So I was thinking this might be weird for him, [name_m]Harris[/name_m] St… What is everyone’s thoughts about that? We considered [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] but it’s so popular/formal and have friends with a baby [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]. Thoughts ?

The two S sounds in quick succession will have the tendency to blend together. When said quickly, the name could possibly sound like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] St—. However, I don’t think that makes it unusable. I personally like boy names that end in S, so I understand if you can’t find a name you like better.

I think it’s fine. My first name ends in an N and my last name starts with an N. No one has ever made any comment about it at all. In fact, I didn’t even know it could be thought of as an issue until coming to this site. I say my own name out loud multiple times and it sounds fine. I think that’s what you should do, say [name_m]Harris[/name_m] St- multiple times and see how it feels rolling off the tongue. Can you imagine this name on birth announcements? Can you imagine this name being spoken during kindergarten roll call? What about at high school graduation? If it sounds funny to your own ears, then don’t use it. If it love it, use it.

I think the only thing that would give me pause is if the first and last name rhyme. [name_m]Harris[/name_m] Starris or [name_m]Harris[/name_m] Stannis or something similar might be a bit too much. It’s no [name_m]Mingus[/name_m] Reedus, but it still sounds odd to the ear.

I also agree that it’s fine. [name_m]Even[/name_m] when I say [name_m]Harris[/name_m] [St. [name_u]James[/name_u]] or [name_m]Harris[/name_m] [Stevens] or [name_m]Harris[/name_m] [Stenopoulous], I still hear [name_m]Harris[/name_m], not [name_m]Harry[/name_m]. The “S” sounds go on for a while, and it makes it a little awkward, but I think [name_m]Harris[/name_m] is fine.

We have that issue with my sons name, and it never bothered us. I love [name_m]Harris[/name_m]!

Thanks for the encouragement!!

I think it’s fine. Look through a yearbook and you’ll see that it isn’t a big deal.
