[name_m]Hi[/name_m]. I’ve been stalking this board for quite some time searching for names for our third child. I’d love your honest opinions on the two boy names we are currently deciding between! This baby will be joining siblings [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m].
We seem to like recognizable yet not super popular names (we are in the US)
Thoughts on [name_m]Harry[/name_m] vs [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]?
I’m drawn to the softness and nature feel of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], obviously we like that. Yet I also love the uncommon, spunky vibe I get from [name_m]Harry[/name_m]. Middle name will be a family name ([name_u]James[/name_u]), hubby isn’t interested in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Harry[/name_m], unfortunately.
Trying to look at [name_m]Harry[/name_m] from a US perspective (i.e. far from the Top 10, unlike here), I think I prefer it with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. As you say, it’s spunky but also cute, which is also how I’d describe your other children’s names.
I am in the U.S. and prefer [name_m]Harry[/name_m], I don’t think the hairy association is a big concern. I’d be more concerned about [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is more masculine and handsome than [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], but I personally dislike unisex names.
I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] the best with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m]! [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] works too, but I think [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is more stylistically similar to [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m].
PS- I love [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]! Super cute with your other two.
Good luck!

I prefer [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], but you might consider [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Harry[/name_m]? It could help to avoid the “hairy” pronunciation issue.
As a person who comes from a [name_m]Harry[/name_m]=hairy area (in pronunciation, anyway), I don’t see a problem with this name. I’ve known people old and young called [name_m]Harry[/name_m], and they’ve all worn it well. I don’t think “hairy” when I see “[name_m]Harry[/name_m]”, and I doubt most people do. I like both names a lot, so it’s hard to choose. Maybe wait until the baby is born to see which one clicks?
Thank you ladies so much for the feedback! We are thinking since [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is trending up in our area ([name_u]California[/name_u]) that we might lean towards [name_m]Harry[/name_m]. Hubby recently wanted to consider [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. It’s growing on me! He has vetoed so much, but I’m always open to more suggestions if you have anything you think would fit!
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but ‘[name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]’ is the full name of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I absolutely adore the name [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and don’t want to put you off using it but there is that connection to be aware of. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is gorgeous too.
We have thought about the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection. I’m still ok with it since it’s a family name. Luckily he will be called [name_m]Harry[/name_m] LastName and not [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] all the time. Plus our last name isn’t close to [name_m]Potter[/name_m] thankfully
I was going to suggest [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] as well. But I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] slightly more than [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. Would you consider [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]?
I’ve known two [name_m]Harrys[/name_m]. One I knew as a kid (it was actually short for [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]) was made fun of quite a bit because it sounds the same as hairy. One was an older man who was bald, and everyone made kind of a joke out of that. I’m in the US, and met both of those [name_m]Harrys[/name_m] in [name_u]Colorado[/name_u].
That being said, I would definitely lengthen [name_m]Harry[/name_m] into something like [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and go by that to avoid “hairy” or go with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] instead.
My favourite name out of the two is [name_m]Harry[/name_m], and so I vote for this. I also think this sounds better as a sibset. However, if I were choosing between [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], my vote would be the latter because I think it flows better. I love [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m], too, BTW!
I prefer [name_m]Harry[/name_m]. These names have a very different feel to me. [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is spunky, as you said, and sounds best with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] for me. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is much softer and more feminine to me, so I would definitely choose [name_m]Harry[/name_m].
