Harsh Opinions on Obscure Polish Name

I was just wondering what people think of the name [name]Onek[/name]? [name]How[/name] would you pronounce it (without researching prn.?) It’s a polish name my fiance found that he LOVES. I like it a lot as well, and it sounds great with our last name! If you met a little boy named [name]Onek[/name] would you think it was cute, or just strange?

Thanks for your opinions!

Well, I have a massive, massive crush on Polish names, so I really like this. haha. I do have other Polish names I like more ([name]Marek[/name], Jonasz, [name]Ziven[/name]–especially love [name]Ziven[/name]–etc.), but [name]Onek[/name] intrigues me! I think I’d say OH-neck, but I could be saying it wrong. Much as I love Polish names, I’m not terribly great at pronouncing them, lol.

I like [name]Onek[/name]! It’s quite cute and not as strange as some of the made up names I’ve seen. I’d pronounce it On-eck. Polish names are cool - I like [name]Aurek[/name], Radek and Lukasz too

I would say OH-neck also. I think [name]Onek[/name] is an interesting name, I don’t know if it gives me the image of “cute”, even on a little boy, but it seems very wearable. Although it’s a name I’ve never heard before the sounds are familiar enough that it wouldn’t be strange (assuming my pronunciation is close to correct).

When I read the title of your post I was expecting to find the name to be pretty silly looking and not very usable… But I think [name]Onek[/name] looks so cool and is totally usable. I would probably pronounce it like Oh-nick or Oh-neck.

My first thought on prn is ahn-eck and it would be super cute on a little boy!

I’d pronounce it O-nek, or maybe closer to owe-nik? I don’t know anything about Polish, though, so I have no clue.
It looks nice, though.
I hope you’ll update after more replies, because I want to know how it’s pronounced

According to this (below) it seems as though it’s pronounced wneck, and IMHO, if people aren’t careful enough to observe the slight w sound, they may think you named your son Neck.

I don’t like it. Sorry.

Is it pronounced oh-neck? Anyways, for a Polish name, it’s pretty cute  I’d probably be a little taken aback at first, but it’s a lovely name.

I would assume Oh-neck, but i’d pronounce the vowels slightly softer, kwim? Then again, i’m a language person Most Americans are probably going to think Onnick, unfortunately. American accents butcher a lot of foreign names, but more from ignorance than being incapable of making the appropriate sounds.

Hello all! Thanks for all of the opinions! I had a really hard time finding the proper pronounciation for the name. I only found one sight saying it was pronounced Wnek. Not so sure how that quite sounds! I [name]LOVE[/name] it pronounced O-nick though, which is pretty close to how i assume wneck sounds.

Also, I looooove [name]Ziven[/name]!!

I pronounce it Awn-ick, like onyx without the final s sound. It’s okay, but definitely on the strange side. I think it would work as a mn, and possibly as a first depending on your location.
