Harvey: useable in our current culture?

My hubby and I are due in a couple of weeks (though it seems like he would very much like out NOW, thank you very much!) and we both like the name Harvey, a name we both heard on Suits. But is it a name to avoid for a while, between the Hurricane Harvey, Harvey Weinstein, and the fast food connection?

I really like it and I think its totally usable nowdays! I think it fits your boys names aswell

I actually struggled to think of any immediate associations for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], let alone bad ones. I know a little [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], and I think it’s a cute name, and on trend.

I think Harvey’s usable because it’s a well-established name. However, my first thought was definitely Harvey Weinstein, so I wouldn’t use it myself.

It’s definitely usable

Absolutely usable: First off, it’s a classic name with a history long predating any recent scandal or weather involving that name.

I follow the news and still had to think about what you might be referring to as far as current events go. I think that’s a good indicator: [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein (the bigger risk of the two [name_f]IMO[/name_f]) is always referred to in the news with first AND last name. His first name is widely known so he doesn’t own it (unlike Beyoncé, [name_f]Madonna[/name_f], Björk, etc). And I’m finding that the name [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is unaffected for me by recent news.

Go for it

I feel like it was a well known name before the hurricane and the Weinstein scandal, so I think it’s still usable.

I previously associated [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] with the hurricane but now I associate it with Weinstein. He’s a bad association but I have chosen to look past him because it is a great little name. I consider it usable.

I think the question is if somebody did make those connections would it bother you? If not use it. If so [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] might be a better alternative.

I like it and don’t think it’s stuck to the associations you mentioned. Go for it!

I think it’s still useable since it was a known name before the [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein scandal broke. There’s [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Milk, [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Keitel etc.

[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is a great name.

It depends. Your worldview, obviously, has a huge impact on what well-known names have become unusable and which associations are simply unpleasant (to you OR to others) but can be ignored. Ask yourself, “[name_m]How[/name_m] often will he really encounter the Weinstein scandal on the news by the time he’s old enough to understand it? [name_m]How[/name_m] often will he really hear about the hurricane?”

My personal consensus is that I really like the name [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], but I would never use it at this point. The Weinstein association is too awful. But would I associate a child named [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] with the scandal? No. Would I judge his parents for giving him the name? No. It’s a great name, and it might just change my perception of the name.

Ugh, I’m rambling, but I hope this helped somewhat.

I think it would be a bit weird to use it now since the [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein stuff just happened and it’s a fairly distinctive name. If it were me I would feel the need to explain “we loved this name so much before all the bad stuff happened!” and that kind of takes away from the positive vibes. If there’s anything else you like I would avoid it. Maybe [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]?

I think it’s usable but I’d hesitate personally because of Weinstein. It’s been something of a watershed moment and I don’t think that particular association will fade into obscurity any time soon. I don’t think it will necessarily wipe out the name, but I think some will avoid it from now on (hey, this may be a good thing if you do use it!)

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]?

I seldom say this, but I don’t find it usable at present. Mostly b/c of Weinstein.

My first association with [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Dent, the Two-Face (DC Comics; one of Batman’s enemies).

My first thought on [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] was the movie, starring [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m]. It’s about a man and his 6’ tall invisible rabbit friend.

I say go for it!

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

I thought of [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein immediately. I have never heard the name used personally so all I know of is the hurricane and Weinstein. So I personally wouldn’t use it. Also, sharing the name with a hurricane can be hard. My name is [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] and I was named before the hurricane, but I have been teased and every time the hurricane is mentioned it has me spinning my head to see who was talking to me. And further on that note, people sometimes want to share their hurricane stories hearing my name.

I’ve really struggled with deciding whether [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is currently usable.
Before Weinstein, I’d probably think of [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] the movie first, because I loved it when I was little. I’d then probably think of [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Milk or [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Dent or multiple other characters with the name.
Now, when I hear [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], I immediately think of Weinstein. Its unfortunate, because the name is so sweet. The stuff with [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Weinstein is still so current, though. I personally wouldnt use the name at present moment, because I wouldnt want me or my child to be associated with such a horrible situation.

I agree with a pp, I wouldnt personally judge someone for using [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] and I wouldnt automatically think of Weinstein when meeting a child with the name.
I do think some people would probably associate it with Weinstein, though.

It’s a shame really, I always thought [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] was such an adorable, loveable name. Overall though, I wouldn’t use it. Not when the Weinstein situation is still current. I wouldnt want that association at all, and knowing I’d get it is too much of a negative to find the name usable personally.

(the hurricane is also a not so great association, but I think Weinstein is a worse one. Perhaps when your son is older, no one will associate the name with the hurricane, but theres no way of knowing. I still think of the hurricane when I hear the name [name_f]Katrina[/name_f]
Jaguarqueen gave some interesting insight on what it is like to be associated with a hurricane, and I dont think I’d want my child to have to go through that either!)
