I posted a poll yesterday in regards to three unisex names that my husband I are deciding between. Thanks to all who responded - it has been so helpful! [name_m]Just[/name_m] had one more question - has anyone ever heard of the name [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] being used for a girl? Nameberry has it listed as being unisex. I personally don’t know anyone named [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] so it’s hard for me to judge. [name_m]Just[/name_m] trying to get a sense of what other people think of when they hear this name. Thanks in advance!
I’ve never even heard of an actual person named [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] but just looking at the name my immediate thought is of a boy. I think it’s probably one of those ‘unisex’ names that has an obvious gender association and just kinda goes that way. If I just saw this name written down with no context, like [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m], especially without a middle or if the middle was also unisex I’d just assume it was a boy because [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] sounds like a boy’s name to me.
I do not know of anyone ever named that at all [name_m]IRL[/name_m] except that one author. I love the name though, for a girl too.
I never heard of [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] being used on any gender before. I does sound more masculain, but I can see this being used on a girl. I had a friend in highschool that was named [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], and we called her [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] sometimes.
I’ve never heard of a [name_u]Mercer[/name_u], male or female. If I were to guess a gender I would say male, but it could be either.
Like the pp I’ve known someone named [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Merci[/name_f].
Never known anyone named [name_u]Mercer[/name_u]. A lot of the occupation names are masculine, though not all ([name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u]).
I personally like [name_f]Merced[/name_f] because of the river.
I would say boy if I heard/saw it.
It reminds me of mrsa (mersuh) though so I would never use it.
I haven’t heard it as either a boy or a girl name. However while I feel it is masculine it could be a cute name on a girl. But I tend to like boy-ish names on girls.
I know a [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] and she always goes by [name_f]Mercy[/name_f].
If I saw this name, I would think they were a girl because it looks like [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], an obvious girl name, it also happens that the only person I met with this name is a girl.
There’s a male children’s author names [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] (fn) and I actually know a guy close to my age who is named [name_u]Mercer[/name_u].
This is my first time hearing it too; It could be unisex, I suppose, but I would assume male if I saw it written down, a la [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Tanner[/name_m], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], etc. I personally think the traditional [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] is much more appealing for a little girl, as [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] just has a very hard sound.
Personally, I have never met or known a [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] so for me I would consider it unisex.
[name_u]Mercer[/name_u] island, in [name_m]Washington[/name_m]'s Seattle area is what springs to mind. Never heard of it as a name, but it does ring masculine. That said, you could probably give her a girly middle name to make it pop.
Thanks for all of your responses! It’s always great to have a sounding board and hear multiple perspectives. My husband and I are looking for a unique name that isn’t too off the grid. We keep trending towards unisex names. If anyone knows of a name that fits the bill, feel free to respond Thanks, again!!
Never heard it on a girl, and hope I never do.
I only know it from [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] [name_m]Mayer[/name_m], a male author who wrote these [name_m]Little[/name_m] Critter books that are fairly popular. I’d call that a positive association.
Sharing sounds with [name_f]Marcelle[/name_f], [name_f]Marcella[/name_f], [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] and [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], and not having ever been popular on boys, I think it’s ok for a girl.
I’ve never met a [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] myself but I feel like it would be more fitting for a boy.
The only [name_u]Mercer[/name_u] I know is a girl. It’s her grandmother’s maiden name, I believe. She has bright red hair.
I’ve never known a [name_u]Mercer[/name_u]. At first thought, it seems like a boy’s name, but could definitely work for a girl.
