Has Nameberry ruined any names for you?

I love nameberry, don’t get me wrong, but have you ever loved a name and then had it a bit ruined by this site?

Maybe you liked a name but then came here and got sick of seeing it here and realised it was becoming too popular.

In my case there are some names I have liked/do like but when I’ve seen people discussing them on here and thought, “Maybe I’m seeing this name all wrong.” Sometimes someone will combine a name I love with one I hate, that I feel isn’t similar in feel to it at all. But maybe everyone disagrees and sees it differently to me.
And sometimes people will talk about a name I like and say what they think of it and it’s completely different to the feel I have for the name or how I interpret it.

Does anyone else ever get this and it throws them off the name because they think they’re seeing it all wrong?

Not necessarily. But because many people have similar taste as I do, I see names that I like MUCH more often than I do in real life. E.g. never in my life met a [name]Sylvie[/name], but read the name here constantly. This is why I think when I’m pregnant I’m going to stay away from this site so I don’t see the names I want to use and have their uniqueness diminished.

Definitely! [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name] are perfect examples of this. I used to love them, until I saw them so much on here. But Nameberry has also gotten me to love a lot of names, and discover new ones.

[name]Isla[/name], I never knew how popular it was until’ I came here. Not saying it’s a bad thing though
& let’s just say, i’m not really into names like [name]Amy[/name] anymore…

It’s strange, but for me every time I see one of my fav’s crack a “Nameberry top 100” I jump up and down. I guess that I feel my good taste is being recognized by those I wished my choices to be smiled upon. I chose [name]Evangeline[/name] when I was nine and I came here and felt so proud! On the flip side-

someone here said that [name]Amy[/name] has lost it’s appeal, now that, I get. I love the names [name]Jennifer[/name] and [name]Jason[/name] (ducks) but there is too much pressure at this point to choose something namberry-worthy, and I would rather do that than ‘settle’ for another [name]Jennifer[/name] or [name]Jason[/name]. I can’t go back, but I’m not sad about it.

The funny thing is it’s only for girls names. My tastes are VERY different from Nameberry for boys. E.g. all surnames are out.“European” names ([name]Oliver[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name]) are also not my style, which are favorites around here.

I really like going on nameberry to read blogs and comments on names. I feel that, though, the whole popularity concern ruins so many pretty names for a lot of people. I’m not sure how to explain it, but the popularity of a name shouldn’t define what the name means to the parent.

I’m not sad about it at all… I rather prefer it.

Here, here!

I’ve found nameberry to be pretty helpful for making me see how much I like a name. There are a few names that I love but that are a bit to popular and probably not “nameberry worthy” but I realized that I like the names so much that I don’t care. Names that I like but don’t love can sometimes be ruined due to comments on here though. (It made me realize that they weren’t the right names for me though anyway.)

Girls
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name]

Boys
[name]Jack[/name]
[name]Jacob[/name]

[name]Charlotte[/name] for me too. I am now worried its too popular but I am not sure it really is as popular in reality. I cannot imagine it moving from #87 to the top 10 in one year but it certainly feels that way here and on Nymbler.

It is still on my list with the decsion to made this Thursday when our baby girl arrives.

My son’s name is [name]Jack[/name] born in 07 and though we do meet some we dont see as many as you would think according to nameberry and nymbler.

There are plenty of named I like that are popular. If I like a name enough, it being popular won’t change my mind on it.

The only thing that would change my mind of a name is if it ended up having a negative vibe with it or if someone I know has used it or told me they liked it first. I just feel guilty stealing a name.
