Has pop culture ruined it?

So I had considered honouring my [name]German[/name] heritage with my favourite name [name]Alice[/name] and pairing it with the honoree name [name]Esme[/name] (after my aunt who passed away, whose birthday was in [name]May[/name].) Since The Twilight [name]Saga[/name] they’ve become hit names; but I should I let that bother me? I mean if I have a daughter she’ll primarily go by her first name or a nickname. So should I just do it, if the opportunity arise and I still love [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name]. I don’t mind the reference, I just hate the idea of ‘Really? You named your daughter after Twilight.’

No! [name]Alice[/name] is an old name. If anything I think [name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland not Twilight.
It’s a classic,beautiful name.
[name]Esme[/name] is an old name too!
I think [name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name] may flow slightly better than [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] though. But it’s a lovely name either way.

I agreed that I would think [name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland not Twilight. And I agreed that [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] doesn’t really flow well.

I agree with others.

[name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name] sounds better, or maybe [name]Alicia[/name] [name]Esme[/name].

ditto

My first [name]Alice[/name] association is Wonderland. Twilight is more [name]Bella[/name] and [name]Edward[/name] to me. I am not keen on [name]Esme[/name] in general, Twilight or not.

I really love both names, and especially love [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] together! If you really love them, (and they seem extra special because of family ties,) you should use them. I will warn you, though. I work with young children for a living and in all honesty, if I saw the name “[name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name]” on my roster I would definitely be thinking “eye roll, Twilight nut” in the back of my mind. I’m sorry! I know it seems unfair, but it’s really just the truth. It’s very unfortunate your names were stolen by Twilight mania! I had a similar experience with [name]Bella[/name].

Anyway, hope my comment was constructive and not hurtful. Again, I really love the name and the fact that it has familial significance for you. But I do think there will be a lot of people out there, (not as open-minded as the nameberry crew) who will be judging that name. Best of luck!

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] has not been ruined. I do not understand the huge focus on Twilight names. Only Twilight fans are going to look at the name [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] and think of Twilight. Most people only recognize [name]Bella[/name], [name]Edward[/name], and [name]Jacob[/name] as being characters from Twilight.

I wouldn’t. My daughter is [name]Bella[/name]. Almost every time I tell someone her name I get “Oh, you named her after Twilight?” UGH! No, I did not. She was born before those stupid movies ever came out. It’s beyond frustrating! So if you do go that way, be prepared to be asked that all the time. Especially if you go with both [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name]. I think [name]Alice[/name] alone would be just fine and you wouldn’t get the Twilight question that often, but with both you probably would. [name]Even[/name] if you used [name]Esme[/name] as a first name you’d probably get it a lot. [name]Just[/name] because most people haven’t heard the name [name]Esme[/name] before Twilight came out.

Not true. [name]Even[/name] people who haven’t seen Twilight, many know the characters names. [name]Alice[/name] alone would be fine. But putting them together? Yeah, she can expect comments. I’m not a Twilight fan. I’ve never seen the movies, but I know the names of most of the characters.

If you really love the name(s) use them. [name]Just[/name] prepare yourself for the irritating comments.

[name]Do[/name] what you have to do … I love that you want to honor a relative! My first association with [name]Alice[/name] is “[name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland”, and [name]Esme[/name] is pretty.

The flow ([name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] vs [name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name]) depends on the surname, so play around with the two names. [name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name] might flow better on its own, but [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] could work with the right surname.

No, not ruined. I’d use them.

I think the whole ‘pop culture reference’ thing is overrated. I’ve never read Twilight and nor have most of my friends. Nobody I know would think that a good, traditional name like [name]Edward[/name] or [name]Alice[/name] was ‘after’ Twilight,

My husband’s name is [name]Edward[/name] [name]Anthony[/name], which is my favorite boy name in the entire world and we have plans to use it for a son. As you may know, that is the exact first and middle name of the Twilight character. It would never put me off using the name, because it is such a special name to me; the name of the most wonderful man I know and the name I would never hesitate to pass on to my son just because of some stupid pop culture reference that will likely be forgotten in a few years anyway. The meaning you put behind the name you give your child is what counts. As long as your daughter always knows of the strong woman she was named after, that’s what matters. There may be comments, but just ignore them! There will always be another trend that comes along. [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] is a beautiful, wonderful name.

never seen nor read twilight… I wouldnt associate the names with twilight… [name]Alice[/name] is not a fave of mine but I do like [name]Esme[/name]…

I think [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] is a lovely combo, and I really don’t think the association is so strong as to keep you from using it at all. Like you say, she’d go by [name]Alice[/name] (really, how often do people use middle names these days anyway) most of the time, and therefore wouldn’t have that double association to deal with. [name]Alice[/name] by herself doesn’t scream Twilight at all.

I honestly do think that combo has been pretty much ruined  At least for me. Instead of thinking ‘wow, what a classically-named baby’ all i think is ‘trendy’ which I know you’re not going for. If I were you I would try something like ‘[name]Alice[/name] [name]May[/name]’ or ‘[name]Esme[/name] [name]Elise[/name]’ to avoid the connotations.

I also prefer [name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name], but I still think [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esme[/name] is a lovely name. [name]Don[/name]'t let the association bother you.

With that combination I would definetly think of Twilight, but put that aside it is pretty and means something to you. Honestly I would say go with what you love, however here is some suggestions if you are still bothered by the pairing:

Try different variations of the names:

[name]Adelais[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Alicia[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
Aleida/[name]Alida[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Ada[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Alyssa[/name]/[name]Alissa[/name] [name]Esme[/name]

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Esmerelda[/name]

Or try other [name]German[/name] names:

[name]Annika[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Ariane[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Greta[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Leonore[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Lisbeth[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
Marlis [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Melitta[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Saskia[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Thora[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Verena[/name] [name]Esme[/name]

Or even put [name]Esme[/name] in front.

[name]Hope[/name] that helped, and good luck.

I think [name]Alice[/name] is classic enough and has enough other associations for people that they don’t immediately think of Twilight. It’s a lovely name (one of my cousins has this name!) that you should definitely use if you love it.

[name]Esme[/name] I’m not so sure of, as I think that this is more closely related to Twilight because there are so few other [name]Esme[/name] examples out there. Plus, it’s not just the mother character [name]Esme[/name], there will also be the daughter named Renesme in the final movie, which I think will further tarnish the name for people.

I second the sugggestion of using [name]Esmerelda[/name] for a middle name instead? It has [name]Esme[/name] in it, but won’t be associated with Twilight. Plus, I think that [name]Alice[/name] [name]Esmeralda[/name] would be such a pretty name

I agree that [name]Esme[/name] [name]Alice[/name] flows best.
As far as the name association goes, I would think by the time she’s in school, the Twilight hub bub would have died down. I don’t think it would be a huge issue.

It’s a lovely name- hope you use it!

Best wishes!
