Have I gone crazy...

…or are [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Valerie[/name] and [name]Janet[/name] actually very pretty names if you look past the datedness? I’m seriously crushing on [name]Valerie[/name], help!

[name]Margaret[/name] I do not like personally, I think it sounds way too old-lady-ish even though I have known several my own age.

[name]Valerie[/name] is alright, but I prefer [name]Valery[/name]. I do think [name]Valerie[/name] itself is nice though.

I actually really like [name]Janet[/name], but I know a [name]Janet[/name] who is my age (16) and she says she hates her name because it’s really old-sounding. :frowning:

I like [name]Valerie[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] is especially not dated. [name]Janet[/name] seems a bit more dated to me though.

[name]Margaret[/name] is different from [name]Valerie[/name] and [name]Janet[/name] since it’s a classic, so I wouldnt say it’s dated. I personally like [name]Valerie[/name] and some variations of it ([name]Valeria[/name] - which is quite popular in [name]France[/name] but I think it’s a medication here? or vitamin?) a lot. I’m not big on [name]Janet[/name] but I know one who’s around 30 and she really likes her name, I dont think she’s ever had a problem with it and it’s pretty “dated” even for a 30 year old.

I like [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Valerie[/name] is ok. [name]Janet[/name] isn’t my cup of tea. I know too many that are 50+

[name]Margaret[/name] - imo, this is timeless! I can’t even imagine it being considered dated. There are so many great nns, too–[name]Maggie[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Mae[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Mari[/name], etc.

[name]Valerie[/name] - once you get past the datedness, this is really cool, I think! I still have a huge thing for the name [name]Valeria[/name], but I won’t use it due to its connection to “malaria”. Although it is in the top 100 girls’ names so maybe I should just get over that worry. It must be popular enough since it’s used so much. I like [name]Valeria[/name] a lot more, but [name]Valerie[/name] is sweet and pretty.

[name]Janet[/name] - sorry, I can’t get past the dated feel of this! I love [name]Jane[/name] but [name]Janet[/name] holds no appeal to me at all. I want to get past it to see where the appeal comes from but I just can’t. :frowning:

Edited for privacy.

To me, [name]Margaret[/name] is classic, not dated, especially since it has such spunky nicknames like [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name] and [name]Greta[/name]. [name]Valerie[/name] and [name]Janet[/name] on the other hand, still just scream 70s and 80s to me. Out of the two, I prefer [name]Janet[/name] as I think it would be cute on a little girl.

I love [name]Valerie[/name] and [name]Janet[/name]! But I have been accused of liking “dated” names also–for example, I love [name]Ellen[/name]. Not [name]Eleanor[/name] or [name]Elena[/name], just [name]Ellen[/name].

I don’t like the way [name]Margaret[/name] sounds. Too harsh to my ear with the “r” and “g” sounds.

They are OK names, but so many beautiful girls names out there- vintage or modern.

I think [name]Valerie[/name] has a really nice sound to it, actually, though you’re right - my first thought is that it’s dated.

[name]Margaret[/name] is quite classic-sounding to me. [name]Janet[/name] I’m still not sold on…

I like the sound of [name]Janet[/name] if I don’t think of the many middle aged women I have known with the name…but I had [name]Janelle[/name] on my list when I was pregnant. [name]Valerie[/name] makes me think of [name]Valerian[/name] root (my friend used to give it to her dog to calm her during car rides!) and [name]Margaret[/name] is a classic that I never really liked- I’ve known a lot of Maggies. I think [name]Marjorie[/name] has something cuter, spunkier and fresher to it.
I am kind of getting into these ‘mom names’ as people have called them and I especially like:
[name]Linda[/name], [name]Bernadette[/name], [name]Annette[/name], [name]Jeanne[/name], [name]Theresa[/name], [name]Karen[/name], [name]Jolene[/name], [name]Nancy[/name], [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Susan[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name].
For the most part they all have that familiar/sort of classic/sort of dated…but maybe starting to sound fresh again quality. And they are such stronger and more solid names that all of the flowery/princessy ones that are super popular right now.

Oh yeah- I forgot one of my faves- [name]Joan[/name]!

[name]Margaret[/name] is the best to me, but only for the nickname [name]Maggie[/name]. [name]Valerie[/name] is ok, not my favorite. [name]Janet[/name] is pretty but does sound dated to me, like [name]Shirley[/name] or [name]Patricia[/name].

Of the 3, [name]Margaret[/name] stands out as a classic. I don’t think it will ever feel dated and there are so many nn possibilities.

[name]Valerie[/name], yes it feels a little dusty and my first thought is of the [name]Amy[/name] Winehouse song, but it is pretty! I can see it coming back in the future.

[name]Janet[/name] not as much, even though I like [name]Jane[/name].

I think [name]Valerie[/name] is pretty and I love the nn [name]Val[/name]!

I like [name]Margaret[/name] for it’s nickname possibilities, of which there are a ton.

[name]Valerie[/name]'s good, too.

[name]Janet[/name]. No.

[name]Margaret[/name]:I can see why you think this is quite pretty but personally I am not a fan, I love [name]Margot[/name]/Margeaux though!

[name]Valerie[/name]: I really like [name]Valerie[/name]! It is a pretty name, I love [name]Vivienne[/name] too!

[name]Janet[/name]: I am not a fan of this name at all, it’s not really that it sounds dated, but mostly because I find it very boring and stark as a name.

[name]Margaret[/name] - I think it is a lovely name, and I adore the nn [name]Maggie[/name]! I also love [name]Maharet[/name] (pronounced ma-ha-rhett) which is similiar but less well known.
[name]Valerie[/name] - I love this name and I think it is definitely more modern feeling than [name]Margaret[/name] or [name]Janet[/name].
[name]Janet[/name] - I’m not a fan of this at all - honestly just reminds me of the [name]Rocky[/name] Horror Picture Show.

I love [name]Margaret[/name]. I don’t find it dated at all. [name]Janet[/name] maybe a little dated - it’s not quite into the “cool old lady names” category yet. [name]Valerie[/name] doesn’t seem dated to me, it seems very usable - it’s just not my style.
