Have you bought any baby name books?

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I am not having a kid anytime in the near future I do find myself wandering to the baby name book section at [name_m]Barnes[/name_m] and [name_m]Noble[/name_m]. I have acquired quite a collection and I always feel a bit awkward being there.

I’ve never bought one, but I have a baby name book at home. Not sure where it came from, because both my parents say they don’t remember buying it. There are some fascinating names in it.

I tend to wander to the section of books about children in general. I love children and volunteer in orphanages often, so I find such books interesting and helpful… but it does feel awkward and sometimes I get weird looks (people probably assume I’m a teen mom).

No, I’ve never bought one. I used to read them at the library when I was younger, though. I don’t think they’re worth owning/spending money on when there’s a whole internet full on names I can look at for free, you know?

I’m 24 and I own 4 of them. I bought my first at 10 or 12, before the internet came to my house and obviously I’ve bought more since then, and I get weird/horrified looks every time (probably because I look much younger than my real age).

I have P&L’s book “Beyond [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and [name_m]Jason[/name_m], [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Montana[/name_u]”, some book called “20,001+ [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names”, “The Very Best [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Naming Book [name_u]Ever[/name_u]” or something like that, and the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m]. I get most of them on sale if I see them, the only one I paid full price for was the [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] because so many people raved about it, and I do like it a lot.

I get them from the library. I had [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] checked out for like a year, just re-checking it in and out over and over again because no one else had requested it. I love that book. I really should buy it now that it’s on its third edition. I don’t usually buy a book until I’ve “tried it out” first, and I hate paying retail. Almost all my books come from used bookstores.

I also bought one at a dollar-bookstore that is just one of your run-of-the-mill name/meaning books, but I don’t know if I have ever even picked it up. That’s what the internet is for, right?

I have one that I bought a few years ago for funsies, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy another one because, well, internet.

I have K. M. Sheard’s Complete Book of Names, but I’ve yet to come across another that offered information that isn’t online.

I bought an encyclopedia of gods & goddesses one time looking for inspiration that way, and I also bought a book listing strictly literary names. I have owned several other baby name books, the thickest ones being The Great Book of [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names & Dictionary of [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names. There’s no need for them really with the internet out there but isn’t it lovely to snuggle up in bed with a cup of tea & leaf through?

I’m older than a lot of Berries so when I was young, there was no Internet (imagine :)). Books were really the only way I could indulge in my love of names so I’ve acquired quite a library over the years. I stopped counting after 100 baby name books and that was years ago. It’s not weird. I look at it this way: some people collect stamps, I collect names! OK, I hope you feel better now! I do!

I’ve only bought one a few years back called The Ultimate [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names book since it has ~50,000 names and it’s very thick! My sister also has lots and lends me hers from time to time, but I prefer looking at internet sites because I don’t like flipping through 700+ pages of my book. I haven’t bought any new ones because college is sooo expensive.

You shouldn’t feel weird though! Like [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] said, we collect names and there is nothing wrong with that at all. And for what it’s worth I was reading baby name books before I was 10 :stuck_out_tongue:

I have three. The first was The [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Personality Survey book and I bought that when I was like 12. I remember being really embarrassed because I was with my dad and sister but I got it anyways.

The next is some generic baby name book that was on clearance at B&N. I think I was like 17.

The last was the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] and I got that when I was 19 and pregnant.

I haven’t. I feel like the internet is enough of a resource.

I’ve got one it cost two dollars at an op shop (thrift shop). I’ll never buy another one as i prefer the internet

I also have three - The [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] (birthday present), Cool Names for Babies (bought myself), and The Complete Book Of [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names (christmas gift from my sister). I’m planning on adding to the collection - something about owning the book feels nice.

I’ve never actually bought a name book, though I have looked through some!

When my sister was pregnant we bought books, I helped her look through them… and to be honest, name books are over-whelming. It’s just a giant list of names and their meanings, and it’s easy for a few good names to get drowned out in all the bad and mediocre names. I my opinion this site is the best to find good names.

I own one paperback (but it seems I have displaced it!) I think the title was 10,000 baby names, although after looking through it a couple times it annoys me that a lot of the meanings are wrong. The only other names books I’ve bought are e-books, I’ve bought the recent nameberry ones, a celtic guide and waltzingmorethanmatilda’s (name blog) one.

At one time I had 3 of them but I gave one to a friend and one to my sister.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] one and I bought it a few years ago. It is the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Bible and I still really like flipping through it from time to time!

Also like @sunshine kid, I have Waltzing More Than [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s ebook I got mine sent to me for being top commenter (yay me)
