Have you ever been called by an unrelated namr?

I’m constantly being called by names that are completely unrelated to my own. I’ve been called [name_f]Alisson[/name_f] and [name_f]Alisa[/name_f] by teachers and doctors, [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] by a janitor, [name_u]Abby[/name_u] by a gym coach, and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_u]Alex[/name_u] by a lunch lady. Let’s swap stories. What were you called, what did you think, how did you react to the person?

I get called [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] or [name_u]Allison[/name_u] at work quite a lot. There is also an [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] and an [name_u]Allison[/name_u], so I suppose it makes sense. But we’re not really alike at all. Also [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but there’s no [name_f]Amy[/name_f] there now, so that doesn’t make as much sense. They just see me and think “A” name, I think. I just stare at them awkwardly and go, “Uhhh, do you mean [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]?!” lol. And then they apologize, of course. I’m not hugely fond of my name to begin with, so I don’t really mind so much. I have an [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] nametag at work, anyway, so I can sort of see how they’d get confused.

My old boss used to call me Ashlina (not sure how you’d spell it? [name_m]Said[/name_m] ash-uh-lee-nah), which I actually rather liked, too. But that was on purpose. She did that for a lot of girls. There was a [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] that she called [name_f]Madelina[/name_f], too.

I almost always get called variations, similar-sounding, or mispronunciations of my name. I can’t actually say that I get called unrelated names that much. I get called [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] sometimes, but that’s my sister’s name, so it kind of makes sense. [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_f]Alicia[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Elissa[/name_f], [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], and so on…my name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], so again, these aren’t that far off. I’m trying to think of an actual unrelated name…oh, I’ve gotten called [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] before.

I really don’t even blink anymore when someone calls me by something other than my name. I correct them maybe twice, but after that, just let it go. There’s a lady I work with who, whenever she sees me, goes “hey [name_u]Lisa[/name_u]!!”. I just smile and say ‘hey’ back. It may bug some people, but I find it hilarious (as long as my name gets spelled right on official documents). I actually have a collection of receipts and papers that have my name misspelled.

[name_f]Amber[/name_f]. My name is [name_f]Heather[/name_f], but any time that someone has gotten my name wrong it has always been by calling me [name_f]Amber[/name_f] instead, which I found really annoying because I hate that name.

We have the same name! The only difference is I spell it [name_f]Alissa[/name_f]. People misspell it like yours all the time.

My name is [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and I get [name_f]Emily[/name_f] a lot, or people I hardly know calling me, ‘[name_f]Em[/name_f]’ which has never been my nickname.
My sister is [name_f]Laura[/name_f] and she gets [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] a lot. They are all popular names when we were born. People get our names mixed up a lot. I get called [name_f]Laura[/name_f]/[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and she gets [name_f]Emma[/name_f]/[name_f]Emily[/name_f].
However, my kindergarten teacher who was friends with my mum always referred to my sister as [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. I guess it just a name that fit with my parents’ naming style.

The wrong name I usually get most often is [name_f]Megan[/name_f], which is understandable since my nickname is [name_f]Meg[/name_f], but it’s actually short for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], not [name_f]Megan[/name_f]. (I’ve thus learned not to introduce myself as [name_f]Meg[/name_f] to avoid that annoyance.) Other than that, I had a trio of teachers who each called me by a different wrong name. One called me [name_f]Mary[/name_f], one called me [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and one strangely called me [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], which I still don’t get at all. [name_f]Mary[/name_f], I totally get, since [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] starts with the same three letters. [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] also made some sense, being an M name and also kinda vaguely sounding like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]+maiden name smooshed together. But [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]… I have no clue at all where that came from.

There’s a girl at my school who has some mental challenges, and she seems to have me confused with somebody else. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time she sees me in the hall, she says “Hey, [name_f]Carly[/name_f]!” (My name is [name_f]Grace[/name_f]), and I just say “Hey!” back. It’s gone on for so long that I really don’t have the heart to correct her.
Other than that, my grandmother sometimes has to go through the list of names before she finds mine. ("[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]-I mean, [name_u]Steph[/name_u]- no Sar-[name_f]Grace[/name_f]!") It’s sort of weird that she has done it less as she’s gotten older. My mom does it more, of course.

Not unrelated names, no. I’m constantly called [name_u]Blaze[/name_u] though, to the point that 99% of the time I totally don’t notice. Pretty often someone will hear me say my own name and be like, “OMG I’ve been saying your name wrong for YEARS!!” and I’m just like, “Oh, really?”

I get [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] or [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] a lot…it’s actually [name_f]Laura[/name_f]

I get [name_f]Laura[/name_f] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] ALL the time…my name is [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] haha ^

I also get people asking me what [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] is short for…that happens a lot.

Well, my name is [name_f]Rea[/name_f] [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] and I usually go by [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] but most people called me [name_f]Rea[/name_f], which is much easy.
People have called me by unrelated nicknames though, such as [name_f]Leni[/name_f]/[name_f]Lena[/name_f] (both diminutives of [name_f]Elena[/name_f] in Germany). I will not forget a school teacher who called me [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]

I’m one of three sisters so I am constantly called my sisters names and not my own. My grandparents and my own parents are usually the only ones who have to go through my two other sisters before getting to me. That’s about it really. My name is [name_f]Eryn[/name_f] and there’s not much you can mix it up with.

My sister’s friend, who we have known for about 10 years now, still to this day calls me [name_f]Kayla[/name_f]. I think he does it because he knows I hate it, but he is so consistent, he writes it on gifts/cards, and has never called me by my correct name even after months of me correcting him. I’ve given up.

I used to have no trouble with my name until I was 16, then people started having babies named [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f], and now that is the name I am most called by strangers. [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Kayla[/name_f]. Sometimes I have people who try to write my name like two separate words - [name_u]Kay[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] - but this is rare, as it it pronounced with no pause or hesitation between syllables.

My name is Jordan, and that’s what I’ve heard:
Georgia
Joan
These two come with: “What? Georgia (Joan)?” when I meet a person for the first time.
Lynn
It’s actually my sister’s name, and my mother sometimes call me wrong absently on the phone.
Catherine
My best friend’s name, school teachers would often mistake me for her because we were really close and did everything together.
Jane
My band mate had hard time remembering my name, actually.
And that’s interesting that I’m pretty good at remembering names. I know by names all my sister’s friends and classmates, my brother’s colleagues, the sellers in the corner supermarket, my friends’ partners and exes, parents’ friends and so on, that’s why I never ask questions like ‘That girl with bangs… What’s her name?’ or ‘Fred? Who’s that, for God’s sake?’.

I used to have a teacher who called me [name_u]Allison[/name_u]…all the time. For the entire year. Couldnt tell you why, but I didnt mind actually. I like that name. The other [name_u]Allison[/name_u] in the class however got very irritated with it lol

People also used to call me [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] all the time but thats closer to [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].

I get called [name_u]Casey[/name_u] when people read my name and [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] when they hear it. I have also had people assume my name is [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], but it’s just [name_f]Cassie[/name_f].

I just had my daughters friends over the other day and realized they call her [name_u]Angie[/name_u]. Her name is [name_u]Andrea[/name_u], we sometimes call her [name_f]Annie[/name_f], but never [name_u]Angie[/name_u]. She said her friends just started to call her that and she likes it, so she never stopped them

I’m not often called by the wrong name, but yesterday a guy on my bus who I’m semi-friends with called me [name_u]Allison[/name_u]. It makes sense because my friend [name_u]Allison[/name_u] sometimes rides that bus and is also semi-friends with him. We were arguing, though, and he just randomly called me [name_u]Allison[/name_u] and that pissed me off even more.

When I in elementary school, I was in a class with a [name_f]Rochelle[/name_f]. My name’s [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. When our papers were being sorted into folders that we’d take home every Friday, I always ended up with a lot of hers.

My elderly neighbor always called me [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], I always thought it was funny because it has nothing to to with my name which is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].
