I’ve heard of Mhairi! Outside of [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], I think your best bet would be to spell it [name_f]Mairi[/name_f], though.
My sister-in-laws sister-in-law (ha!) is Mhairi. She pronounces it closer to Mah-ree. I like it and I don’t think it’s too complicated for the UK (we all live in [name_f]England[/name_f]) but it might be trickier elsewhere in the world!
I think I know where the confusion arises (I’m Irish, not Scottish but Irish is very close together Scottish).
The Irish equivalent is “Máire” (moy-ra) but if you were to address someone called this name you’d say “a Mháire” which is pronounced Voy-ra.
It’s what’s known as the vocative case.
By th way, the name pronounced “MAH-ree” is very common in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], especially amongst the older ladies but it’s usually spelled [name_f]Marie[/name_f],like the [name_m]French[/name_m] name ma-[name_f]REE[/name_f].
I’d go with [name_f]Mairi[/name_f] if you like the name. The “h” gives it the V sound
Yeah, I’ve seen Mhairi before. The mh is pronounced like a v like in [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f]. I love the way it looks, but don’t really like the way it sounds.
