Have you seen this news story....

I just saw this today and was appalled! I hope this mama is able to appeal and get this silly ruling overturned. At the end of the video the [name_m]Judge[/name_m] is asked about the name [name_m]Jesus[/name_m]…and she said it didn’t pertain to this case…WHAT…um hello?

Anyways wondering what you all thought about it?

After thinking on it, I do think the judge overstepped her bounds with this. The couple was in court over the baby’s last name (which is a stupid reason to go to court imo but still), so the first name shouldn’t even have been a consideration. They’ll probably win the appeal because of freedom of speech, and even though I think [name_u]Messiah[/name_u] isn’t a good name, I agree the mom has the right to name him whatever she wants. And like the mom said, they can’t stop her from calling him [name_u]Messiah[/name_u] even though the name on his birth certificate is (temporarily) [name_m]Martin[/name_m].

I agree, the [name_m]Judge[/name_m] went too far with this. On the other hand who goes to court to settle on the last name? -.-

Exactly what I was thinking.

And who goes to court over a last name? I am all for the right to choose to keep your name or not when you’re married so then I could see some argument over the baby’s last name maybe but having to go to court to settle it? Wouldn’t the court just say that is their choice?

Yeah, I do not agree with the [name_m]Judge[/name_m]'s decision. This story upset me too.

I think the judge went too far. If the parents agree on the first name there was no reason for her to change it. Although I think [name_u]Messiah[/name_u] is a bit of a crazy name to use, that’s their choice to make not the judges. I hope they win the apeal.

As far as going to court over the surname goes, I know someone that had to. His ex left him for someone else when she was 8 months pregnant and he had to fight for his son to have his surname.

That’s wrong. I don’t think that the judge had any right to have her child renamed just because it upset her beliefs. I’m with the mom on this one.

I agree with the judge that the name is inappropriate and could cause problems for the kid in the future. BUT… she overstepped her bounds here. The baby’s first name isn’t her choice–it’s the choice of the parents. They will most likely win on appeal. I mean, 762 kids were given the name last year. It’s not like it’s unheard of.

I know! I agree the name is tacky and in poor taste, but the judge does not have the right to change the name. I am a devout [name_m]Christian[/name_m], but I am not offended by this. It just makes me roll my eyes.
