First off hello! I just love this site and have been scoiuring it long before my pregnancy…We are having our first boy & think we have his name.
Estan Sharpe (LN is 2 syllables)…
My concern is the pronunciation of Estan. We say it with a soft A like [name]Esten[/name] would read. Or the possible spanish pronunciation of Eh Stahn…I feel neurotic but I beg all you name geniuses for advice/opinions of any sort. Any variations are welcome too, as we are not set on the MN but need an S.

So its prn eh-sten? I would be more worried about people prounouncing it like [name]Easton[/name]. Have you considered [name]Easton[/name]? [name]Easton[/name] Sharpe would be very handsome and sounds more masculine that Estan imo.

I do like [name]Easton[/name]. I love [name]Emmett[/name] but husband does not. Great names.
[name]Easton[/name] I think looks best and wouldn’t have the pn issues
[name]Emmett[/name] is a GREAT name, but unlike your hubby, I wouldn’t pick it do to the Twilight effect. 
Estan is very nice. It sort of reminds me of [name]Esteban[/name].

I assumed at first sight that it would be pronounced EH-sten. (I think that’s how you wanted it?) I like it! It’s lovely and unusual!
I wouldn’t get too worried about pronunciation-- people will get the hang of it after awhile!

P.S. If you are really worried, spelling it [name]Esten[/name] would make the pronunciation even clearer.
I assumed it was Eh-sten as well, some people might mispronounce it as [name]Easton[/name], but I think after a few corrections people will get it right. It reminds me of the name [name]Stephen[/name] (pr. stehff-en) probably the soft eh sound…
Whats the story behind Estan? Estan to me is a spanish word kind of like naming your kid “where” or “THAT”.
In addition to the (rather large) problems with the meaning in Spanish, I feel as though he would spend his life having this conversation, “[name]Hi[/name], I’m Estan.” “[name]Ethan[/name]?” “No, Estan. E-s-t-a-n.”
Thank you everyone! Estan is a name my artist husband "came up’ with. I immediatly typed it in Nameberry’s search and told him NO when I saw this was not even a name. However within hours it grew on me and I haven’t been able to shake it since. I am aware of the Spanish definition but not as hung up on that as pronunciation. I have to agree with the the comments suggesting [name]Easton[/name] or [name]Esteban[/name] over Estan. I also looked at it thinking it was [name]Ethan[/name] first, and then wondered how it was supposed to be pronounced.
I think a previous poster mentioned that Estan in Spanish would sound like you’re saying ‘Where’, but actually, it would be like saying ‘Are’ (‘d”nde’ means ‘where’).
Est”n is the third person plural form of the verb estar which is one of the 2 verbs meaning ‘to be’, but is typically used in describing temporary, or changing situations like location, weather, emotions, etc. (because things move around, weather changes, and you’re never always in the same mood…).
Anyway, my point is that as a Spanish speaker, reading the name Estan Sharpe, would come off to me as meaning ‘they are Sharpe’, which is just weird.
I would probably assume that it was some sort of strange pun that they were trying to say the kid was sharp (as in clever or maybe pointy), but even that would be weird because they used estar instead of ser (the other ‘to be’ verb), so it’s be temporary cleverness or whatever… confusion all around.
Anyway, just wanted to clear things up from the Spanish pronunciation and translation side.
But if you love Estan, I would suggest possibly spelling it [name]Esten[/name] to clear up any pronunciation or translation confusion. : )

When I see Estan, I pronounce it EE-stan. I don’t love it, but I don’t have to love it: it’s not my child. So if you love it, then go for it. But do take a few looks at the other berries’ suggestions. Of those, I liked [name]Weston[/name], [name]Easton[/name], and [name]Sebastian[/name] the best.
