Okay so my DH and I have been worried that we were going to have a boy because we have been longing for a little girl.
Luckly last week we found out that we are indeed having the girl of our dreams. The problem is because we were thinking we would get stuck with a boy we’ve only been looking at boy names, we had even settled on a boy name as well. Now though it seems like we are stuck with the only girl name that we had even talked about which is [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]. Its not that I don’t like the name, it just seem off some how. What do you think any suggestions on what to do. Any little bit helps. Thanks in advance.
[name_f]Callie[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Summer[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Layla[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Posy[/name_f] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] has a nice ring, but [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] is very popular and trendy, while [name_u]Fable[/name_u] is one of those out-there word names. I much, much prefer the [name_f]Kaylie[/name_f] spelling, and while, yes, it has become extremely popular, I can see its appeal.
[name_u]Fable[/name_u] is interesting sounding, but neither of its meanings are really suitable or sensible for a person. Fables are commonly known as fictitious tales with obvious morals, typically with animals. Not that there’s anything wrong with that - but it’s a little random. Like naming your kid Noun, Verb, Eulogy or [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]. Other than helping them out on a 7th grade English class, it’s doubtful the definition of a primitive fairytale will really have meaning to your child. The other meaning of fable is essentially “a lie” - Merriam-[name_m]Webster[/name_m] defines it as “a false statement.” Also not great.
Other alternatives to [name_f]Kaylie[/name_f]: [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
Alternatives to [name_u]Fable[/name_u]: this is tricky. I usually advise people to choose middle names with personal significance to them; perhaps a family name, or one honoring a lost friend or family member. Stylistically, I could list hundreds of lovely word names, but I don’t think that’ll be very helpful to you; that kind of research you could do on your own. The one major think I’d suggest would be [name_u]Story[/name_u]. If you choose a different name, other than [name_f]Kaylie[/name_f], that doesn’t rhyme ([name_u]Piper[/name_u], say) [name_u]Story[/name_u] has the creative, literary connection that isn’t as specific as [name_u]Fable[/name_u], and without the negative second meaning [name_u]Fable[/name_u] has.
Be very careful about saying you’re glad you’re not ‘stuck with a boy’. Not many people know this but many ultrasounds are wrong and people end up with boys after being told they’re having girls. [name_m]Just[/name_m] saying…
bibliophile-
I think the problem that I’m having with the name is more with [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] then [name_u]Fable[/name_u]. [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] is just so popular right now and I had been hoping to have a name that was a little more unique (outside the top 50 or 100). I grew up with at least two other girls with the same name as me and it always bothered me so I was hoping to avoid that with my own kids.
[name_u]Fable[/name_u] is one that came up here on NB in a blog post a while back that I suggested and we both liked. My husband is an author and wanted a way to make her name a tribute to that with out being a name directly associated with his books. I don’t have any problem with that and I think its rather sweet of my DH. We both love literary names and I have considered many classical character names like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (in wonderland) or author names like [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], or [name_f]Anne[/name_f] for the [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] sisters. But again some of these are names that are up there in popularity as well.
@erinm that happened to my friend’s family, the ultrasound said girl but then my friend ended up with a little brother instead
I think [name_u]Fable[/name_u] is a really cool middle name. If you’re looking for literary name what about [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], Juliet, [name_f]Helena[/name_f], etc… there are lots of great girls names in [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s works
Instead of [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], have you considered [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f]/[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]. It’s a lot less trendy and has a similar feel.
Also, since popularity is an issue, have you considered alternatives to the names you already like? Instead of [name_f]Emily[/name_f], you could use [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. Instead of [name_f]Anne[/name_f], how about [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]?
There are also other literary names that aren’t very popular.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_u]Regan[/name_u]
I think the whole [name_u]Kay[/name_u]- lee, lyn, la so on trend is played to death, and sounds strange with such a creative middle name. I would go with either an uber-traditional name or a similarly creative name.
Maybe [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] or [name_f]Kaya[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u].
Some others that might strike you (or not!):
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u], and I’ve had a soft spot for [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] since Kaywinnet [name_u]Lee[/name_u] “[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f]” Frye from Firefly.
I would suggest [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f].
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] would be gorgeous!
I also like the above suggestion of [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]!
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] is really trendy and popular and … also a little dated to me. I met one of the first Kayleys when I was a little girl (I’m 25 now). She was I think 4 years younger so about 21 now. Also since there are a large amount of spellings for [name_f]Kayley[/name_f] [name_f]Kailey[/name_f], [name_f]Cayley[/name_f], [name_f]Caeley[/name_f], etc. It’s hard to say how popular this name really is.
Here are some more choices:
[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]
[name_f]Katia[/name_f]/[name_f]Katya[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaelyn[/name_f] (I knew someone with this name: I am not sure of how they spelled it.)
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Carly[/name_f]
and [name_f]Katy[/name_f] either as nickname or on it’s own
Also
[name_f]Jill[/name_f] ([name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Jill[/name_f]; The [name_u]Silver[/name_u] Chair)
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m], etc.)
[name_f]Susan[/name_f] (The [name_m]Lion[/name_m], The Witch, and The Wardrobe)
[name_f]Roberta[/name_f] (The Railway Children)
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] (I Capture the Castle)
etc.
I suggest you could keep looking through childhood favorites to find one to use.
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] is kind of cool and edgy while still being sweet and literary. And its outside the top 100, too. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] sits at #127.
Have you considered reversing it? [name_u]Fable[/name_u] or [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] or [name_u]Story[/name_u] for a first and [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] in the middle?
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] is one of those names I don’t get anyone ever liking. It is trendy, cutesy, doesn’t age well, and is now very dated. Sorry, I know that is harsh. I really like [name_u]Fable[/name_u] as a middle name! It is different and would make a classic name feel really unique. If you like K or C names, I suggest those that other posters listed:
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
More Cutesy:
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Milly[/name_f]
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_u]Josie[/name_u]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmie[/name_f]
I love silverr’s suggestion of [name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u]!!
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] would be lovely ([name_f]Calista[/name_f] means ‘most beautiful’, and [name_f]Callisto[/name_f] is a moon of [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]–and you could use the nn [name_u]Cali[/name_u]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f]).
I agree [name_f]Calista[/name_f] is a beautiful name although I think I would like a different middle, maybe [name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f], and I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u].
rollo
Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. So far of the names recommended [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are both names my DH and I have both talked about. I’m a fan of both but if I was going to use either I would have to convince him. I would also want to use the spelling [name_f]Alyss[/name_f] or [name_f]Alys[/name_f] rather then [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. I know that there are a lot downsides to using a unique spelling, which is why its not our first choice.
Also just so you know why I prefer the different spelling of [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. As I read the name it looks to me like A-lice or [name_m]Al[/name_m]-ice neither of which seem very pretty to me. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is also a character from my husband’s book and he doesn’t want people to think he’s naming her after the character.
Normally I hate alternate spellings like this, but I actually like [name_f]Alyss[/name_f]. There’s an awesome retelling of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_u]Carroll[/name_u]'s Wonderland called The Looking Glass Wars, and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is called [name_f]Alyss[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m].
I’d recommend to you:
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]: A romantic name from Pride and Prejudice, but much less popular.
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]: Also a P&P name.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]: Same soft, romantic, vintage name as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_f]Jane[/name_f]/[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but not making any top 50 lists. [name_f]One[/name_f] of the heroines of [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, which is amazing if you haven’t read it. Think [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] from Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing or [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] from P&P.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]: Spunky heroine of Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing, sounds similar to [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]: an unconventional homage to the sisters.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Jo[/name_u]: [name_m]French[/name_m] and elegant meets tomboyish in [name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u]'s first name.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]: [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u] would be gorgeous.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]: Vintage and classy, landmark author [name_m]Beecher[/name_m] [name_m]Stowe[/name_m] had this name.
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]: the beautiful ward of Miss Havisham that wins [name_m]Pip[/name_m]'s love in Dickens superb Great Expectations.
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]: the lovely, beautiful girl rescued by Valjean who represents hope and love triumphing darkness in [name_u]Les[/name_u] Miserables.
